LOOGY Bonanza...
Which FA LOOGY would you most like to see inked during Spring Training. It appears that Beimel is about ready to sign with someone.
I nearly forgot that Dennys Reyes was still a FA. I hadn't seen his name being tossed about at all. I always kind of liked this guy, and he was tougher on lefties and had a lower WHIP than either Beimel or Ohman.
I have to make my thing 75 words so here I knock out a dozen or so words in one sentence.

I wouldn't mind
an Ohman or Beimel signing, but at this point I’d be okay with sticking with what we’ve got. LOOGY’s are quite possibly the players that have the least amount of influence for a team over the course of the season. (Is there somewhere I could find that information?) So, I won’t mind if we don’t spend an extra million on a LOOGY, but I could live with the signing too. I sort of indifferent to it at this point. I’d rather trade for a starter.
Patiently awaiting the day Colby Rasmus does this: .275/.381/.551/.932, 29HR, in St. Louis...

I kind of agree
My one caveat is this:
IF we think either Carp (due to injury) or Piniero (due to suckage) won’t make the starting 5 on opening day, AND K-Mac is converted to a starter (which I think isn’t a bad move) – I’d definitely look to sign Ohman (not any of the others) because he can pitch acceptably to righties. I think our pen definitely needs more depth then and we can’t afford to carry a weak lefty (if Ostlund/Ring/Manning all turn out to suck) with K-Mac (our best righty-at-pitching-to-lefties) out of the pen.
Otherwise, I think it’s fine to stick. I’m kind of excited as to what Ostlund can do – he’s got a really impressive minor league record and I think he could be a quality lefty set-up guy given a prevailing wind. Perhaps he’s just not had his extended MLB chance yet due to his various injuries and the fact scouts are prejudiced against him (a bit like RJ Swindels, who’s been dominant in the minors but never really given a chance in the majors because his fastball tops out at about 80mph).

I'm getting less and less worried
about Carp each day, but it’s still lingering in the back of my mind that he could go down at anytime. Piniero is due to have periods of suckage, but I think he will improve to an acceptable level of suckage for a 5th starter this season. Like I said, I won’t mind if they sign Ohman or Beimel, but I won’t feel we have lost out entirely if we don’t. I did a fanpost on this situation a while back and the one thing for sure is that the LOOGY’s we’ve got now are definitely an improvement from last year’s.

no love
for Ron “Walks Machine” Villone?
Would you believe he was more effective vs lefties last year than any of our current relievers (except Miller)?
Still sucks though…

I voted for Villone
just because I remembered he wasn’t afraid to kick some ass last season.
When exactly is that ’roid rage gonna wear off?****
****I kid (please don’t kick my ass Mr. Villone)
Also, he wasn’t that bad when used as a loogy.

Exactly
against lefties he was among the best in the league. Tony stretched him out and he was dreadful against righties.

Being fair to TLR
I think a lot of the spankings that Villone took were in long relief in “mop-up innings” where our starter got crushed early (I guess Pinata more often than not, but I remember him pitching in that 22-run Wellemeyer elbow game vs Philly). You could probably do a lot worse than Villone as a pure LOOGY; however, we’ve already got one of them (Miller) who’s probably better for the league minimum, so we might as well try to find a lefty for the other spot who can at least pitch a little against RHBs.
