The Rays have signed Jason Isringhausen to a minor league deal. This is the second signing of an unwanted Cardinals player by the Rays in the last 2 days. They had previously signed Adam Kennedy to a minor league deal of his own.
Like the Kennedy deal, this one looks like a real good move for the Rays. There bullpen was probably there biggest question mark going into the season, however with the signings of Joe Nelson, Brian Shouse and now Izzy, there bullpen appears to have exceptional depth.
To the Cardinals this looks like an opportunity lost. He was dreadfully awful last year and even worse in 06, however between those two 5-ish FIP years, he managed to put up a pretty solid 3.76 FIP and an even rosier 2.48 ERA. Also he only blew 2 saves the entire season in 34 chances. I'm not saying that we should have signed him to be the closer, however, a minor league deal certainly would have been a good move. If he showed that he was healthy and effective in ST than he would have been a nice addition to the roster. Anyway, he is gone now, and somewhere Tony La Russa is crying about the loss of a another potential proven closer.
It now seems like we are going to go into next season with Perez or Motte as the closer. My personal favorite would be Kinney, however he doesn't have closer experience and lacks the 95 mph fastball that seems almost necessary in a closer these days (Trevor Hoffman not withstanding). A couple of months ago, Harry Pavlidis did a pitch f/x analysis of three of the closer candidates (Carp was included, but he will almost definitely be a starter). He concluded that Motte would be the best choice for the closer. What do you guys think?
