this is an interesting test run for what our lineup might look like against lhp.

mather-ankiel-ludwick
barden-greene-ryan-craig [pujols]

if perez doesn’t look like he’s ready for opening day, I bet this is what we look like on opening day (subbing pujols for craig).

when I was that age

the only hair that would grow was on my chin. now at least I can grow sideburns and stache, but there are patches that won’t come in. maybe I should get some hairclub stuff for a huge beard

i’ve got so much hair it’s not even funny.

two months ago i stopped shaving & let the goatee grow into a full force beard. i’d look like the red version of those beards YP, AppleSauce & Frank wore during their commercial if i didn’t trim it 3 times a week.

My beard

I have a red beard (with brown, blonde & black hairs thrown in, just for fun), but I have a light brown / dirty blonde hairstyle. I’d love to have my hair match my beard, but i’m not going to try to color it myself or get it done elsewhere.

That said, the Cubs do deserve my pity, but never my support.

I'm kinda the same way

but a little less extreme. I’ve got dark brown hair, with lighter brown facial hair splotched by red patches all over. That is if I let it grow out, but I’ve been clean shaven for several months now.

that you watch one pod of games and if a 14 beats a 3 seed, a 13 beats a 4 or a 12 beats a 5, you will be hooked.

Motte's the front runner at this point?

From PD, Strauss:

Duncan confirmed Motte’s standing Wednesday, saying, “Anyone who’s been following what’s been going on would notice that among those receiving consideration (to close), Motte has been the most impressive. There’s a ways to go in camp. But that’s where it stands for me.”

I think I like this scenario: Motte closer, Franklin setup, and others for 6th/7th/8th & LOOGY duties. Hopefully, YP will not be too down on himself, since he has had physical conditions that’s been keeping him away.

4th game of the season

I’ve seen several articles placing Carp in the 4th spot to start the year. Sorry, no links.

by gdowdy3 on Mar 19, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

This makes sense when you look at the schedule.

The Cards have 14 games in a row before an off day. That would mean the 5th spots turn would come up on the off day, in this scenario it would be Piniero. You can skip Pineiro’s turn and have Waino pitch the next game on his regular 4 day rest. It would also put Carpenter and Waino back-to-back in the rotation from then on.

by MattK on Mar 19, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it depends on Carp's conditioning.

Didn’t he get skipped the the first time through the rotation? If he did, I could see them going Waino, Lohse, Wellemeyer, Piniero, Carp. Anybody know his pitch count compared to our other starters in the last turn through the rotation?

I am really excited to start watching baseball

Cardinal’s don’t seem to be getting a lot of love in the media which is fine by me. This team is just young and seems to have so much upside. I bet Ankiel just has a ridiculous good year to make him the premier CF free agent next year.

It is just so good to see the question marks doing good so far. Between Carpenter, Duncan, and K Greene it is all good.

We are a hard team to predict

We have so many guys moving around, young guys and weird careers that it makes them hard to predict with stuff like CHONE and PECOTA.

Why is everyone predicting the Reds to be the 2008 Rays? I look over their roster and don’t see any OBP guys and noticed Baker is managing them.

Right

I also totally agree with you actually. If Volquez continues, and Cueto improves, and Arroyo and Harang bounce back, etc etc. It could be a very good rotation, but it’s far from a sure thing. Meanwhile, Lincecum/Cain/Johnson look like a nice 1-3

The discussions on there

are sometimes worse than the P-D boards. I’ve never commented on them, just read. The first day of ST this year was obscured by several guys having an argument about whether or not you’re a true fan if you misspell a player’s name or type “Go Cards!” at the end of your post. Seriously, the first day of ST and these guys were bitching on and on about names. They know almost nothing of sabermetrics (minus those of us who are on this site and the Facebook site). It truly is a purgatory, I wouldn’t waste anytime on the Cards’ Facebook site.

Anybody watching the WBC?

Doofy color announcer guy just said something to the effect of “The last time joe west was behind the plate, he expanded the zone. He called the balls up in the zone strikes to righties and the balls low and away on lefties. And that was by design; he wanted players going up and swinging the bat, a more international kind of play”.

If I’m not misinterpreting this, and I don’t think I am, the last time joe west was behind the plate he deliberately called pitches strikes that weren’t strikes, and then bragged about it.
