CN Approval Ratings: Dave Duncan
Well, yesterday's was fun, wasn't it? Nice to have one of those celebratory ones with the greatest player in baseball.
I'm sure today's subject won't receive quite the same adulation. As with most people, there's pros and cons to Mr. Duncan. He's been almost Scotty-like in his ability to be a miracle worker, but he's also been known to focus on his way even if his way doesn't seem to work.
So what rating do you give the pitching coach?

p.s.
if anybody has the resources to superimpose Dunc’s face onto the emperor’s, that would be hilarious. I personally lack the skill and resources.

+ his ability to make something out of nothing
- looks so damned depressed all of the time
Only time I can recall seeing him show a graduated level of emotion (apart from winning the WS) was when Chris hit his first ML home run. Tony was giggling and Dave was fighting back tears. You could tell it was a special moment for Poppa Duncan.

Level of emotion
Dunc did call Lloyd McClendon (ex-Pirates manager, of the tossing first base fame) an idiot a while again. But I like the fact that LaDunc stay even keeled throughout games. Maybe that helps to keep the players focus on the game all the time.

I agree
he does seem to have a quiet confidence about himself and his pitchers.

I would be a lot more excited about Duncan if it weren’t for the tragic handling of Anthony Reyes… Yes, I appreciate how hes brought in and fixed guys like Wellemeyer. However, I don’t know how many re-tread experiments gone right it would take to make up for losing several years of a young, cost controlled ace. I also cant help but feel if he was given a chance to pitch in the rotation last year (which he should have) we might have made the playoffs… Instead, they stuck him in the bullpen for no real reason, then gave him to the Indians for nothing (we literally have nothing to show for it after the rule 5 draft).

Surely you jest.

Ace???
Was ARey even projected as an Ace when he was our #1 prospect? I am upset with the situation, but Reyes has been glorified into something that he never was IMO.
The thought that I have is that the season is over. And that everybody in the game; a fan, a coach, a player, a manager, front office, scouts...surrender. They say, "that's enough," especially after a game like this. But then Christmas comes, New Years, contracts are signed, trades are made, free agents are signed; and then baseball, like the rose beneath the April snow will force it's way to the front again. And we'll have the fever once more.

You are kidding me right?
Let’s be careful about throwing the word Ace around.
by VinegarBend on Mar 12, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
didn’t know it was such a sacred word… I’m entitled to my opinion. We all saw him throw a lot of innings. When his stuff was on, he threw as well as anyone. It started going down hill when Dunc and Tony tried to teach him how to pitch to contact. I guess time will tell how he develops for the indians.
I don’t feel I’m way off base here. However, I do acknowledge that my judgement is undoubtedly compromised my my memories of his near shutout against the sox, game one of the world series, and by his downward spiral in 2007. I also know that these remarks are off the cuff from me, as I’m not one who lives by statistical deffinitions of the word ace. But to me, thats how I saw him, a young pitcher with high upside. And I do feel, in a big way, that dunc and TLR lost the club alot of value with their handling of the situation

negatives for anthony reyes, and for apparent general aversion to power/strikeout pitchers, which i don’t understand at all. but the flip side is, he saves the club a significant amount of money by squeezing a lot of blood from a lot of very inexpensive turnips.

This is fun
My prediction for Albert was only off by .10151594%.
Dave Duncan is a tough one. I have been a little critical of his occasional poor use of words, but for me there’s no doubt he’s the best pitching coach in the game. He’s given the organization much more than just his experience, he’s also given us the fruit of his loins.

If you measure the man by his offspring it’s still a mixed bag. I guess, all in all, he’s done more for the franchise anyone expected when he came over with Tony. How about 84.16%

The Cardinals success in the TLR Era is due in large part to Dave Duncan. However, the guy did beg for Kip Wells, who stunk, and also bears a lot of the blame for why a top-tier prospect spent two years getting worse. So…85

I have no idea what he does but hell, would I like him to do it with me. That way I could, probably, someday, throw one of my 75 mph fastballs over the plate and not into the window of the neighbor’s car… Anyways, he turns mediocre pitchers into okay pitchers and takes good pitchers into Cy Young winners. Too lazy to do the research but I believe there are few pitchers that have actually come to St. Louis and be worse uder Dave…
Yadi swings and hits a high fly ball... Endy Chavez goes back, to the track, to the wall... ITS A GUNNER!! Yadi gives St. Louis the lead in the top of the ninth!

No question he’s an asset and I’m glad he’s our asset. I deduct points for stubbornness, for allowing TLR to overwork some pitchers and for probably not being the guy we want for pitching coach as we turn the staff over to young guys coming up.

Great game planner, but I think Marty Mason should get a fair shake of the credit, too.
Semi-related: I was thinking about this last night… I know they have brought in some clunkers (Ponson, Wells, etc) but who is the last pitcher the Tony/Duncan team has let walk or traded away that went on to be successful? Jose Rijo?

The A-rey-duncan situation is interesting to me… I’m not a stat guru, but I think it would be interesting to see if someone could do a WAR based value analysis of how many todd wellemeyers it would take to make up for what reyes could have been without all of the philosophical differences. It seems only fair if we want to evaluate the value dunc brings to the club.
If I had the know how, I would make a high level young player comparison, a medium level, and a low level young player and extrapolate that until reyes’ would-be free agency and calculate WAR over the time for each. Put in a pay scale comparable to wainright’s then calculate the value. Then extrapolate and calculate the value of the colonel. This may provide a somewhat objective view of the value dunc has for the team depending on how you view reyes and/or wellemeyer/ kip wells/ weaver etc…
Not trying to be play down duncs prowess as a pitching coach, but i think it might provide us with a new lens to view him through.

I really can’t see giving this guy any lower than a B. Of course he’s had his fair share of guys and situations that didn’t work out, but imho everyone gets a free pass or two, especially when they so consistently make pitchers better.
Like others mentioned, I really respect his in-game demeanor and attitude. I agree that it can only help guys maintain focus and perspective when they’re pitching, and even moreso when they’re pitching poorly.

Same as I gave LaRussa. Also, still wouldn’t trade him for anyone in baseball (pitching coaches, that is). But I wish he could see the light on strikeouts and high fastballs, every once in a while, for pitchers that actually do have the stuff.
Sign someone who can pitch, then let this team play.
