Giants keep Perdomo, leave Cards nothing from Anthony Reyes trade
Giants manager Bruce Bochy confirmed on Tuesday that his bullpen will include Rule 5 draftee Luis Perdomo, despite the fact that Perdomo gave up a homerun Monday, his second in 11 IP this spring.
So its now official. The Cardinals gave away Anthony Reyes, in effect. They have nothing left from trading Reyes to the Indians last year. What an error in judgement.
"The guy throws 93, 94 with a good slider. He's been impressive," Bochy said.
Perdomo has 3 saves in four opportunities, along with 2 wins this spring. And he has 10 strikeouts in 11 IP, while he has given up 5 walks.
It puts the Cardinals' error in focus to consider how doubtful it is that right now the Giants would make a straight trade of Perdomo for Brad Thompson.
Or imagine how much better the Cardinal bullpen would be right now if McClellan took over Thompson's role as long reliever and Perdomo took McClellan's role....
Or imagine Reyes still with the Cardinals, with Duncan and LaRussa letting him pitch from his strengths. The 27-year-old Reyes went 2-1 with a 1.83 ERA in six starts for the Tribe in August and September last season, after he was acquired in a July trade with the Cardinals. Reyes has a 0.75 ERA this spring in four appearances, including 2 starts. Sheesh!
I know, I know, that horse trade has already been beaten to death. But with Perdomo now officially being kept by the Giants, it's time to note the last nail being driven into the coffin....

Well,
just because Bochy said that they’re keeping him doesn’t mean that the Cards don’t get him back. If he doesn’t do so hot, then they will return him. Bochy’s word isn’t final-there’s always the off chance that he struggles and the Giants give him back.

Exactly...
If I’m not mistaken Perdomo has to be active for 90 games or days during the season, or the Giants have to offer him back. Though this makes it more likely we won’t get him back, it’s anything but definitive.

One more thing...
doesn’t the drafting team pay $50K to the former team when picking up a rule five player? So, we didn’t get nothing.
For the love of God, please know that I’m being sarcastic.

he has to be on the active roster the whole entire year unless injured.

Probably not the last nail
There is a good chance that at some point one of those two players (Perdermo, Reyes) will accomplish something spectacular, at least over a short period of time, that will receive some headlines, at which point everyone will be upset and cry themselves to sleep that night.
But oh well. Everyone makes mistakes. Heck, I need to leave in five minutes and I’m typing on a blog! Yea, I’m not going to be on time today…

I'm not going to
comment on this at this time. I’ll just wait for Jillsinmo to chime in and then give her a big +1.

The Tribe on Reyes
APV, at Let’s Go Trib, posted the following write up on Reyes. A lot of this sounds familiar:
The data on Reyes also isn’t super because of limited major-league exposure the past two years, but…Reyes looked like a different pitcher last year than the year before, throwing harder and inducing more contact. Pitching out of the bullpen in St. Louis his fastball was sitting just over 92. In Cleveland it was 90-91. In 2007 it was sitting in the upper 80s. According to Josh Kalk’s pitch f/x data he was throwing 93 last season. His secondary stuff, based on both sets of data, was about 3mph faster than 2007. He switched from a pretty dramatic fly-ball pitcher with serious HR problems, to a moderate GB pitcher with a much more friendly HR-rate. As a result of all this he was more successful than any previous extended stretch in the majors (his cup of coffee in 2005 was better, but very brief). However he did so with his worst K-rate at any level over the previous four years.
In theory, Reyes 3-pitch combination gives him an interesting set of options, in that he has two pitches with very similar break (fastball and change) but dramatically different speeds (low 90s, upper 70s), and two pitches with similar speed (curve and change) but very different breaks. Coming through the minors he became a top pitching prospect by putting up good K-rates (8+/game), good walk rates, and despite being a fly-ball pitcher, not allowing many HRs (<1/9IP). Last year he was a low K, high GB pitcher, and seemed to have some success at that. I don’t know which version will show up in Cleveland for 2009. If he doesn’t do either, that’s probably a bad sign. There’s not a lot of evidence his increased velocity was helping him last season, but his velocity will be another interesting thing to keep track of as the early season progresses.
While I wish the guy all the best, AVP is right that Reyes has posted some awfully confused stats these past couple of years. According to the Indians depth chart, though, he’s the fifth starter.

so now that he's pitching the way duncan wanted him to,
he is pitching better?
is that the moral of the story here? i know, small sample size, etc. but i’m not really sure what to take from that excerpt.

I thought that was interesting, as well
sure seems like that’s what’s going on. I have a feeling the “low HR rate” bit won’t continue, though.
- So, to ease his pain, you're supposed to take him to a ball game?
- Yes.

He's pitching his way and Duncan's way at the same time...
…or something like that. I don’t know. My head hurts.

Ah. but he is NOT featuring a sinker. Wedge likes his 4-seamer, and has encouraged him to use it. He uses it a lot.
That, and they don’t have a one size fits all pitching plan. First and foremost in their planning is the pitchers’ strength. Second, they look to the hitters weakness. Reyes and his catcher (he throws to both Martinez and Shoppach) plan together. He gets more ground balls off of his change up and curve ball then he ever did off of his sinker when he was here.
I still maintain, and probably will until I die, that Duncan was wrong. Reyes didn’t need to be a ground ball pitcher-he needed to be a pitcher who could get more ground balls. That’s exactly what he’s done since he’s been with Cleveland. The results have been better too. You also can’t just assume that Reyes is an idiot and didn’t learn anything when he was struggling. I think it’s pretty clear that he did.
But he was never going to make it here as long as they were forcing the sinker. It simply is not a good pitch for him and he never threw it with confidence or conviction.
I expect his K rate to come back to the 5.5/6.0 range with the elbow problem behind him. I don’t know if he’ll be great, good, or just useful. I think he’ll be one of those things and Cleveland is handling him in a way that makes me think he’s part of the present and the near future. Good for him to finally get some love from an employer.
Now go ahead and hit me. I don’t care. He should have been traded when ST 2008 ended. After that date, he became low hanging fruit. A big, old, $50,000 basket worth. But yay! LaRussa and Duncan are comfortable. I just hope they have a plan in place for the next pitcher in the system that’s not quite what they want to work with. Somehow, I doubt it.

before anybody snaps at jill, just know that somebody will remember your comment
in August when reyes has a summer’s worth of pitching stats under his belt.
i for one am very much ready to leave my opinion open depending on what happens in cleveland. if reyes succeeds there, then I’ll be happy to say LaRussa and Duncan were wrong. if he doesn’t I’ll be happy to say that it was anthony.

Come on
This one model of pitcher concept isn’t exactly correct; They’re not exactly giving Jason Motte the bums rush. I think Duncan just knows how to make mediocre pitchers (like Reyes) into above-mediocre pitchers. If Reyes would have bought in like Wellemeyer (similar pitchers, in my opinion), it’d be a different story.

you gotta admit it does seam like they are playing favorites sometimes
otherwise why would he try & force YP & ARay to pitch one way & one way only when it’s clearly not in their best interest to?
to also be fair, i haven’t heard Dave say anything else about YP pitching to contact since late last year. just that he wants him to work on his slider more. which everyone agrees he should do.

I don't think they're treating perez unfair at all
his off speed stuff needs work. If he threw as hard as Motte, it wouldn’t need as much work, since he could rely strictly on the fastball.
That being said, he (perez) should probably still be with the team going north to Memphis with the final bullpen cut this weekend. I don’t have a problem with what they did, I just think they should have waited longer to do it to evaluate what in the hell is wrong with KMacC.

I think he has two choices
1) Pitch him underground.
2) Plunk him.
I go for the latter. He did bust up a perfect game.
I’m kidding. The correct answer is walk him-at least two of the pitches should be high and tight.

This line of thought is dumb.
Are the Indians pissed that we finally got something out of Ryan Ludwick? I don’t see them ruminating over it, but I’ll take Ludwick over Reyes any day of the year. Are the Padres pissed that Ozzie turned out awesome in STL? Who cares? Should the Jays have kept Glaus and let Rolen twist in the wind? Probably, but this is simply the nature of the thing. At least we didn’t trade Nathan, etc. for AJ Pierzynski. Boston would rather have Hanley than Beckett right now, but that’s no longer up to them. Players break out, things change, and this is all much too unpredictable to really be concerned with.
Space.
It's a problem we face.
So we never go anywhere.
We just stay in one place.

Reyes could have worked.
I was a fan of Reyes, I thought he could have been great here but we all know that if you dont 100% mindlessly follow TLR and Daddy Duncan then you will not last here (ask Adam Kennedy). If Reyes goes on to win lets just 10-12 games and makes 30 starts and Pinerio is blowing wins again then we should regret this. I think Anthony could have worked here.

Perdomo DFAed
Good news…
