Ok let me try this again...
This was originally mean to be an open forum for people to state their opinions on some potential FA's that haven't gotten a lot of consideration from what I've seen.
What's the aversion to Jermaine Dye being a short-term, incentive-laden option should the primary options (Holliday, Bay) not pan out? Wasn't he generally pretty productive this year in a similar manner to Ludwick? I don't think he'd be any worse as our LF than Derosa from a production standpoint.
Also, let me know what you guys think about these players as potential fits for this team?
Josh Willingham- seems to me like an ideal fit with decent plate discipline and good power. I think of a higher end projection of what Allen Craig might one day be with Willingham.
Xavier Nady- Always seemed to do a number on the Cards. Plenty of pop when healthy.
Jermaine Dye- maybe on an incentive-laden deal could be useful on the lower end of the spectrum
Austin Kearns- would probably rather see Craig than Kearns.
Mike Cameron- don't think we'll be able to get him to play LF, but you never know.
Jose Contreras- he was throwing gas when the Cards saw him last year. He's kind of a head case, but to me he's a better option for a potential starter/setup guy than Smoltz
Kiko Calero- his numbers from last year were very encouraging. I had lost tabs on him out of spite for the Muldie trade. He's an intriguing option for a dependable strikeout setup guy.
What do you guys think??

Jermaine Dye sucks at defense
and he’s old enough that his offensive production will be in decline, so no thanks
Nady seems somewhat reasonable, Willingham moreso. Cameron would be very interesting, I’m not so sure he would not play left field considering his age (and Colby’s D)
everyone else on that list is pretty underwhelming imo. I want to sign Valverde for closer, Franklin is not going to be able to be that effective next season imo

Josh Willingham... still not in the van?

I still have a case of the what-if's about Willingham
What if we had gone after him last year instead of Holliday. We almost certainly would’ve still made the playoffs, and it’s not like we could’ve done any worse in them with him. Plus, we would’ve had a very good chance at signing him to contract and plugging the hole in left with a career .360 OBP for much less than Holliday. And, the real kick in the nuts…maybe we could have kept Wallace.

the thing is, I keep hearing his name
and then the chorus of “he cannot be dealt!”
i’m pretty sure the latter is true, but then I keep hearing his name…

I think Wallace alone would've got that deal done
and would’ve been a good trade. I’m sad we didn’t do that instead.

juan uribe
super-duper utility.

but super-duper old and not as good as we think
I’ve fooled myself into thinking he would be an okay stopgap from the waiver wire on more than one fantasy team over the years, and I usually regret it. You’d think I would learn.

was probably as good as dero this year
just a lot cheaper. and he’s not old – 31 I believe.
anyway, just a thought because i really don’t want to pay dero starter money, though i like him

We don't need DeRo or Uribe
we have a 3B. We have a 2B. We have a SS. We have two adequate bench players who can back up all three positions. Why waste money on Uribe? I don’t get your mancrush on him at all.
He’s ageing, he’s a terrible hitter, he doesn’t have a bat for LF (where we actually HAVE a hole) and he’ll cost money we could be using for something more productive. He’s Julio Lugo with more glove and less bat, and we already have Julio Lugo.

well, mancrush is a little strong
although i get a kick out of watching him hit.
but, he’s better than lugo at 2-3B and SS, which could make lugo a piece of a trade at some point. he’s ageing, obviously, but still 5 years younger than dero at likely half the price on a two-year deal. one negative is he doesn’t play OF, i suppose, but he doesn’t need to. and his OPS was better than ortiz in 09, IIRC, so i’d guess it was better than dero’s.
i’m not pushing for him but suggesting that he’s a better option than bringing back dero as a jack-of-all-trades.

I call fake birth certificate
He looks a hell of a lot older than 31. I truly thought he was 36. I guess he just looks and plays like he’s 36.
sorry, Juan : (

Wiki says yes.
How sad, his then-27-year-old wife died of a heart attack days after giving birth to their third child.

I like Kearns
In the barrel scraping, actually obtainable sense at least.
Might not hit for average, but he walks a lot, so minimizes the damage. Indeed, his OBP last year was better than any of the Cardinals outfielders other than Holiday.

Kearns
There is just something I don’t like about this guy. Yeah he is scrappy as all get out and would sure be a favorite to the “grit factor” fans but he just isn’t the guy we need if we expect to go to the playoffs. He will not put up the numbers to help our already sluggish offense. If we were the Reds, Pirates or Marlins…sure go get Kearns and give him a chance…..maybe it’s just me but I think the Cards could do better.
I’m not real high on Nady either because of injury concerns. I would take him over Kearns anyday but I just don’t think he would be an impact player that would get us to a division championship. He would be like the Tom Brunansky of this generation for those who remember Brunansky. A good solid player yes….a missing piece to get us back into the playoffs…not real sure….leaning on no.
Out of the choices you have I guess Cameron would be the best fit. Jermaine Dye screams American League DH so I don’t think he would be a fit either.
I still think Adam Dunn would be the best fit for our offense. Defense…no…but offense yes. I know he’s not a favorite around here but yeah I am still going to beat that drum. And yes his defense scares me as well…but we still need a big bat to hit behind Albert is Matty goes to the highest bidder.

Dunn isn't a free agent (the topic of the post) I add him as a trade possibility.
