2nd Annual VEB Day At The Ballpark
Hola Viva El Birdos,
The time has come to pick a weekend this year to put faces to screen names at thy olde haunting grounds of the home team nine. Those who partook in pleasantries and beers at the Broadway Oyster Bar during the summer of ought eight will hopefully confirm that this here blog is composed of mighty fine folks, most of whom could drink the rest of the internet under the proverbial table.
(As an aside, one of my favorite moments of last year's event was when a gentleman who described himself as a "VEB lurker" heard me talking about VEB and said "Oh yeah, isn't today supposed to be VEB day at the park?" I confirmed that it indeed was, and this whole table was full of anonymous comrades. To which he said, "Yeah, I really like that site. Except for Azz-Ruu-Vatahr. That guys a douche-bag.")
(I still hold out hope that was actually AZ, playing incognito.)
Anyhoo, enough with the meanderings, as it seems the new people to the site do not take kindly to verbose ramblings of nothingness, BLTs, or America; the time has come to pick a weekend for the 2nd Annual VEB Day At The Ballpark (which, in the spirit of ridiculous SABR acronyms, will henceforth be referred to as 2AVEBD@TB).
The leader in the clubhouse for 2AVEBD@TB (somehow leading before the first round even started...) is August the 15th. FlimtotheFlam beat the internets and figured out how to get free hotel rooms that night; the Cardinals will be taking on the Saint Diego Whale Vaginas that weekend, and I suspect there will be many a Padre fans at the game armed with pitchforks and sun tan oil as both David Freese and Khalil Greene are OPSing around 1.150 and Jim Edmonds and Mark Worrell are busy complementing themselves over appletinis at F15.
Other weekends which are intriguing for 2AVEBD@TB are:
June 6th v. the Rockies
June 27th v. the Twins
July 18th v. the D'Backs
August 29th v. the Nationals
But, since this is not a Blue Jays blog and we're all American here (I'm sure we're not, just go with it), lets do what our forefathers would have done and bomb Germany put it to a vote.
As always, the winner wins. A tie will be decided by a race around the world between everyone who reads this blog named Matt. There sure are a lot of those guys.
The poll will run until April 19th, upon which the winner shall be chosen and plans to be laid shall be laid. (That sounds weird.)
If participation is great enough, I'd be more than happy to look into getting some all-inclusive seats with others and really enjoy the eff out of the day.
And if the early leader of August 15th is declared champion, I would suggest looking into hotel rooms as the game will be started at... oh, you say it Mike Shannon:

"Gametime... 6:15!"
Thanks, Mike*.
And if you can't get a hotel room, you can crash at my place**.
Now get out there and lets make this the best, and least depressing, 2AVEBD@TB ever!
*My apologies for using the worst picture of Mike Shannon ever taken. Not only is he staring into my soul, but his face is melting. I'm going to have nightmares.
**Not you, though.

August 15!
Like I really care, I am gonna go to it irregardless regardless of the date. I was at the game last year, but I could not find the Blue Oyster Bar (now I know why). I am hoping for better luck this time.
Now I better go start training for that race around the world. I hope it isn’t a footrace though, because I have already signed up Jackie Chan and the corpse of Jack Elam to be my co-pilots.

well, technically it’s not mine, I’m borrowing it from somebody. Look out for Birds on the Matt, he could end up being a big sleeper pick.

That warms my circuits.
I wish I’d been there for that. This year though I should be a go.
(I’ll wind up disappointing. I’m much less robotic in person.)

I voted for June 27, because I think a game vs. the Twins could be very intriguing
However, I should be game for any weekend except August 29, as class will be back in session. Hopefully airfare won’t be ridonkulous this summer. Hopefully we’ll have a winner on the field.
For someone who’s never been to Missouri, I sure am skeptical of that hotel deal for 8/15…
If we pick July 18th, that could be the date we get Troy Glaus back, at which point we could call it “It’s Like We Added An Impact Bat At The Deadline” Day.

I voted for July 18
I like the “..Added an Impact Bat at the Deadline” Day idea.
(Actually, I was already planning on going that weekend. It’s the only weekend all summer that four schedules (mine, 2 daughter’s, and the Cards) mesh.
Don’t know if I could make it Aug. 15, but that’d be a good time too.

I voted August 15th...
It’s the only weekend I’d be able to make it this year. I’m in a wedding on June 6th, I get married on June 27th, riding Ragbrai on July 19th, so the 18th is out, and I’ve got college football plans on August 29th. Crazy busy summer ahead!!!
Also, if you signed up for Cardinals Nation, you can get two free tickets for the game on August 15th, as the club would be insane to block out any game with a team that’s bound to lose 100 games. I think the subscription is $20 or $30 for the season but you get discounts at the team store a couple of other places with it. I figure the two free tickets are worth around $30 anyway, so you might as well get the other amenities for free!

Private scrimmage
for my alma mater, Simpson College. I had a bunch of guys from my HS team play there in college, so we go down the weekend before the opener every year to watch the team play a full half as a scrimmage, then get wasted at Pete’s Pizza the rest of the afternoon. Good times!!!

Rockies!
If we choose the rockies date, there’s a 20% chance we will get to see Jason Marquis try to throw it by Albert…. that would be rofl-tastic

Amazingly, I've never found my self without conscious in my backyard.
But the couch on my sun porch was rated the St Louis Metro’s #1 napping spot in Midwest Nappers Monthly last September. That is, if such a fine publication existed.

July 18
is close to my birthday, so that was how I voted. As long as it’s not April, May, or September, I’ll be there. Crashing with Fritz or the vagrants downtown. Whichever will have me.

Bart: Wow. How many home runs you gonna hit with that thing?
Homer: Let's see... We play thirty games. Ten at-bats a game. Mm...three thousand.

More people
If we get more people than last year (about a dozen) then we will need to find a bigger place than the Broadway Oyster Bar. It was a good time and I hope more people can make it this year.

i should definitly make it if it's august 15th
and pretty much any other date other than the 29th works for me too. minor-friendly (or at least accompanying) plans would be appreciated.

sounds like that would require us to get a section at the ballpark
or just go to a restaurant?
by Cards Fan in Chitown on Mar 30, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
or as fritz mentioned
just ponying up if enough people sign on and getting an all-inclusive part of the ballpark.

Hey
You comin down for the game?
Also a friend of mine is a sales rep at the stadium, I can see if we can get a group rate or something if we have enough.
The all-inclusive areas are pretty nice, I do enjoy all the food and draft beer you can consume.

I will be coming down
I’ll need a place to stay though…. how much for the all-inclusive areas? since it will be aug. 15th I think I will have a lot of time to get the $ ready for that

The all-inclusive areas I think it really depends on which area you get

Sad day....
I voted July 18, simply because I’m gonna be there anyway, as my family does one big bash day at the ballpark and tries out one of the all inclusive areas. We’ve hit Legends (absolute money section), BoA (eh, decent, we were in the sun the whole game though) and this year we’re hitting the Champions Club.
Sadly, the day that’s winning, August 15, is also GenCon, which is a gaming thing that my brother goes to in Indianapolis and will be a fun weekend of brotherly bonding over beer and board games for me.
Oh well, I couldn’t have made June 6th if that was winning either (I never plan things out this far in advance, how is it that 40% of the dates are on the two weekends I actually DO have plans?)
Anyway, unless things drastically change, I’m out, which is too bad, because I’d love to stay anonymous the whole time and talk about how big of a douchebag azru is this year.
Just so I get it in anyway (and no, that wasn’t me last year, I think azru writes good stuff)
