Boo for unearned runs

I think these announcers are making sense regarding the Cards defense.

"Errors committed" isn't the best way to judge defense.

Better is how many balls in play are turned into outs. But yeah, the defense isn’t looking good by that standard either.

Soriano = #5 hitter

Speed be darned. The man has a .330 career OBP. Career high was .351 on a Washington team with no help on offense. He’s a lock for 120 strikeouts.

In what St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called a "big day" for his club, starter Chris Carpenter took the mound for his first session of live batting practice and promptly buzzed the fuzz on catcher Jason LaRue’s chin with an errant fastball.

"Sorry," Carpenter called from the mound.

"Don’t say you’re sorry," LaRue barked back.

"He said it," pitching coach Dave Duncan said from the side of the cage, "but he didn’t mean it."

Soriano can't solve our young pitchers

Hat trick against P.J. too, right?

Anyway, these FOX announcers are really ripping the Cardinal defense, and saying we just can’t continue to hit like this over the course of the season. While I don’t really like all the errors, this guy is just way off. This is a good defensive team. We’ve got Gold Glove calibur players at catcher, first and short and our only real weaknesses on the field are 2B and LF and only when Skip and Dunc are out there(and Skip is learning).

Should anyone be surprised we’re 12-5? I don’t think so. Is it unsustainable? Could be, but that will rest on the pitching staff, not as much the position players, we mostly know what to expect from them. Yeah, we’ve had some turnover and need to execute, but if teams like can’t take advantage of our early season weaknesses right now, that’s going to be a big problem for them later in the season.

In what St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called a "big day" for his club, starter Chris Carpenter took the mound for his first session of live batting practice and promptly buzzed the fuzz on catcher Jason LaRue’s chin with an errant fastball.

But they have always been a good fundamental team. Forever. But this year they just can’t keep this up."

Riiiight.

No mention either way of growing a mustache coloring your hair because you feel like it.

Right.

According to ads, to be a woman worthy of love (or a job, or to be a good mom, etc) you have to spend hours a day on your looks, you have to do fifteen things at once and do them well, you have to keep your home sterile and beautiful, etc. Almost all ads are insulting to women the way that ad was insulting to men.

In what St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called a "big day" for his club, starter Chris Carpenter took the mound for his first session of live batting practice and promptly buzzed the fuzz on catcher Jason LaRue’s chin with an errant fastball.

"Sorry," Carpenter called from the mound.

congrats to boggs

barden’s horror aside, he threw a great game today and mostly kept our pen out of it. I’m sure we’ll all remember the slam today, but Boggs’ start was, for me, the biggest + out of this game by a mile. Even if he’s not that sharp again, he looks like a major league starter so far. i didn’t read both threads today, but i did see some karros bashing in this one. what was he doing to upset you all? and why, after spending such a short time in the windy city would he have any bias towards them? i’ve always heard him say he bleeds Dodger blue, not that other blue that makes babies cry.

is like saying Albert is “sorta” good.

with well over 700 coments, i didn't even come close to reading the whole thing

i just skimmed over them after i heard about Pujols big day. i only came on here a couple hours ago since ohio had the yanks vs sawx game. so i took the day off from baseball & got some sun.

He spent the entire afternoon blasting the Cardinals and how they would fall apart

while parading the Cubs as the model NL team. It was gratuitous and protracted. Needless to say we didn’t take kindly to it.

really? he was that bad uh?

i’m kind of surprised considering his past with the Dodgers. did Thommy boy being the good red leg supporter fall right in line with his “logic”?

his UGH on the highlight posted is pretty bad. dude should be told stuff like that doesn’t fly on a national broadcast. of course considering only two cities got the game, i guess it wasn’t really a national broadcast.

First off, I am not a fan of Karro's

but the more I listen to that call, the more I hear “ahh”, it seemed to me like he was in awe of that swing. Of course the rest of the game he absolutely stunk up the broadcast, but I am willing to give him a pass on the grand slam call.

That's wierd

Al in his post-game story at BCB seemed to think that Karros was ripping on the Cubs.

Some quotes from the postgame:

Pujols on his slam: "I hit that ball really good, I’m not going to lie to you," Pujols said. "That’s all I got. I hit that ball as good as you can hit a ball. I’m just blessed that I put a good swing on it."

From a rather peeved Piniella: "You can’t walk people in front of Pujols. You might be able to do that in Modesto, but over here, I would suggest not. He hit that ball, I’ll tell you."

From Patton, who might be heading down the Cubs’ class-A team, if not all the way back to Modesto, on his approach to Pujols: "I was up there throwing strikes. That was my mindset. That’s what I wanted to do. I guess you saw what happened."

TLR rhapsodizing about Pujols again: "What a player. It’s a pleasure to watch him play. Actually, it’s a pleasure to watch him practice. It’s a pleasure to watch him in the clubhouse. It’s a pleasure to watch him in the community. He’s an amazing man."

Let me just say for the zillionth time that I sure am glad Pujols is on my team, so I get to watch him and listen to him up close every day.

20 years from now

we will all look back on Pujols career and realize how lucky we were to experience it every single day

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

pujols also said he

was humbled to haqve 1000 career rbis, and loves to do be able to do what he does…

i think thats the thing i like about him most he enjoys it…like last night when he stole second..you could tell the guy enjoys baseball..

that I never saw Musial play. I feel nothing but gratitude and awe for being alive to see Albert Pujols do what he does.

today was the first time since 2006 that we won 2 games in a row against the cubs!?!?!

That can't be right

Maybe it’s the first time since 2006 we’ve won two in a row vs. the Cubs in the same series? I refuse to believe we didn’t win the last game of one Cubs series, and then a few weeks later win the first of the next Cubs series. I’m also not looking anything up to back up my hypothesis. Just don’t tell my grad school adviser.

but when I replayed it a bit ago on stlcardinals.com you can’t see the ball, but you can see the fans scrambling for the ball in the seats.

I love everything about that at bat

You could just sense as soon as Patton let go of that ball that Albert knew what he was going to do with it. Albert’s swing was as close to a golfer’s swing off a tee as anyone is ever going to see in this game. Then you have Soto’s disbelief and Patton’s utter dejection. You also have the mass hysteria in the concourse after the ball lands, and the guy going crazy jumping up and down behind the gate…yeah, that was one helluva at bat.
