Morning, guys. What year is it? This reminds me of very ungood memories.

Don’t know why Fox thinks I wanna watch Indians/Yankees here in central Texas…
"Who is John Gall?"
What! You don't wanna watch the Yankees?
Lord knows everyone always wants to watch the Yankees! Unless the Red Sox are playing….. best of all is Red Sox – Yankees, then everybody wants to watch, all the time, I mean, that’s teh only reason all those other teams exist, right? Competition for the Yankees and Red Sox?
There is a certain amount of satisfaction
in watching the Yanks give up 20 runs. This might not suck so bad after all…
"Who is John Gall?"
was the first one to miles too far in?
i think it was the same pitch
This ump is fucking awful
at calling strikes. It’s not that he’s gotten calls wrong, it’s the total inconsistency of the strikezone.
for whatever reason
fontenot seems to get a lot of help from the umpires. he’s like the greg maddux of scrappy infielders.

Honest assesment of our pitching this series
Ok… so i know it hasn’t been ideal, but realize that our pitching has given up approximately the same number of walks (actually 1 less, so far) and far less HR’s than the Cubs pitching.
And… we’ve still given up less runs overall than they have. And this Cubs team has basically been decided to be the NL representative for the WS…
My prediction:
If we can split the season series with the cubs, we will be at least the WC, and certainly a contender for the NL central title
I think you are reading way too much into one series in April :)

that people are flying off the handle about our pitching, when I think they are holding there own vs. a very good offense that is predicted to win the whole national league

Pujols is struggling right now…average keeps going down. He’ll get back on track but it’s frustrating to watch him not hit the cubs.
Of course Ankiel couldn’t hit off of tee right now so his problems look way, way worse.

Yeah. Because that works for Motte.
As LaRoche aptly put it: “You can throw 97, but if you’re not spotting it up good, then it’s probably going to get hit a little bit.”
It worked for him last year.
And it’s not like the alternatives (offspeed/breaking pitches) are viable alternatives.
I've been saying since June of last year that
Motte needs to develop a good secondary pitch. But he hasn’t so I want him throwing the fastball.

he was shutdown for the first inning. I don’t know what his multiple inning splits look like but it could be that more than 1 inning is a bad idea with him.
thats what a lot of cubbies fans were saying last year
they really rode him down the stretch and he lost a lot of control in those starts he got shelled; leaving his slider up a bit and walking a lot of guys. Bit like tonight. Don’t forget he musta pitched 20-odd yesterday too.

it was a dumb decision not to bunt
but it didn’t come back to bite him in the ass. seeing as how Rasmus struck out.
MyBrute - Where tiny gladiators rule the internets
Rasmus probably has a different approach if all he needs is a fly ball
so who knows
"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

How you blame Tony for two Ks?
managers give players a chance to perform. Players have to make plays
Proud sponsor of the Official 2009 StL Cardinal theme song:
This is getting ridiculous
I don’t know how we don’t bunt there to get the go-ahead run to third with one out and then go for sac fly.
Rasmus struck out, so it really doesn't matter anyway

TLR is a bad manager? I dunno. Seemed wierd to bunt yadi then let thurston swing away.

How good of a bunter is Thurston
and how easy is Gregg to bunt against?
maybe..
because a 1-run lead doesn’t sound like much, and it might be better to play for the big inning with our bullpen situation?

honestly
i’d just tip my hat to gregg. That was some great pitching. He had no right not to give up a run there…. And, worst of all, they can now just walk pujols in the next inning after ank Ks or gives a weak infield pop up. Bah. Of course, that’s after the cubs get some runs in this inning. BAH! lol….

Yea this zone has been big & small at times (KMac)

I respect the guy, but I don’t agree with all of his decisions. It makes me wonder sometimes, why he’s still the STL manager.

TLR
is deservedly a first-ballot HOFer. For all his reputation as a stats freak/obsessive analyst, I think some of his decisions are occasionally based on intuition/seat-of-pants, and he can’t admit to not playing percentages when those go south (like using Brendan Ryan instead of Ludwick the other night).
I often find myself defending TLR more than I would like, but the guy’s track record has been amazing.
Plus, if La Russa leaves STL, Pujols probably does too…..
That book by that Jackass Bissinger seems to portray LaRussa as hating stats.
by Hambone Willis on Apr 18, 2009 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't think he hates stats
TLR knows his splits upside down backwards and forwards. He’s probably with it enough to be conversant with the newer SABR stats too. But he occasionally plays his hunches, and more often than not I reckon they pay off, but when they don’t everybody is left scratching their heads….
That title went to Michael Barrett
who thankfully, no longer plays in Chicago.

I don't mind to an extent
but it gets out of hand and makes reading the game threads way less fun. I can be guilty of it too occasionally, but I hate reading “the game’s already over” when it’s tied up in the 9th. These situations are why people watch sports to begin with, I thought….
i think it's a psychological defense mechanism
If you think the cards are going to lose, and they do… you’re not as upset.
If they win you are even more ecstatic because you didn’t think it was going to happen!

any bullpen will suck if they consistently have to pitch 4 innings every night….
really we just need to stop it with the 2 out baserunners
though a shutdown reliever would always be welcome
It cannot be overstated
bottom 9th- extra innings on the road are simply excruciating.
