Hitter flies out to Ludwick, Beltran tries to tag up from second to third, thurston loses the ball on the tag and it rolls towards the mound, beltran tries to go home, doesn’t slide and steps on molina’s foot instead of the plate. Double play.

Then… when Ryan Lined one into left the left fielder fell on his butt and it went over his head.

by TheBirds on Apr 21, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

It wasn't an "error"

since he never really had a chance to attempt to catch the ball it really isn’t a true error. Bad play, horrible play really but it can’t be ruled an error because he didn’t even attempt a catch. If the SS just stands on 2B as a ball goes past him it isn’t an error, yes he should have had it but it is not technically an error.

I love hockey and played in and throughout Illinois and Missouri for 10 years (up through high school) but I think that it translates poorly to television. Which is what I think hurts it. As hokey as the glowing puck that Fox had a few years ago was, I thought that it was a neat feature for those who didn’t know the game well enough to follow the puck when it was out of view.

My goodness

You guys must all be youngsters. I grew up many decades ago listening to Foster Hewitt broadcasting Toronto Maple Leaf games on radio. Foster’s he shoots, he scores was trademarked, and then he went to TV. Try following the puck on radio!. TV was a boon. Maybe black and white was better to follow the puck then nowadays in colour? Saturday night in the “parlour” at my grandparents was reserved for Hockey Night in Canada, and my grandmother and great aunt were as avid fans as the males of the Canuck species. The greatest quote by my great aunt was in the 1972 Canadian-Russian series, when she insisted on calling Vassilyev (sp?) the Silly Ass. And we won! The whole university shut down when that series was one, no one attended classes. Profs didn’t show up either. Almost as much entertainment as watching Bob Gibson in the world series. I am so happy that I am old and had the benefit of watching him pitch, instead of the 2009 angst of the rotation that wished it could (no offense to them, but you know what I mean).

by kkkkathmandubirdsview on Apr 22, 2009 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I never had trouble following the puck

but I played for a long time so just knew where it was based on how the players were behaving. The puck halo was annoying to me because they’d screw up and lose it behind the boards all the time—my reptilian, hockey player brain said it was one place when the halo said it was elsewhere.

It didn't used to be a problem

until I started watching in HD. In HD, now you can see the entire blue line area, or if it is the neutral zone, you can see parts of both blue lines. More hitting is now visable on screen and you can also see where the player is passing the puck.

Now, I can’t watch it in SD.

Still

Whatever system it is, it is a great game to watch. Recently moving from Asia to BC, I haven’t decided whether to be a regional fan of the Canucks or Flames, or go with my genes – which were bred on the Maple Leafs, when there were only 6 teams.

I have a hard time watching sport not in HD

Once you go to HD you can never go back

HD

I have HD, but honestly, I don’t really appreciate it. It just seems sharper to me, but not leagues better. But then I am a dinosaur with poor eyesight and hearing.

A lot of people don't have their TV properly calibrated right

Most TV’s are sold out of the store too bright to show them off in electronic stores

I played hockey too

So you kind of just get the feel where the puck is but more where it is going next.

Except

When some guy does the incredible. I saw this highlight a few months ago where this guy behind the net picked up the puck with his (curved) stick and carried it around the side of the net and threw it into the net. I can’t in my wildest dreams as a player think of doing that!

by kkkkathmandubirdsview on Apr 22, 2009 2:03 AM EDT up reply actions

That was a college player

I think he player for Michigan or BC can’t remember. It was a couple years ago. I think it is actually illegal to do that now I think.

I thought

That is was in the NHL, because it was a TSN highlight, but I can’t remember the teams. Pretty sure it wasn’t UBC. I will ask my son, who works for the NHL Network and send the reply. Anyhow, it was crazy – how many hours did he spend practicing that move?

Why would that be illegal?

Same Play but different people

I know the one I was thinking of at least was college players and he went to the other side as Crosby went.

I am pretty sure

that the one I saw was to the left of the net, so it must be the one to which you refer.

Oh my gawd

You guys are incredible with the technology. I guess that was the one, although I thought that the one I saw was to the left side of the net. But 2 guys cannot do that, right.

by kkkkathmandubirdsview on Apr 22, 2009 2:27 AM EDT up reply actions

maybe we are thinking of the same one

Cause the one I saw was to the other side of the net and actually looked smoother than that

I wish I still played

I haven’t played ice in years. My buddy is a goalie and plays in like 10 different leagues at once cause everyone needs a good goalie. My cousin is a former pro from Vancouver. The ice hockey mens league are pretty serious and solid in STL.

the last time I played

was in grad school years ago. Too many years in tropical places since. We used to play Sat. night at 11, hit the bar for last round, and then watch Sat. night live. Those were the days!

wonderful

Motte vs Putz — Motte definitely wins the prize for “second-most awful facial hair”.

BTW, remember when we didn’t trade motte plus half our minor league system for JJ Putz?

How unfortunate

to have that facial hair AND be named “Putz”…

… Oh, and to play for the Mets of course

very nice

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

wow, Bengie did that too last night

He missed his tag.

No, really, he missed the tag on the first guy, who sneaked back around and touched the plate.
