Freese sent to minor league camp
I am not sure i totally understand what it means to be assigned to minor legaue camp, but i read that this is exactly what has happened to Mr. Freese. Wouldn't this mean that he is officially out of the 3rd base competition and also out of the race for a bench spot?
Mather must have really impressed so far and i continue to hear how much TLR really likes Mather as an athlete.

Just saw this and was going to do a fanpost. Here’s a link.
I guess the injury just wasn’t going to heal quickly enough for Freese to be a fill-in for Glaus. And Ian Ostlund is the first Loogy departure.

it probably didn't make the vegas odds, but
anybody who took odds on craig staying in camp longer than both wallace and freese just made a killing.
even though craig, barden, and ryan are probably at least semi-credible 3b, i think we’re going to see mather at third. unless the yankees want him and will pay in pitching. . . .

Any chance Allen Craig opens at 3B ?
The man is hitting .471. Or he makes the team as backup 3B/1B/OF? The path seems clear with Wallace and Freese gone.

he's got my attention
of course, he had it before…

I don't see what the point of playing Craig at 1B is... as he is blocked by Pujols and probably Duncan.
Duncan with his .333 average seems to be well on his way to at least 4th OF and backup 1B.
Craig right now seems like a good candidate to be a sort of Spiezio/Wigginton supersub. I’d like to see him get playing time at both 3B and 2B and possibly OF: now that he’s proven he can hit.

Given Freese's troubles
And given that it would suck to have a paper bat like Barden or Ryan backing up third, I think that the backup corner-infield spot could go to a worse candidate than Craig. I like giving him a shot.
Might up his trade value if he’s decent, too.

I feel bad for the guy
For a player like Freese it’s all about waiting for your big opportunity to show that you could play in the bigs. Glaus going down made 3B Freese’s position to lose, and it’s unfortunate that he had this freak injury at the same time. I hope he can bounce back and earns a call up at some point this season.
Patiently awaiting the day Colby Rasmus does this: .275/.381/.551/.932, 29HR, in St. Louis...

Yeah
I like him. I still think he could be a 1-2 win 3B somewhere. Surprised we couldn’t get a mid-level pitching prospect from someone for him.

very surprised
since I probably would have bet 1,000,000 internet dollars that Freese was going to start the year at 3B… but I guess he was hurt, so sucks for him!

Hoping he gets the Speizio role…

According to Mozeliak...
…Freese was sent because of his injury. From Matthew Leach’s story:
“In Freese’s case, it’s just about getting him healthy. Major League camp is not a place to be rehabbing, unless, of course, you’re on the roster. This will take a little bit of stress off of him and allow him to focus on getting himself right without the pressure of thinking he’s got to get back on the field.”

but why is MLB camp a place to learn an entirely new position?
