Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Is Mike Shannon turning into Harry Caray?

From today's game, following a Felipe Lopez hit: "You don't want to kick a sleeping dog, but the dog's not just taking the papers off the porch, he's stealing the baby." Bwah?

That's vintage Shannon

Dan Patrick used to have a segment on his show when he was at ESPN Radio where Rob Dibble would have to explain a Shannonism. It was the single most hilarious bit he’s ever done on the radio and I’m kinda upset he doesn’t do it anymore.

Ron Santo

Lets just hope he doesn’t turn into Ron Santo. Listening to him today was horrible, he adds nothing, and I really couldn’t stand him trying to remember what number he wore his rookie year. Man, he truly is about the worst radio announcer I have ever heard.

I can't stand Santo

It’s all about HIM all the damn time — I don’t know how the Cubs fans put up with it. He doesn’t explain anything, he’s horrible about describing situations and plays on the field, and his storytelling skills are god-awful. I think it had a lot to do with Cub fandom needing a go to voice after Harry passed, and Ron being the lifetime Cub made it an easy transition.

I could listen to Pat Hughes all day long though — you gotta love that smooth, even-keel voice. He’s like a shot of Valium after listening to Santo bounce off the wall of the booth.

Santo on Carpenter

A favorite exchange from last season:

Pat: Well, Ron, looks like the Cardinals put Carpenter on the DL.

Ron: Who?

Pat: Chris Carpenter.

Ron: …

Pat: The Cardinals ace?

Ron: Oh. That’s not good.
