Talk Talk Talk
Howdy, folks. And how is everyone today?
Well, yeah, I know. Pretty awful game last night, wasn't it? Tough one to swallow, that.
Anyhow, I actually though we might do something a little bit different today, something that, as far as I know, we've never done here at Viva El Birdos. See, I took a couple of days of from work, yesterday and today, for a personal matter, and so I find myself with a couple of spare hours today before I have to be anywhere. I'm done with my RFT work (if you would like to read my full thoughts on the game last night, you can check them out here and here; the original article was really long, so my editor split it into two. Probably not a bad idea for me just pretty much all the time), and so I've got these extra hours to spend on VEB.
Well, rather than write up some rant about Tony (mostly because I've already done that), or do some more scouting reports (I just don't feel like it), I thought maybe we could just have sort of an impromptu chat.
So let's chat, people. I'll be here until right around two o' clock, at which point I'll put up a game thread and everyone can just read through whatever we got to here and add to it if they like.
Feel free to ask me anything; I may not know something, but I am wicked good with the bullshit. Don't feel confined to baseball, either, if you don't want. We can talk about records, or the weird crush that I have on the girl from the Esurance commercials, or my favourite 8 bit video games, my sex life (sadly, pretty much a dead end street there nowadays), or pretty much anything else you would like.
I have no idea if this is going to work or not; in fact, I'm almost anticipating it being a huge failure. Even if it is, though, it's going to be a glorious failure, and that's the best kind.

Thank you,

Slider
Without having data to back it up, it seems like Kinney has always worked outside the zone. His slider always seemed to be just off the corner to a RH. I wonder if it’s just a case of guys not biting.
True he needs to locate his fastball inside to set up the slider away and he is just not doing it.

WHERE THE HELL IS RYAN LUDWICK!!!
Someone please tell Tony that the guy with the highest OPS in 2008 among outfielders, the guy hitting over .400 and slugging over .700, the guy with the 17-game hitting streak, the guy WHO’S THE SECOND BEST HITTER ON THE TEAM should be playing everyday, or at least seeing at bats in a 6-6 game before the rest of the bench is emptied. Rotate Ankiel, Duncan and Rasmus between two spots, and give Ludwick his 700+ plate appearances.
And for the love of god, when Rasmus plays, PUT HIM IN CENTER. He catches the ball that Ankiel plays into a triple.

Minor League Coaches v College Coaches
I’ve recently heard that one major factor for a 1st round high school pitching draft prospect in his decision to sign or go to college is that the coaches in college are significantly better. I’d never heard this before (I did notice that the salaries for NCAA coaches is better than MiLB ones). Have you? Do you have an opinion on it?
And if you were a 1st round premium HS pitching talent that could go to a great college or sign, what amount of money would it take for you to pass on college?
Thanks.
I disagree with that.
I think the focus of the coaches in college is much different than those in the minor leagues, as they’re trying to win, while the minor league coaches are focused on development of talent.
If I were a pitcher in high school, I would absolutely skip college for pro ball, even for a relatively modest sum. You can always go back to school (though sans scholarship, admittedly), but that lightning in your arm is only there for a while, and who knows when you could toss a curve and just blow it all to hell?
If you've got a blacklist, I want to be on it.
by the red baron on Apr 15, 2009 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Yep. Think about
the incentives of a college vs. minor league manager … a college coach won’t suffer much, if any, if he ruins a kid’s arm. The minor league coach has to answer to his team’s front office if he blows up a prospect.
by MdRedbirdFreak on Apr 15, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions
That was my first thought too
They only need the arm for 4 years why the minor league coach would try to protect the arm
Stat Whore
by FlimtotheFlam on Apr 15, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I understand that part of the argument,
but what about the question of whether a college coach (I’m thinking top-25 programs) can teach the kid more about pitching?
See,
I don’t think that a college coach is actually going to teach a kid as much.
Look at it this way: if a kid comes in to a college program, he’s there to pitch, and to win. He goes into the minors, he’s there to progress and advance.
Say there’s a pitcher who desperately needs to remake his mechanics. The thing is, changing his mechanics is going to make him a much better pitcher in the long run, but he’s likely going to suffer, and possibly pretty badly, in the meantime.
Which is more likely to help him make that change: a college coach who needs his pitchers at peak effectiveness this weekend against the cross state rivals, or a low A ball pitching coach whose job is to get this guy to the major leagues some day?
That’s my take, anyhow.
If you've got a blacklist, I want to be on it.
by the red baron on Apr 15, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Sorry to be so late to the party
but one correction/addition is that it is very common (maybe even required?) for the contracts for HS players going to the minors to include provisions for paying for the player’s college if he goes back to school. I don’t know what the time limit, etc. on these clauses might be, but I know it happens quite often. There have been several pitchers not make it through the minors that ended up playing college football, usually as QB’s, and their tuition, etc. is paid by the ML team, not a school scholarship.

High School local prospect question
There’s this kid from my local school who is a senior and has signed on to play at Kent State next year. His name is Addison Dunn and he throws in the low 90s and is pretty much unhittable at this level. There are whispers around town that he might get drafted. Does anyone know of any scouting sites that have up to date info on high school kids? I’m just curious what they say if indeed scouts have actually heard of him, which I doubt. He’s a good talent but I live in BFE PA. Other Kinney and Joe Beimel no other players really come from here.
Hmm.
Check out Perfect Game, Brewerfan, or just google his name, see what you find. Those are usually my first three plans of action when I start researching a guy. Plenty of other places, obviously, but those are good spots to start with, at least.

That was informative
and mostly substantiated something I heard Leach say in a local radio show. He said something along the lines that Todd’s delivery looked like he had to put too much into each pitch to be able to last 100+ pitches.
Looking at the clip linked above, however, I was reminded of Gibson (probably just the fall away follow through).

I don't like it.
I know there are questions about his delivery, and his size, and stuff like that, but I’m of the mind that if a guy is having success in a role, you leave him there until he proves he can’t do it. Todd has had nothing but success as a starter so far, and I think it’s a terrible use of a resource to move him to relief right now.
Of course, if it gets him up here faster and pitching useful innings, it may not be such a bad thing, but I still don’t like it.

yeah
that’s what I thought, he seemed to be quite successful in his career, why mess with a good thing? who cares if he isn’t tall? you’d think that in an organization the converts outfielders to second baseman, they could overlook him not fitting a stereotype.
but yeah, if he can get up here faster and be a great piece to the bullpen, then I guess it might be worth it. who knows, maybe he will be closing and we will have a new Bad Boys going on with Perez, Motte, and Todd

Yeah, but...
We really don’t need another right-handed arm in our pen. We already have Perez, Motte, KMac as cheap, young righties. Riefers is climbing the ranks quickly as well.
And, as far as SP goes, what do we have? Garcia (maybe), Boggs, Walters? Todd could be every bit as good as any of those guys if kept in a starting role.

I wouldn’t go Notre Dame, just because I don’t like Indiana.

You would probably have the best time at Austin, as that city is just an amazing place to spend time, especially as it’s in the middle of such a wasteland of a state. But overall, BC might be your best choice. Tough to say, though, as it would all depend on how important you feel it is to be around cool people while you’re studying for whatever it is you’re stufying.

Can you give a quick scouting report on Donovan Solano and Daniel Descalso?
does either have a chance to be stick at SS? Who’s the better hitter? Can either maintain their hitting as they progress through AAA and maybe to the big leagues? I know someone at FR was unimpressed with their performance last night but if one or both of them can be ready by the end of next year it would be nice and we wouldn’t have to rush Kozma or Vasquez. I am personally more impressed with Descalso but i have never seen either of them in person and he seems to play less SS than Solano.

I honestly don’t know a whole lot about, to be honest with you, but i’ve never been all that impressed with his stat lines.
Descalso, on the other hand, I’m a big fan of. He won’t make it at short, as his range isn’t quite good enough, but the kid has a beautiful swing from the left side. He burned me last year when I made him a pick for a breakout season, but I still think he’s got a good chance to become an offensive-minded 2B. Probably not quite the hitter Vasquez is, but I still think DD could be pretty damned good.

I got this :-)
WORK ON YOURSELF FIRST First step into getting a high value girl is to be a high value guy. You be average you will get average.
1. Genetic good looks HELP but are not essential. The guy that is considered the best pick up artist in the world is 5’6, bald and pretty ugly. Baron hit it with WELL GROOMED! WELL DRESSED! (and by well I don’t mean your stupid polos, khakis or whatever football jersey you wear “out”. Girls are not wired to go by attraction alone. This took me a lonnnnggg time to realize.
2. First interaction = you do 90% of the convo…keep it INTERESTING! this means don’t talk about what all the other guys talk about (this is the hard part). Have pre-planned stories (hopefully true) that you’ve re-told many times that include a range of emotions like the time you saved the kitty kat from the garbage truck then got drunk and ended up deported and pantsless.
3. Money = not important. AMBITION! is where it’s at. Girls want a guy they can have returns on if they invest thier time in you.
4. Be strong and alpha. Don’t put up with her bullshit (She tests you and if you fail…well you fail) still protect her when needed. If you look and act beta and average you will be a place holder boyfriend or end up with an average place holder for yourself.
5. Do NOT hit on a girl, go for her number, etc typical guy bs, until she shows interest in YOU first. She has 5 guys a day doing this. What makes you any different than the last 5 ass clowns? (i’ll give you a hint, nothing…i don’t care if you think you’re confident or funny) Again, best case scenario is you’ll be her place holder/ego boost. Make her realize that you like her NOT for her looks (it actually helps that you actually do like her for other things ;-) I’m dating a stripper at the moment because I don’t treat her like one. She has assclowns worshipping her 24/7, she comes to me for real value and the real value I see in her beyond her nice tan and ridiculous body (oh its cartoonish…oh yeah).
6. Anymore will cost ya $300 plus cost of materials :-)

Dear RB
Will Pujols have the most MLB win shares for the current decade (2000-2009), despite starting his career in 2001?
(This is secretly a question about whether there is a win shares site that goes back before 2004, which is when the THT starts. The main contender for the title is A-Rod.)
www.mpgillusion.com
I would bet he would,
but I have no way of knowing, as I face the same lack of knowledge you do about any other site.
If you've got a blacklist, I want to be on it.
by the red baron on Apr 15, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions
My rough estimate
According to THT, Pujols is heading into this year with 286 win shares.
A-Rod has over 400 win shares at THT. According to Bill James’s original book, published in 2002 or so, A-Rod had 110 win shares (roughly) before 2000. That gives A-Rod around 300 for the ’00 decade going into 2009—assuming you can compare THT numbers and Bill James numbers. Obviously, A-Rod played one more year in the 2000s than Albert did.
www.mpgillusion.com
Bill James Online has Win Shares for active players.
It gives Pujols 276 through 2008, and Mr. Rod 288.
Well, technically [breaks out slide rule]
You could argue that mathematically speaking, the 3rd millenium began with the year 2001, since there was no year 0. 2000 was the last year of the 20th century, so it doesn’t make much sense to count it as the first year of this decade. If we count ten fingers, we don’t start with “zero” and end with “nine”; we go 1-10. This would put Albert on a more even footing.
Matty B B
What does your slide rule say about 1980? Was 1980 part of the 1970s, and 1970 was not?!
Decade-start versus millenium-start aside, Albert is obviously the best player of the millenium!
www.mpgillusion.com
Well, admittedly it's kind of a difficult argument to make
because we often talk of the “80’s” and “90’s” and “2000’s” and so forth, and a year that has those numbers in it will automatically be considered one. I guess it depends on whether you’re talking about the “best player of the 00’s or aughts” or the “best player of the current millenium/decade”. Strictly speaking those are two different things because we’re talking about two distinct sets of ten years: 2000-2009 or 2001-2010.
I've been too subtle
Since I asked about decade (not millenium), my mapping of decades looks like
1970-1979 = The 70s (smiley faces, oil embargo, Iran hostage crisis, etc.)
1980-1989 = The 80s (Ronald Reagan, the Replacements, stock market crash, etc.)
1990-1999 = The 90s (“don’t ask, don’t tell,” Beck, dotcom bubble, etc.)
2000-2009 = The aughts (etc., etc.)
2010-2019 = The teens
2020-2029 = The roaring 20s
I’d be willing to bet that definition of the 70s, 80s, and 90s holds for 99% of people. The teens and 20s will hold up that way, too.

Baseball Prospectus Piece
Today on Cards:
It’s no wonder then that a major league scout, who saw a lot of the Cardinals during spring training, hedged his bets about as far as one can hedge them when asked how he thought they would fare in 2009. “Sometimes, I look at them and think they can win 90 games, then I’ll look at them again and see a team that could lose 90,” said the scout. “I hate to be so wishy-washy, but I don’t know what to make of them. They could be really good or they could be really bad.”
RB, your thoughts. Closer to 90 wins or losses? I’m sure most of would say the 90 wins is more likley.
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=8744
I would
definitely say 90 wins, though I can also see the guy’s point about why it’s so hard to predict this team. There’s a lot of stuff that could go seriously wrong, but I still think they’re a better team than what they’re getting credit for to this point.

not in a sick way, but needles intrigue me, but when i give blood i pass out. I used to go and try it every time they would call me, but now it seems like everytime i get close to the year cutoff period, I get another tatoo and have to wait another year.
I can't stand needles
I got an extremely painful booster shot when I was about eight years old, and I think that’s part of it. Anyways, I’ve never passed out from getting blood drawn or getting my tattoo or anything, but one time about a year ago I almost passed out because the nurse had such a hard time finding my vein. She did take more than normal (for a specific blood test), but I really think the digging around my arm with it is what got me. As I was holding the gauze on my arm, I felt really weak. The nurse was looking away, and I said “Ma’am? I don’t feel too good.” She turned around and literally ran to me to put my legs up in the air. Apparently my lips were white.

Tony was thinking B. Ryan was going to put the ball in play and his speed would prevent a double play? That he thought there was a greater chance Ludwick might strike out/hit into double play, but Brendan might just hit a weak grounder and get a run home?

Walters for Boggs on Friday
I bet that’s the thinking. They want Boggs available to eat innings in long relief for the next two games as the bullpen has been worked over. Then they send Boggs down on Friday and exchange for Walters who starts against the Cubs.
i can make an argument for kinney, motte, or k-mac.
if walters is a temporary starter (doubt they’d burn a roster spot for a one-off call up, but maybe), they could send k-mac down to stretch him out as a starter. i don’t like this both for roster management reasons and for the reason that kyle has not looked great in his relief outings.
kinney and motte have both struggled in their roles and have remaining options. i could see either of them being sent down.

Why do these Alpha Male athletes, who the Cardinals draft out of college (not high school) on things like character and maturity, turn into such panty waists when they reach Memphis?

What makes everyone so sure Oquendo will be a good manager.
Baseball's only fun if you're playing it, watching it, or thinking about it.
I really think that Tony is a crappy managaer
There is only so much effect that a manager can have on a game, and the really good ones, just make the right moves and don’t try to be so freaking innovative. However, Tony, in my mind, affects the game more than any other manager in baseball (maybe Dusty, because he actually fucks up players). He constantly makes really crappy lineups, insisting on putting struggling hitters in front of Pujols (even though it has been proven that lineup protection is a myth), and putting guys like Ryan, Greene and Barden in the top of the order.
He leverages relievers terribly, and overreacts when a young relievers struggles, saying that they isn’t ready to be put in high pressure situations. However, when one of our crappy veterans struggles, he defends them and keeps putting them in tight spots regularly. That is such bullshit reasoning. In rare cases do nerves and guts outweigh actual talent.

I don't know if I buy that.
Sure he makes weird decisions that don’t always pan out. I think most managers do. But it seems like every year we have a ton of question marks and players that could go either way in terms of their performance. Many more times than not, those players on the fence produce years that you wouldn’t expect from them. Is it Tony’s doing? I don’t know but the evidence seems to suggest that he gets a lot out of marginal players.
I agree that he
does get a lot out of marginal players. My problem is that for some parts of the roster I feel like he prefers marginal players. Often he’s the driving force in seeing that said marginal players are even on the damn team.

Loved Taguchi.
Wish he would open up a restaurant by the ballpark serving both traditional Japanese cuisine and southern style hearty chow. He could call it So Food.
I have that copyrighted, by the way.

Red Baron vs. Jeff Gordon
Not sure if you ever read Jeff Gordon’s stuff for STLtoday. If you haven’t, then don’t waste your time. If they are willing to pay someone to write about a sport and a team he apparently knows nothing about, then surely you could get a job at the Post and cause me less frustration. Any thoughts on how awful Gordon is and how he manages to get paid for his thoughts?
I've learned that there are a lot of terrible sportswriters out there
have you ever read FJM?

FJM is great
I actually broke down Gordo’s article is similar fashion today and e-mailed it to my friends. Today’s was just awful I do not know why I torture myself and read his garbage. I am convinced he gets paid by the Cardinals to spin anything their way.

You may have seen this one...
but there’s a classic FJM article about Tony’s decision making in the 2007 allstar game. It’s making fun of Hummel instead of Gordon, but I thought it kind of appropriate today.

yeah, Gordo's not so good.
I’ll just leave it at that, though I have gone after him in more detail over at my paper gig.

Alright, everybody.
That was a lot of fun, but I’m running out of time. Gonna go put up a GT now. Anything else, go ahead and put it down, and I’ll try to read back through this later.
I actually did this much longer than I meant to, but it was really cool.

What goes up, must come down
Spinning wheel, spinning ’round…
One of my favorite oldies. For the longest time I thought that was a Chicago song because of all the instruments.
It took Rich Harden
93 pitches to get through 3 innings. Ouch. At least the little bears bullpen will be stretched a little when we show up.
And I say England's greatest prime minister was Lord Palmerston.
struck out 8 in 3 innings
that’s awesome. And 4 ER, 4BB, and an HR.
- So, to ease his pain, you're supposed to take him to a ball game?
- Yes.
