Anthony Reyes non-tendered by Cleveland?

Heh.

Did any of you think this would happen?

So, what happens to him now?

Wish we would have gotten Cliff Lee for him.  Funny how things work out.  He's only 3 years removed from his game one of the world series win against the Tigers.

It's depressing to think what might have been.  Wonder where he goes now.

Oh hey, this post still needs some more words for me to be able to post it.  I hope these words will cover what is necessary.

oh yeah, also...

not that anyone really cares too much, but anyone still feeling the sting of the Khalil Greene ordeal can feel slightly better knowing the Padres just non-tendered Mark Worrell.

in general

if you need to keep typing to fill up a fanpost, this should be a fanshot. That said, I would love to see the Cardinals get Reyes back, even if his shoulder’s shredded. I loved that guy.

.

I apologize Dan; I don’t really post here very often and I admit I never bothered to learn the difference between fanposts and fanshots.

And yeah, I wonder if anyone from the Cardinals brass is even remotely entertaining the thought of bringing back Reyes.

Actually out of all the non-tenders I’d really like to see us swipe Matt Capps as a setup guy for Franklin.

it's actually amazing

i miss parisi more than reyes, at this point. And I can’t figure out why, as Reyes was better in every way I can think of. Esp game 1 of 2006 WS, which Parisi (obviously) did not pitch.

it's Clydesdales vs Goats. Actually sums up Cards vs. Cubs quite nicely. -all4tookie

PROBABLY

because parisi went to the cubs

Actually

There are a few names that I would like to see the Cardinals make a play for.

Ryan Church. would not be a bad guy to have as a fourth outfielder. Holliday or not. He and Craig on the bench behind Holliday, Rasmus and Ludwick. If Ludwick is deamed to be too expensive in the near future he would not be a bad replacement in RF.

Kelly Johnson. If he could be had for a minor league contract and a ST invite DO IT! If he can hit trade Lugo. If not release him. I would expect he is offered a major league deal but I would make a call to his agent.

Chien-Ming Wang. I would be looking at his medical reports and asking him to come and throw for Dave Duncan. If does not hurt to take a look.

A.Reyes. Why not a minor league deal? Oh the Drama of Days Gone By.

yeah, I’m sure he’ll get a couple of million. He’s approaching average at 2B and might be average in a corner position or as a utility De-Rosa-type.

I agree about Wang, he could be a perfect low risk, high reward type. Capps makes a ton of sense as well.

Wang is a great pick-up if.......

he’s not hurt. He was terrible before surgery so it would have to be a real incentive-laden deal. If you think he’s good to go, he’s the kind of guy I’d like to get second year option on.

BTW, when I say terrible, he had to be the worst pitcher in the majors.

Just win

it's mainly annoying if something with little or no content (or just to say "hey, look at this")

knocks a post that someone’s spent ages writing that has, like, 300 comments off the bottom of the fanposts list. Which I think is fair enough.

If it contains nothing of your own work, you can’t fill the word quota without having to pad it out, or it’s just a link to a news story (or something funny, or whatever, on another site) it’s probably a fanshot. Otherwise, go for it…

if you click on new fanshot

and the tab says
    * Link
    * Quote
    * Image
    * Video
    * List
    * Chat

and your shit is one of those
THEN IT IS A FANSHOT.

also if the list function is too short, you can use the “link” default for easy html.

it’s not hard.

But I thought he was really, really good? That’s what this board had told me.

Matt Holliday. Nuff said.

and all these years later...

Reyes and Duncan are on the scrap heap – seeking out minor league deals. It seems we could’ve found some better players to bicker about. Ooooh…cheap shot.

Personally, I always enjoyed the long drawn out debates about these 2 guys. Sure it got old after a couple of years, but it was always fun, and I sincerely hope they are able to re-build their careers and fulfil their potential.

I actually agree. No idea what the residual fascination is with Reyes as a baseball player. He has his place in history, and he has his weird hat, and that’s about it.

agreed.

Never understood what all the Reyes angst was about. He was average-ish pitcher that had a couple of good games but turned out to not be all that good. big deal.

In fact, the only thing that really disturbs me about the whole Reyeys thing was that we gave up Perdomo in the Rule V draft. That guy could have been really useful.

There is a group that is always going to get excited about their org's best prospect

Just look at the Daric Barton rage following the Mulder trade. Today, we all know why we are unhappy with the Mulder trade. But then, all of the angst was daric barton, daric barton, daric barton.

Perdomo isn't that good.

I don’t see why there should be angst about giving him up for nothing, and not about giving up Reyes. Neither are particularly valuable. Perdomo was deeply mediocre as a mop-up guy for the Padres this year, at age 25. I’m not holding my breath for him to turn into anything useful.

vs. Matt Scherer?

I’ve seen Perdomo pitch and like his stuff. We gave him up for nothing unnecessarily, imo, and instead, we put matt scherer on the 40 man. That is perplexing to me. I don’t think Perdomo is going to be “particularly valuable” – after all, he is a RH middle reliever, but I think he’ll be useful.

by Willie McGee's Twin on Dec 16, 2009 11:08 AM EST up reply actions

yeah, probably

but there seemed a pretty good chance Reyes would be pretty useful too. I thought giving away perdomo for nothing was stupid. I thought giving away Reyes for nothing was stupid.

What I do not understand is the opinion that giving up Reyes for nothing was fine, but giving up Perdomo for nothing was stupid. Even if Reyes was only destined to be a #5 starter, they are generally more valuable than middle relievers.

Why not....

go after Garrett Atkins and Jason Bay?

Atkins made $7M last year with Colorado, and he struggled a bit last year, but I think he’d be a better starter than Freese. Atkins had a great year in 08.

Bay is willing to accept a 5 year deal from any team. Why don’t we offer him something like 5 years, $80M? We know that Holliday is going to decline the Cards contract offer, so we might as well go after Plan B.

Best moment I've ever seen at a Cards game in person
Looking forward to Cardinals baseball in 2010!

by zoomzoomj88 on Dec 13, 2009 10:53 AM EST reply actions

Isn't Bay a type A?

I think that should be factored in to the decision. Sure, we get a first rounder back depending on where Holliday signs, but I think we lose one with Bay. With teh Cards now seemingly more willing to pay for high-upside amateur talent (Shelby Miller, Wagner Mateo last year), I’d like to see what they’d do with 2 first rounders.

Also, I think Atkins is considered pretty poor with the glove. Ordinarily like bounce-back candidates, but I’d rather see what Freese can do.

by siddfynch on Dec 13, 2009 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

If we're talking about a $80M contract

I don’t give a damn about the draft pick, especially since we’d be getting a pick back from Holliday anyway.

Im still a fan of Jose Arredondo

He needs Tommy John surgery but I wouldn’t be adverse to signing him to a deal for 3 years and just stashing him for the first 18 months or so. Kinda like we did with Chris Carpenter.

by mob16151 on Dec 13, 2009 11:53 AM EST reply actions

guess that's fair enough if it's for the league minimum

we could even see if we can make years 2 and 3 somehow dependent on his ability to come back from the surgery. We’re basically paying $1.5m for him to (hopefully) pitch in 2011 and 2012.
