Post Game 16 Thread
800 comments on an overflow thread for a day game. . . me thinks several someones didn't get their work done in the office yesterday.
In any event, the Cards sweep the Mets (Yay!) in another outpooring of offense by the score of 12-8.
In potentially bad news, Kyle Lohse felt a pop in his knee, which remained sore after the game. He went for an MRI -- results on Friday. With Carpenter down, the Cardinals may have to go trolling their AAA reserves again or see if one of Paul Byrd/Pedro Martinez/Swamp Gas is available.
Have at with any fretting over Lohse, post game elation or starting pitching trepidation comments.

I called off today...
First day I’ve missed of work in 5 years. I just couldn’t sleep last night and didn’t fall asleep until an hour before work…
Anywho, I hope the best for lohse. We can’t afford to lose both him and Carpenter at the same time.
Only somewhat related
but as excited as I was for PJ, he’s probably not major league ready. So you hope Boggs has a good outing on Saturday. I’m unusually high on him, I think his stuff is good and I think he could put it together working with Dunc
I'm a terrible employee.
One of the perks.

so Carp's gone till 2020
and now Lohse is out till when, 2015? i wonder if they can use the same stuff that’s in Baby Dunks neck to give Carp a new body & Lohse a new leg?

I posted this at the end of the last thread
but will repost since some (HL) may be interested:
at the Cardinals Authentic store, they are selling VHS copies of the 80’s teams highlights for $5. I just got done watching "Heck of a Year" for the first time in probably twenty years, and my god did guys not wear shirts at Busch in the 80’s!
Also, from that store: if anyone else buys that Joe Petini jersey, I will murder you. It will be mine. Oh yes, it will be mine.
hecanthithecanthithecanthithecanthit
I watched the heck out of "heck of a year" as a kid
Loved hearing Jack and you can’t beat the “Heat is On” soundtrack. I also like Gussie getting excited.
Great highlights of Ozzie, Vince etc.
That was really an incredible team
all that speed, Willie’s MVP, Vince’s ROY, Dayley and Worrell locking down the bullpen, Forsch being Forsch, Herr, Ozzie, Van Slyke, Pendelton and Clark, Tudors career year…
I wish I wouldn’t have been 5 years old for it.
hecanthithecanthithecanthithecanthit
I know!
Of course, I’ll take being alive and remembering some of it over being born post-’87. Those teams were not so hot.
Classic underachiever.
The 85 and 87 team
are probably the last teams i wish I would have been my age now during their day. There is no way I’d want to ive through 85 in today’s environment with everyone questioning why the traded Lonnie and let Bruce walk and why they had a losing record though May… and Van Slyke sucks!.. We need a veteran closer, not some kid named Todd!
At the same time, I might enjoy the team more now if I only got two or three articles about them a day in the PD and just watched the games.
I know I’m over-fed with information; sometimes i wonder how’d I’d get by 25 years ago. I’d like to find out.
hecanthithecanthithecanthithecanthit
I was 9 so it was a really great time of my life
Got to watch or listen to all the games. Jack Clark stills seem like a mythic figure to me. And Tudor was great.
It seemed like everytime Vince and Willie were on they were running.
How does Andujar always get left out?
Still my favorite Cardinals pitcher, despite the melt down. He was pretty incredible that year, as he did it all year. Tudor really just did it for half a year.
Are these brand new tapes
or are the copies some employee made in his basement?

What would be the problem with bringing Pedro in?
Our starters already only go 6 innings. Plus at least he would give us some pretty good starts. I mean PJ didn’t exactly look like the future today.

he said he won't sign a contract for under $5 Million
there is no chance the Cardinals pay that.
MyBrute - Where tiny gladiators rule the internets
He doesn't seem to care.
He doesn’t have to pitch. It sounds like he will pitch if the money’s right, or he’ll retire. Pedro’s an odd duck, and I honestly don’t think it matters to him which way this goes.
Since we are talking about this now:
I just saw this on mlbtraderumors.com
from Jayson Stark
“Pedro Martinez continues to demand a $5 million paycheck. It’s doubtful any team, no matter how desperate, would commit to that price.”
I wonder if he could be had for base salary + incentives totaling that much

It's not so much the pop
but it’s the pop followed by tightness and swelling. If it was just a joint creaking or somesuch I don’t think he would have had those other symptoms.

Which "guys"?
P.J. Walters is so much a man, he equals multiple “guys” in this equation.
Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky and I went horseback riding, but there weren't any horses around? Anyway, Brasky throws a saddle on my back and rides me around Wyoming for three days. Well, wouldn't ya know it, my stamina increased with each day, and I develop tremendous leg muscles. So anyway, Brasky decides to enter me into the Breeders Cup under the name Turkish Delight. And Im running in second place, and I'm running, and I break my ankle. So anyway, they're about to shoot me. Then someone from the crowd yells out, God bless him, Dont shoot him, he's a human.

His hitting was never great?
5 straight seasons of 112+ OPS+, 8 out of 9. He wasn’t Babe Ruth, but he was a solid hitter, and very good some seasons.

112 OPS+ isn't great
It is above average, but it isn’t great. Also, OPS would overrate a guy like Jones, because he hits for a high slugging, but doesn’t get on base a ton, and the latter is much more important in terms of scoring runs. His average wOBA in his prime was about .365, which isn’t good, but not great.

His defense became so universally overrated that it was eventually underrated
it was cool to pick on his weight, but he was still a plus defender his later years in ATL.
It won’t surprise me if he is found to be older than he is, ala Tejada. He seems to have aged at a rapid rate.
hecanthithecanthithecanthithecanthit
Eh I don't think so
Every report was that he was just lazy and didn’t work hard. People will probably react virulently to this but it’s probably a lot like Griffey except Jones’ talent level was waaaaay lower to begin with so it manifested itself in sucking and not as much injuries.
Not afraid to nitpick
Great game to witness today. Looks like we’ve used Walter’s arm before we ship him back on the shuttle.
Can’t say I’m too stressed on the Lohse issue just yet. One, he’s durable and secondly I’m having too damn much fun with this team to get worked up.
If he’s tender, let’s have him skip a start and go from there, the only thing I don’t want to see is Lohse playing hero to get back out there with Carp’s issues

I doubt Walters will be sent down
if Lohse has to miss a start.
MyBrute - Where tiny gladiators rule the internets
According to Al and Dan
someone has to be sent down by Saturday because the Cardinals are going to need another reliever.
Of course, if Wainwright throws a CG shutout tomorrow, this will be moot.

How (not) to pitch to Albert Pujols
Nice clinic there, thanks to Livan. That’ll be rerun on SC.
BBTN’s won’t. Pujols in historical perspective (only ONE stat, but I guess it’s a start), the stache is either unique or looks like Giambi, and grading Skip’s move to second with added contact.
Yeah, ESPN. I hate insomnia.

I'm not a doctor, but...
… I’m pretty sure knees aren’t supposed to “pop,” neither is fluid.
Maybe it’s just because he’s a Cards pitcher and I’m a Cards fan, but I have a bad feeling about this.
I’m thinking that Boggs and/or McClellan will get their chances to start pretty soon.
On the other hand, this offense has been great to watch. I’m extra glad to see Ank have a big day yesterday.
I spent a few quiet moments yesterday thinking about dealing an excess outfielder or two and who, if anyone, could be got. Hopefully by dealing an MLB outfielder we can do better than a subperforming, getting sent down, middle reliever.

Mine, too, but it doesn't swell up afterwards.
The swelling would indicate that this isn’t just an arthritec cartilage issue. Hopefully he just stretched something in there, but it’s more likely he tore his meniscus or worse.
or
he banged it on the ground (I haven’t seen the play). If you hit your knee with much force at all it will swell. Pre-patellar bursa swells pretty easy. I used to bang mine on the outfield lip all the time diving for grounders in my glory days. It would swell and I’d have a little discomfort, but not anything that caused me to miss time. Just something that if you are a major league pitcher they have to check out.
