CN Approval Ratings: Chris Duncan
For the weekend, a person sure to get plenty of responses. I'd say he's polarizing, but that would mean people were on the extremes on both sides.
You don't have to look far for reasons to downgrade, whether it's the defense or his general reputation for uncouthness (as symbolized by his famous WS trophy picture). He also, though, has a power lefty bat and has occasionally carried the team.
0? 100? In between? Cast your vote and remember the totals are up here.

+’s for the great couple of half seasons , but some serious -‘s for playing when he shouldn’t be. It is one thing to play through some soreness, but being so damn stubborn that you are playing when it is obviously hurting you and the team, not so good.
Also -‘s for that sometimes lead glove, but +’s for the comedy that ensues from those defensive gaffes.

1st Baseman Not Needed with Cards
Duncan’s a first baseman. I hear St. Louis already has somebody who can play a little bit at first. He’ll never be a good defensive outfielder, but he can be a mediocre outfielder with the glove. I think about other guys like John Gall and Josh Phelps that are no longer in the Cardinals organization. There were really first basemen stuck in the wrong organization.

Because that seems, to me at least, to be the only amount of production we have received from Chris thus far in his short career. He had a good half season in his call-up in 2006, and he was productitive for his healthy half of a season in 2007. I’m throwing ’08 out because he was obviously not healthy for the majority of the games he played and was still out there. I hope he can be at full strength all season long, because if he continues to hit like he has in ST he will put up some monster numbers.
Patiently awaiting the day Colby Rasmus does this: .275/.381/.551/.932, 29HR, in St. Louis...

He’s not my favorite kind of player as he has a roughly 2:1 strike out to walk ratio and he always looks horribly awkward while making plays in the outfield. However, this is more of a result of us trying to get his bat in our lineup. I think most would agree that hes a 1B or DH but obviously those options aren’t happening in STL. As much as I hate seeing him play, I think it would be silly to try to make an argument that he doesn’t provide value for our club. If he can return to form he will be a big piece of this team in 09… especially if Ludwick doesn’t start hitting the ball again.

A confession, if the Cardinals were an American League team, Chris would probably rise in stock about ten points. When you remove fielding from the equation, you have a relatively young, cost-affordable dude with potential for LOTS of power. Ah well…

Bad defense, great bat. He’d be a 3-4 win player if he was healthy. It’s very frustrating that he kept playing while hurt last year, though.

Decent bat (although he was terrible last year), and he’s an awful fielder. Dunc should strictly be a 1B.

This is starting to get scary
I wasn’t in on the voting for Tony but since then ,other than my 100 for Shannon, I’m getting way to close on these.
Here’s how off my picks have been this week.
Shannon: 8.52809%
Lohse: 2.87371429%
Ankiel: 1.03%
Albert: 0.10151594%
And with Dunc’ the Elder: 0.05473684%
Why the hell haven’t I been playing the lottery this week?
That last one’s going to be tough to top, but here goes nothing. For Dunc’ the Younger 72.38% with plenty of room for improvement.

I’m torn I love to watch Dunc play. Even the outfield adventures are exciting. He never gets cheated at the plate, works hard all game, chews tobacco, has guts, doesn’t shave and just looks like a guy I’d get along with. Problem is he’s just not a very valuable player, at least for us, and he may be in the way of some better ones if he stays the next couple of years. for the latter reasons I have to rate him lower than I want.

Is everyone above average? If 50 is average, than Chris Duncan getting 70’s and 80’s doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. Is he a perennial all-star? Not trying to be a hater but the scale is 0-100, not 50-100. I’ll give him a 48.

duncan plays well for what he is paid for. it’s not his fault he has to play outfield and bat against southpaws.

Hopefully this is the year Duncan finally stays healthy, reaches his potential and posts a 40HR season. The main problem I have with Duncan is not anything personally he’s doing but the fact that he’s blocking Rasmus. Still, the OF glut caused by Duncan is a good problem to have.
Lets start 2009 with Duncan in LF, Ankiel CF, Ludwick RF, and have Rasmus as a roving outfielder spelling each regular OF one out of every 4 days. Duncan can spell Pujols as needed at 1B and give Rasmus/Mather even more time in LF.

Staying health through a season and substandard awkward Defense bring down the rating. Max effort (even if it’s ugly) is there and brings up the rating somewhat.

I think it’s overdue that Chris gets traded. He really doesn’t have a spot on this team. In my opinion he should have been traded after his big breakout.
I get that he was trying to be funny, but I really think his picture with the trophy was pretty tasteless.

taken account for his lack of defense in the outfield and being injured the last year n a half, and that we have much better lefty hitting outfielders.
