Card's sign Reyes
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3955456
I'd have chosen Ohman if all things were equal. Will have to wait and see what the contract is for. I'd hope $1M or less for this year. I worry about Reyes and his weight. The guy is listed at 250 and 6'1"
Just wanted to get this link up so we can start talking about weather we jumped off and got the right lefty or not.

Oh man.
We must never let that fade out.
I’m already envisioning a t-shirt — a red Cardinals Reyes jersey with sweat-shadowing along the back and under the kneck. I’d buy it.
On with the (good) youth movement!
that would be expensive
haha,
thanks for the attempt, but I have no excuses to make for that one.

Reyes
I think he’s found his niche as a lefty relieve. He’s had great stats w/ Minn for 3 years now. The only concern would be injury….especially to gameday buffet in the clubhouse. I’m happy if its 1mm or less. I’d like to see 2 yrs 1.5 million actually.
oh crap, remember what happened the last time we had a LOOGY pitch in the WBC?
i hope this isn’t anther flushing away of millions of dollars

No weight concerns for me..
Dig this – his last name translates into English as “Kings”…As I recall, Ray King was good for a year or two, and I we only have him from two years.
Rey de las Hamburguesas? Burrito King? Gordito?
yeah
who cares, he’s fat! and good! Sabbathia anyone?

My first thought....
was Anthony. Of course, I realize he’s not a free agent, but hearing “Cards” and “Reyes” in the same sentence made me shudder for just a moment there.
i've been having ARay flashbacks for the past half hour

NOOOOOOOOOOOO
Don’t do it Anthony… NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, you can’t throw a hanging curveball right down the middle, Jim THome will hit a homerun.

In what respect?
Because Ohman and Biemel are better than Reyes at pitching in the game of baseball.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

Yeah I guess
It’s arguable either way on Beimel vs Reyes.
I think Reyes might be a slightly better LOOGY but Beimel is a bit better vs righties, which for me gives him the edge. I’d be happy with either. Given Miller has been murder on lefties the last couple of years I was hoping for someone who was at least capable against righties (Beimel’s not great, don’t get me wrong, but he’s a bit better than Reyes, who needs his innings severely managed).
Ohman is definitely head and shoulders above, though, whichever way you want to argue it.

Reyes and Miller
Seems to be a pretty good 1-2 punch on the left side. With Ring, Manning, Ostlund, or Maekawa at least we have some kind of depth in case one of these two slip or get injured. We didn’t have any of that depth last year on that side of the bullpen. Now, with Perez, Motte, and Kinney, you have to figure at least one of them will take the closer’s role by the horns. There may be some light at the end of the tunnel. Still quite a few if’s, but what season doesn’t?
we need the light at the end of the tunnel
to shine on one more experienced, capable starter

im happy
at least they are doing something. my hopes are rising up little by little for this year. On MLB 2k9 Khalil Greene is really good, so maybe thats a sign!
Aaron Miles is worth it.
THANK GOD... THANK GOD.... The bullpen is complete!!!!...
unless they sign Pedro to close. Still, now I can sleep easy at night.
I like the way this BP is shaping up.
I’m pretty happy with how the team is shaping up in general. I expect good things.
Mo pulled another Lohse. Good job Mo. Way to hang in there amongst all the Mo bashing.

Yeah, Loshe was good in the last half of 2007 as well so he's not getting his deal based solely on one year.
I would have rather seen the money spent on Derek Lowe but I think they’ll break even on Loshe.
Its not that the Cards really don’t want to spend extravagantly in the Free Agent Market. They just prefer to give the big contracts to players that they already have and are familiar with. Like the Cubs did with Fukudome, it doesn’t make sense to give multiyear deals to guys you really don’t know anything about.
Overall, I think the FO has a pretty good idea of which guys to sign and keep and which players to let walk.
by Czechguardsman on Mar 6, 2009 1:01 AM EST up reply actions
Lohse was worth his contract
but in this economy we could have gotten more value for the amount of money we spent on him. So it was still a bad deal.

I think that they just jumped the gun on signing Loshe because
management didn’t want to go deep into the offseason with Waino, Welly, and Piniero as the current 1,2,3 with Carpenter as a wildcard. I think I would just rather see 45 million dollars allocated for a player with more upside. Loshe was worth that in 2006/2007 but not at the depressed 2009 rate.

Now I remember
Dennis Reyes sounded familiar, but I thought I was just confusing him with Al Reyes. Then I started reading his bio, and that’s when I remembered that once upon a time there were comparisons made between him and Fernando Valenzuela for various reasons (southpaw, from Mejico, physical appearance). Dennis didn’t do the “stare at the sky” thing in his delivery or have a screwball, though. Even though he was a starter for portions of his career, it seems like he has found a good niche. I am excited about this signing. A small step, but a good one.
born Dodger blue, now dyed Cardinals red
In hindsight, I'm actually glad that they signed Reyes as opposed to Ohman.
Not that Ohman is any worse than Beimel or Reyes, but Ohman has been hanging around the NL Central and the NL for a long time so our primary rivals should be very familiar with him. Reyes has been pretty much in the AL for the last 5 years so hopefully he’ll come here with a shock affect against clubs that haven’t seen very much of him.

Also Reyes is cheaper than Ohman would have been.

Anyone else as sated as I am...
with this bullpen roster
McClellan, K
Perez, C
Motte, J
Kinney, J
Franklin, R
Miller, T
Reyes, D
That bullpen has the potential to do wonders for our dubious starting 5. When I think of a 7th, 8th, 9th trio of Kinney, Motte, and Perez it makes me want to lean back in my chair, tap my fingers together and laugh diabolically as I ponder the fate of opposing teams’ batters come opening day.
sated and more.
I think our Bullpen is a real strength –
4 young hard throwing righties
2 LOOGYs
2 Veteran guys with (hopefully) well defined roles – which would be puppy kicking and game thread barkeep.
I think our lineup of Skip/Ludwick/Pujols/Ankiel/Glaus/Molina/Rasmus/Greene will be solid and ADAM, Carp, Lohse and the Colonel are an underrated and strong starting four. I gotta say, I am not down with the haters this offseason – I think we are well on our way back to the postseason.
The way I see this team there are 2 Big IFs,
Carpenter making 25 starts –
Skip becoming a competant infielder
If these two things can happen I think the cards are in the hunt for 1st place and MO makes a fairly big trade this summer giving up some package of OF/3B prospects excluding Rasmus and Wallace for SP. I could see us garnering a big name SP nearing the end of his contract from a struggling club, and giving up Freese/Duncan/Jay or something not distrupting current or future plans.

Speaking of optimism...
Imagine if Piniero could be the replacement level pitcher he was after we acquired him two years ago. In summary, OF-IF conversions go well- wildcard. +Clean bill of health- Division champs. +Piniero doing anything besides sucking- watch out D-Rays…
Even though we give him a bit of a hard time here
Piniero’s probably above-average as a 5th starter. As long as he’s our biggest problem and pitching at #5, we should be OK.
The problems will come if Carp/anybody else is injured and our 4th/5th combo is Piniero/Boggs or Thompson.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

the only concern i have is if we have enough innings in that group.
i hated seeing kyle mcclellan pitch three and two-thirds innings in a 14-5 game last year. don’t we need a thompson/boggs in there, so we don’t burn our bullpen out? especially with carp and pineiro not necessarily going deep into games, and having really torched our bullpen by august over the past couple years.
I think we carry 8 relievers out of camp.
Franklin
The beer man should be our long-man I think. He’s started before and shouldn’t be taking too many high-leverage innings in that group (unless he suppresses his walk-rate to 2007 levels again). He has the stamina to pitch multiple innings.
I’d give the low-leverage stuff to him and a combo of the lefties, whilst giving KMac the more high-leverage multi-inning duties.
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.

So apparently Dennys Reyes is actually my uncle Ralph.
(I’m a quarter Mexican. I’m quite the All-American Mutt actually. If you could pull all of my family members on both sides together for one photo it would look totally awesome.)
Anyway, what is it with Large Lefty Cardinals Relievers named King? Definitely looking forward to seeing Reyes pitch.
Although I think Reyes is a decent signing
I can’t help but feel that $3m for two years is a slight over-payment in this market. If Ohman/Biemel go for a similar value I think we’ve made a slight mistake, albeit one that should only cost us a mill or so.
I’m not sure in the current climate, with 2 comparably good lefties also out of work, that Dennys Reyes should be getting more than 1 mill per year.
Still, in WAR/$ terms, I think we’ll come out the winners on this one, and I’m glad we grabbed a lefty (although I wish we’d got one who could pitch to righties – all three guys are great LOOGYs but Reyes is the worst vs RHB).
Because chicks dig the intentional base on balls.
