Better for the catcher and the guy in the batter’s box, but I don’t care how the ump smells if he’s making good calls.

How is everyone holding up today?

Yesterday was ugly, today is scary.

Joel is getting roughed up, it’s a tough day to be a pitcher with the ball carrying and the strike zone. Not that I’m defending Joel too much, he’s still getting roughed up.

Hey, better than signing Garland though.

Thoughts on the Cards from BCB... pretty funny:

“This team is going to [do] more with less talent this year than any other team in baseball, only because it is demanded of them and nothing less is accepted. I give to you Exhibit A. As I write this little Fanpost, Yadier Molina stole second (yes, stole second), was advanced to third on a properly hit ball by Skip Schumaker, and driven in by some schmuck I have never head of. Like robots. "

Stat Whore

by FlimtotheFlam on Apr 15, 2009 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Lung Cancer treatment costs around $24,000

Average SS pay out is $12,000 a year. So if smokes take 2 years off the life of a person than it saves the Federal Govt money.

I am much more concerned by the fact that tobacco has an inelastic rate of .8. So for every 10% increase in price of cig’s there is an 8% drop in sales. So with decreased sales it directly effects the states that use that revenue when they need it the most.

Stat Whore

Huh

Directly affects the states in what way?

Means less tax collected by the states for cigarette sales

Stat Whore

by FlimtotheFlam on Apr 15, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

A 10% increase in the price and an 8% drop in sales quantity is still an increase in tax revenue. What am I missing here?

What a difference a game makes.

The offense was a juggernaut this game and I’m excited to see what PJ has in store for us in Chicago. He has really emerged since the beginning of spring and I hope he’s the real deal. I’ve got more faith in him than the other Memphis guys brought up in the past like Parisi and Boggs (though I don’t mind Boggs, he’s just not ML caliber yet).

by TheBirds on Apr 15, 2009 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

It wasn't pretty, but it's a win

At some point Rooney described it as looking like a spring training game. With all of the walks and errors that sounds about right.

by BTown Birds fan on Apr 15, 2009 7:56 PM EDT reply actions

so after today

we’re on a pace to score 928 runs, and Ludwick is on a pace to hit 48 home runs in 432 AB’s… his batting average actually went down today, and he went 2 for 5 with a walk. Lol.

- So, to ease his pain, you're supposed to take him to a ball game?
- Yes.

by SleepyCA on Apr 15, 2009 8:06 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, but unfortunately we're also on pace to

have a bullpen ERA of 5+ with a 50% save rate. Hopefully Motte and Kinney will settle soon.

by BTown Birds fan on Apr 15, 2009 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Motte should be fine

His FIP is under 3, once his BABIP regresses he will have great numbers. Getting rid of Thompson, and bringing up Perez should help a lot also.

a little of both

by vivaelpujols on Apr 15, 2009 11:14 PM EDT up reply actions

FIP is quite misleading at 5 innings

It’s only that low because he’s had long innings→many opportunities to come up with the 5 Ks. Granted he’s thrown strikes and has walked only one and isn’t getting tatooed to the point of getting home runs, but FIP is wrong in saying he’s been a sub-3 ERA type pitcher. The Ks haven’t been there anything like last year.

Not afraid to nitpick

by joker24 on Apr 16, 2009 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

FIP isn't misleading

It is what his numbers would look like if his BABIP wasn’t sky high.
