I haven't been around that long, but ...

I have participated in game threads during both tenures. I don’t see much difference. Game threads are emotional because we are all fans of the Cardinals. Fandom, by nature, is not rational; so to expect rational responses during a game thread is kinda silly. The comments in a game thread are quick and biased. They are not particularly well thought out because you will be at the next half inning by the time your thoughts are composed well enough.

I see game threads as a way to vent excitement and depression in a forum with others feeling the same things. This constant harping on what should or shouldn’t be in a game thread is silly. If we all keep it clean enough that we wouldn’t feel bad about showing our mothers what we wrote, then express all the despair and exasperation you would like. Just my take on it.

I wonder how much of a part Ankiel's slump comes from

all these years trying to make it back to the majors after what happened, and now he is finally inline for that big contract next year that he always assumed he would be recieving when he was a pitcher, and the pressure is getting to him.

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. i think it has more to do with the fact that he doesnt really have an approach

he still cant hit good breaking balls so he lunges at every fastball he sees. This leads to him being incredibly streaky.

I think

he’s just a guy with power, good athleticism, an improving eye, and a TON of holes in his swing & his approach to making MLB at-bats. He has big slumps. I’m sure he’ll come round eventually, just not sure we can carry him in the meantime.

there’s a difference between blowing a save situation in the 9th which we did alot last year, than losing in extra innings when we’re the away team.

I definitely still have a hangover from last season's bullpen

I always feel like the pen will blow it…especially against the Cubs in these games at Wrigley. Just have a feeling of foreboding that I can’t shake. And what’s with the HUA plays like Dunc just made today? I almost feel like the Cubs have gotten into this team’s head…

"Who is John Gall?"

by iron duke75 on Apr 18, 2009 7:44 PM EDT up reply actions

The bullpen can definitely be better...

But except for Reyes, it did pretty good today. The trouble was that the starter only went 5 innings (a day after the starter only went 4), forcing Tony to use a LOOGY instead of a regular reliever vs righties. Even counting Reyes, it was 3 runs in 5 2/3 innings vs 4 in 5 for the starter.

The mistake was not trying to get another starter, instead of hoping Carp would be okay. Even if Carp was healthy, that would allow you to move Piniero to the bullpen (who can be a decent long reliever).

The Cubs have the home field mojo

working for them again this year. But I always laugh when they lose it in October.

We REALLY need to get our starters to go longer in games and soon. This bullpen is going to be really fried in a few weeks, hell they are already. Mo needs to be looking for another starter…one that might be able to eat some innings at least.

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

by KYCards on Apr 18, 2009 8:02 PM EDT reply actions

Annoying

is relative. Due to time zone differences, I had to be up at 4:25 to watch this game today (and all of the other days) on gameday. Too many beer last night militated against the plan. Instead, I was left, for the 3rd day in a row, just going through the threads and living the game vicariously as folk argued, railed against TLR, the bullpen, and starters etc. I love it. Your apology is accepted, it is fun to follow the byplay here. I will again resolve to get up early tomorrow morning (and probably fail) so that I can apply an antidote to your pessimism real time.

New Yankee Stadium is a joke

The Indians were treating it like a little league field today (they hit 6 homeruns). They are saying this park is a bandbox and is going to be a nightmare for pitchers.

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

It makes it even funnier that ...

they spent all that damn money on pitching in the offseason. They are going to have a hard time coaxing big time pitchers into coming to the Bronx if they are going to get lit up light the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center.

by etp_stl on Apr 19, 2009 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

The bullpen has major problems (no duh!)

it’s not so much that they are terrible, it’s just they can’t hold a lead for snot. We’ve had to scored closer to 10 than 2 in all of our wins this year. That’s unsustainable and the pitching, mostly bullpen, is not only giving up startling numbers of runs but also logging heavy inning loads very early in the season.

This is setting up for a disasterous stretch at some point where the pitching will be completely frazzled and the offense takes 2 weeks off from getting in the endzone.

by Hardcore Legend on Apr 18, 2009 11:51 PM EDT reply actions

Starting pitching

Would have something to do with bullpen woes.

by kkkkathmandubirdsview on Apr 19, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

setting up for a disasterous stretch

No doubt. If the pitchers don’t start going longer and stop putting so much pressure on the pen every day this stretch might start this week. It’s not going to be easy this coming week with the Mets and Cubs coming to town. Yeah we have been scoring pretty good but If not for Ryan Ludwick’s hot bat right now these would have been uglier losses. It would be nice if Ankiel and Rasmus starts hitting.

But I’m not going to get too worried yet. We have had a hard time at Wrigley for several years now. The Cubs have some serious mojo going on there the past couple of years….and I’m not too suprised at these two losses. I expect a different outcome next weekend against these Cubs at Busch…….before I get too bent out of shape. But I really think Mo needs to be looking for some type of pitching help if there is anybody out there that can be of help…..might be too early for that though.

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

by KYCards on Apr 19, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Pitching

What type of pitching. A Rivera isn`t just going to appear out of the woodwork. Being an eternal optimist, I am hoping that Perez, Motte, and Franklin will be able to do it for us, rather than relying on mismatching Reyes (but it was extra innings, and extended bullpen).

by kkkkathmandubirdsview on Apr 19, 2009 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

I think we need another starter

I hope somebody from Memphis can come up and give us some quality innings soon. P.J might be able to since he should have his “debut jitters” over with now. I know it’s way too early for teams to be trading starters right now…so that’s pretty much out of the question.
I’d like to see our bullpen keep the ball in the park for a few games too. They have been giving up way too many long balls. Seems like they walk a guy and then give up a 2 or 3 run blast every game now. This HAS to stop.

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

by KYCards on Apr 19, 2009 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Sometimes i don't really catch the "geniality" in La Russa's moves.

I really can’t understand his decision of takin out Brian Barden with two men on base and no outs in the top of the 8th. Barden is batting .402. He’s 5 for 6 with two walks in this series and he was unbelievably taken out of the game with runners in scoring position and a chance to win the game in the 8th. To me that was a suicide move as when he made B.Ryan pinch hit instead of Ludwick against the Dbacks.
