CN Approval Ratings: John Rooney

One more week of the CN Approval Ratings, if you will indulge me.  Five more and then we'll call it a day, unless there are others you want to rate.

The next couple of days, we'll step back off the field and move into the broadcast booth.  Today, the radio side, as we look at Shannon's counterpart, John Rooney.

How do you feel about this most recent occupant of Jack Buck's seat?  Express your admiration or frustration in the form of a percentage between 0 and 100.  All results, as always, here.

I can recognize his voice anywhere, but he doesn’t stand out much.

I am a huge supporter of Rooney and take 1 point off only because hes teamed up with the dreadful, constantly dazed-and-confused Moon Man (I’m sorry, I just don’t see what people like about Shannon)

I think

alot of people like him for the reasons you’ve stated above. Not the “dreadful” part, but the “constantly dazed-and-confused” part. Having a slightly inebriated color man makes listening an adventure.

yes,

but when i am listening to baseball on the radio, I depend on the announcers to tell me what is going on, and it becomes increasingly frustrating to listen to the radio when Shannon has no idea what/who the hell he is talking about

by dunc4life on Mar 16, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

That's true I guess

I get to watch the games more often than I am restriceted to just hearing them, so I guess Shannon’s faults don’t really get to me that much.

I think Shannon could be better served as a TV annoncer.

He can go on with a story and make you miss an entire half inning of a game. If he was a TV broadcaster, where the description is less needed because you can see it, he could go on with his stories and entertain people while they can see all of the action.

He’s boring, but he’s not only capable but good at what he does—good voice, good patter, good understanding of his role as non-analyst.

as well.

He’s a nice counter to Shannon’s wackiness, and they work well together. Unfortunately he’s not very exciting and I LOATHE his home run call!!

Mostly because he is great at making sure I don’t miss all the actual baseball stuff when Shannon is going of on a tangent.

He knows what is going on around the league and because of that, it doesn’t matter that he has never actually played the game.

it is baseball after all. Who hasn’t played baseball?

I was very pleased when he came on board 3 years ago and my feelings on the matter haven’t changed. He speaks the language of the history of this franchise, he calls the action very well, and he provides a good foil for Shannon.

I take points off for being too much of a company man; I rarely hear him challenge a play or player’s effort, or the more curious decisons of the team or Tony. I’d like to hear the gloves come off once in-a-while.

he’s about on par with shannon for me. Better, clearer voice for baseball and is able to know everything from 1st inning to last inning unlike shannon in the late innings. I do enjoy shannon’s HR call over rooney’s though.

Get up baby, yeah….

ITS A GONE-ER!

i always thought it was gone-er (grammer wise)

but people like shannon because he’s been around forever and was a great duo with Buck back in the day.

I think Rooney’s very good and leaps and bounds superior to Wayne what’s his name who initially replaced Jack. I listen to the games around the leagues on satellite radio and am appalled by the dullness and lack of professionalism of most of the team’s announcers. The Pirate’s guys couldn’t get excited if Godzilla invaded the stadium. Santo is loveable but he and the other Cub’s guys pay little attention to the game. The guys who criticize Shannon and Rooney don’t know how good we’ve had it.
It goes without saying but Jack was the best.

Santo / Hughes

I know cub fans consider him ‘one of their own’ and tolerate his many many flaws, but from an outsider’s perspective the real star of that broadcast is Pat Hughes. Santo is bad, very bad. But despite Ron’s ineptness and general lack of knowledge, Pat some how makes it a listen-worthy broadcast. He carries Ron.

He’s not Jack Buck. But he sure as hell isn’t Wayne Hagin (nice guy, but just WAY too dry) either.

I'll give him a solid 75.

He’s pretty good, particularly when it comes to the whole issue of trying to describe actual baseball when Shannon wanders off into the wilderness. On the other hand, Rooney’s home run call is obnoxious, he’s a bit of a kiss ass, and seems pretty formulaic. (If he were on the general radio, he’d be the type to give you weather twice during any break between songs.)

So yeah, he’s not too bad, but I also don’t think he’s anything wonderful.

Personally, I’ve always kind of wished someone would throw a bunch of money at John Kelly (Mizzou announcer), to see if he would try baseball. No idea if he would have any idea what was going on, but what a voice.

Kelly is by far my favorite to listen to. When he broadcasts basketball or football it’s like Mozart or something. His voice is incredible and he is soooooo smooth.

I like his voice and it is recognizable. He works well with Mike and because of his presence we actually know what is happening during the game. Not a fan of his home run call either, but I like the uniform description, or as I call it, the fashion show, along with the line-ups at the top of each game. I like his post-game interviews with the players as well.

Any of you numerologists

or Kabbalah initiates know how to convert “meh” into a number. I guess that’s a 50. I hate his home run call and don’t really care that much for the rest of his game. If they were going to dump the eminently dumpable Wayne Hagin so quickly I wish they would have done better. I guess they had to get another Irishman to keep Shannon company.

I realize we could have it worse, but the guy is kind of excitable. He freaks out over the weirdest stuff. “here’s the pitch….IT’S IN THERE FOR A STRIKE! the count’s now 2-1”. But he is useful when Shannon is full on hammered and not even calling the game.
