Game 8 Overflow Thread

I was at the gym on a bike when Albert laced the changeup into the stands.  A reflexive fist pump and clap earned me some strange looks.

It was worth it.

PS - Albert's on pace for 80+ HRs right now.

it seems

like the percentages vary drastically as the innings get later. i would think that if it’s 1-1 with a guy on first in the 3rd inning or the 8th, the %chance to win would be pretty much the same, but i guess they calculate more chances to come back earlier in the game?

No!

And that is the problem. last year he was consentily setting at 93-94 and could hit 96. (someone feel free to correct). But this year he is down to 91 unless the FSN gun is off.

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

by Tudor's Electric Fan on Apr 14, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't buy it.

I think you’ll see Motte in there the first time he gets a chance with a 3 run lead. He just wants to work him back into it. Until Motte takes it, or Perez comes up, this team has no closer.

by etp_stl on Apr 14, 2009 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

But if you are simply looking for the best opportunity

to get a guy out and not staying within defend roles (“Set-up Man”, “Closer”), Ryan Franklin had been giving up solid contact and was facing a guy who had success against him. Tying run at 1st, send in the LOOGy.

Franklin got us the win and I’m grateful to him for that. But I’m just really fearful we are going to see Tony go back to Franklin as closer in 1 run games because he feels ‘safe’ with the veteran…despite what he did last year.

by Hardcore Legend on Apr 14, 2009 12:21 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't know that TLR is enamored with Franklin as closer.

If he felt all that comfortable with him, he wouldn’t have begged for another option. He didn’t exactly hand the keys over to him last year, as much as he was backed into allowing him to finish games last year.

I still think that either Perez or Motte will have the job by the All-Star break. If they haven’t, I think it will be because neither guy has earned the job. He eased both Wainwright and McClellan into those high-leverage situations, and I think he is looking to do the same with Motte and Perez.
