Congrats, old man!
Today we think of Whitey as our “old-school” guy, but in the context of the 80s a lot of people take him for granted and forget how innovative he was. Took a team with almost no power (we remember Clark in particular as a masher, but his best season with us, ‘87, was largely due to his MASSIVE OBP) and won three pennants with walks, speed, effective substitution, and great defensive play. Whitey’s biggest big-ticket star was a middle infielder with a career OPS of .666.
Love you, Whitey!
+1
I always thought Whitey was a great manager and his most success with the Cardinals. St. Louis won 3 NLCS with Whitey, and Kansas City lost 3 ALCS with Herzog. George Hendrick was the only legitimate power hitter on the 1982 team. That didn’t mean that Hernandez and McGee didn’t have some pop, but Hendrick was clearly the power guy on that team. The Cards were able to beat a power-laden Brewers team in the World Series. I wonder what would have happened had Rollie Fingers been able to pitch for Milwaukee in that series. That would have been something to have had Sutter and Fingers pitch against each other in the Fall Classic.
