| Dempster | Wainwright |
| 1-0, 5.00 | 2-0, 3.31 |
With apologies to the red baron, Ogden Nash, and the city of Nantucket:
There once was a pitcher named Wainwright,
Who pitched all his pitches from Wainheights.
He used to be great,
Now he can't find the plate,
On the zone he could stand to shed Wainlight

Isn’t it the popular opinion that busch is more pitcher friendly than hitter friendly? In Chi town most of the media say its a hitters park and that the ball flies out there. I know ESPN.com says it has a below 1 park factor in its first three years.

i'm just wondering
Is it legal to do that from the windup and then not do it from the stretch or does he have to do it from the wind up AND the stretch to be legal?
by Walking Underwear on Apr 24, 2009 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah, dempster
of course, i missed the first inning. but that’s how he pitched last year. flip form the windup, none from the stretch
so does that make it illegal
or does he get to do it from the windup and not the stretch?
by Walking Underwear on Apr 24, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions
I dont think it is illegal if he always does it from the windup
Pitchers dont have to have the same motion from the stretch as they do from the windup. As long as he does it every time out of the windup and never out of the stretch it is legal.
"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. i was led to believe the rule he's breaking had more to do with distracting the batter
like having jewelry or stuff like that on his arm.
and i also thought if it involves the hands it had to be the same from the stretch as from the windup.
It kind of sounds like he’s [Duncan] just running around like a puppy out there – full speed ahead in random directions. – BTown Birds Fan
BEN MOTHERHUSHYOURMOUTH SHEETS
That is possible
but maybe it is like the 3rd to 1st move, and the inside move to second, because those are inconsistant with the rule book as well.

It seems like most right handed pitchers turn their glove hand once towards home plate. Dempster essentially deeks that move like two or three times during his delivery. That alone seems sketchy.

Really
I think the PITCHf/x attempts at classifying 4-seams vs. 2-seams (sinkers) is totally pointless. The most extreme can obviously be defined but there’s so much overlap between them it’s impossible. Every pitcher throws a 2-seam and a 4-seam. They’re the same pitch—-a fastball—-it’s just a different wrinkles.

by from First to Third on Apr 24, 2009 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I disagree entirely
Much of his value comes from being able to be a defensive replacement in the OF, especially with Duncan out there. He should have made the play, everyone knows it. Errors happen, its not his position switch that caused it.
Agreed. Blaming TLR for that play makes no sense.
One Century down, next on its way. Cardinals '09 : Preserving the Cubs tradition.
by AdjustedExpectations on Apr 24, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Disagree, then agree.
Start with the agree: Tony moving Skip to left did not cause that error. Skip needs to put two effing hands on that ball, and he didn’t. Period. Bad fielding on Skip.
Now the disagree: Skip’s value to this team has nothing to do with his ability to play as a defensive OF. He’s better than Duncan, a little worse than Ank, and much worse than Rasmus. Skip’s only value to this team is the fact that his bat is better than that of the average second baseman. You put him in the outfield, and he immediately becomes a below-average player, and our worst overall option out there.
If you've got a blacklist, I want to be on it.
by the red baron on Apr 25, 2009 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions
agree, then disagree, then, uh.
last year, skip was about half a win better than an average player, in the outfield. He’s nowhere near the player that rasmus is, and in a vacuum should never play the outfield over colby, but he is not a liability there…
- "I went at it and didn’t slow down, so it kind of bounced off me." -Lil' Dunc
I assume you're
referring to the fact that I referred to him as ‘below average’? What I mean is that as an outfielder, he’s a slightly below-average player overall. His defense is a bit above average, and his offense is below average, thus he’s slightly below average.
If you've got a blacklist, I want to be on it.
by the red baron on Apr 25, 2009 12:40 AM EDT up reply actions
no, he was about half a win better
than the average player, with offense and defense both considered, while playing totally in the OF, last year.
- "I went at it and didn’t slow down, so it kind of bounced off me." -Lil' Dunc
Oh, I see.
Fair enough. Personally, I feel his talent level is a little below than what he did last year, but based on the production, I can’t really argue with you.
Can we agree he’s more valuable at second than in the outfield at least?
If you've got a blacklist, I want to be on it.
by the red baron on Apr 25, 2009 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions
at worst, it's an interesting experiment
he’s much, much better for this team, at second base, than he would be in LF. He has no place in LF on this team, really.
OTOH, I have absolutely no problem with subbing him out for brendan ryan in the 6th inning in close games. Joe Thurston, not so much.
- "I went at it and didn’t slow down, so it kind of bounced off me." -Lil' Dunc
Agreed.
Personally, as interesting as the experiment is, I can’t help but think to myself, on a fairly regular basis, that the team would be much better off with just Thurston and Barden platooning at second, with Skip playing center for somebody else. Oh, well.
If you've got a blacklist, I want to be on it.

Ok I have a question
Why is the run that scored on Skip’s drop an unearned run, but the run on the DP which should have ended the inning is earned according to gameday?
Al just said they were both unearned though so maybe gameday will change it.

Last year when TLR was calling Shu a GoldGlove OF
i thought it was a joke. He made a lot of lame plays, alot of which didnt actually go as errors.
His OF defense is really not that great.
Milt Thompson FTW!
TLR is so baffling
Why use Skip as a LF Defensive replacement? The guy has not played the position regularly since last year. It makes no effing sense. Ugh.
MyBrute - Where tiny gladiators rule the internets
yup
i hate tony’s musical chairs approach. Skip at 2b is workign fine. just leave him there. he’s used to it now. he’s settling in there. and most importantly there’s a perfectly capable D replacement for the OF on the bench!!
/sigh
hell.
How many times out of 100 does Skip misplay that? 2, 3?

It'd be nice for Boggs to go 6 and give up 3
that seems realistic enough even against the Cubs.
I like Boggs, he’s the prototypical back-end starter this org loves to produce.
a decent change up and he’ll be something special. slurve is fairly solid against righties, changeup for lefites, and one of the best whipping fastballs I’ve seen. Without a change and it’s going to be a long day with him trying to survive on the fastball alone.

yeah, definately haven't given up on Boggs yet
or PJ.
Really need at least one of these guys to pan out this year so we can get some cheap arms next year. Mortenson in AAA might be a fixture in 2010 as well, that’s getting a little too far ahead though.
MAN that's a nice win to have
I’m not enamored of Franklin yet, but I’m feeling more comfortable with the offense as time goes on.
Yeah, would be nice to have Glaus, but the MIFers have filled in nicely.
He’d be hitting about .150 right now, but somehow have like 20 RBIs.
Can we please not give away the next 2 games to the Cubs
like last week? It’d be nice to have them 5 games out of first by Monday morning.
by Hardcore Legend on Apr 24, 2009 11:22 PM EDT reply actions
I'd be happy to split the next two and take the series...
But I’d obviously be ecstatic to somehow sweep. I think a five game lead would be pretty significant, even this early…
And I know...
the Reds and Pirates wouldn’t be five back, but let’s get real, it’s the Reds and Pirates. No one else in this division really impresses me outside of the Cubs and Cardinals. I think the Brewers and Reds are .500 clubs at best, and the Astros and Pirates suck…
Not really worried about the Reds, Mil so far looks as what they looked like in the offseason, and the Astros will be playing out from the nursing home all year.
But if the Pirates play over their heads and some how keep things close, they worry me. It almost feels as if that team has been completely built for one soul purpose, to beat us.

I know what you mean...
They have been a never-ending source of frustration for us recently. But I just don’t think they can hang in all summer, maybe for a few months like they did a few years ago, but not permanently. That’s totally based on it being the Pirates, though…
Good results from the minors too
Mortenson had another great outing.
6.1 IP 2 Hits ER
5 BB! That’s a little concerning.
Jones wen’t 2-5 hitting a double.
Wallace went 2-4 and Jacked a Dong. Also he walked, although I think it’s usually implied wallace gets walked or HBP at least once per game.
The Wallace HR was a walk-off, too
