Charles Cutler
I dont know if anyone has really noticed, or talked about this guy, but I live in the Qaud Cities and have seen him play on multiple occasions. The guy really impressed me. He has a strong acurate arm, he handled the pitching staff well, he walks more than he strikes out, and hes got decent pop. I can see him being a very valuble major league player. He has not gotten a lot of prospect status love around here so I thought I would bring him to our attention and get some opinons. I live in the QC and have gotten to see many players come through here (not to mention I got to see Shelby MIiller's first pro game in the Cardinals Oginization!!) and he was definetly one of the best (Rasmus and Garcia were the only ones who impressed me more).
Ohh and one last thing...He played for Lowell Highschool in California...their mascot? THE CARDINALS...If thats not a sign I don't know what is.

having never seen him
all i have is a general impression from mentions here and there on Future Redbirds. one reason he may not be high on the prospect radar is his age – i believe he was the same age as colby this year, which means you saw cheese at a much younger age, relatively, and garcia too. IIRC cutler came from college though, so that would make sense. i’d think if he could make it to AA next year and have some success then he’d be on the radar a bit.
Question: did you happen to see archimedes nieto pitch? he’s only 20 and i actually overheard snippets of a conversation in which he was discussed at an airport bar. don’t know what it was about, but what does he throw, hit on the gun, etc?
also, does vasquez have anything redeeming about his game? and didn’t stock get a few AB’s with the River Bandits – any impressions?
well, i doubt questions were what you were looking for, but oh well.

I like what I've heard
I thought the main knock on him was questionnable defense, along with his age, but I still think that’s really hard to quantify as a catcher. His bat definitely looks like it’s got a lot more upside than Pagnozzi. I guess he’s one of many guys in the #15-30 prospect range for the Cards who you could have near the top end of that list or near the bottom, depending on where your tastes lie.
Next year, I suspect, will be the big one for him – if he’s our starting AA catcher knocking on the door of AAA he’ll be firmly on the radar. If he’s still in high A ball and struggling, he’s probably going to be no more than a AAAA backup catcher, at best.

just some thoughts
felonious you might be right but i thought id give us something new to discuss besides few agency and trade. I’m not a scout and don’t claim to be so I could be way off on this guy but he was he did nothing but hit while he was there and hes still very young. Polished is one word that comes to mind describing him.
Cardball I did see nieto once but he got hit hard that day, I know hes got a power arm and the consensus is hes got good control for his age and power. I don’t think he hits higher than 96 on the gun though. I saw Stock too, He did not get a hit when I saw him but he caught someone stealing and he definetly has some pop as 2 of his 3 abs ended in warning track flyballs…I cant say vazquez ever stood out though

He looks like a carbon copy
of James Skelton who was a Rule V draftee last year.
Look at Skelton’s line from his second stint in AA — that doesn’t look to promising, and he’s been in the minors since he was 18.
Please consider any Hot Stove talk in the above comment is spoken under the assumption that the Cardinals are not signing Matt Holliday.

hopefully he dosent end up like that
but you never know hes only at AA . Cutler has a good baseball body (6-1 205lbs). I guess we will have to see how well he preforms at AA next year to really judge his staus as a prospect.

cutler, while he's a tremendous hitter, has yet to really distinguish himself from the other good-bat, poor-glove
catcher candidates within the org. the org shown no interest in bryan anderson whose defense is easily passable at least. i think cutler has to come up and really demonstrate that he is more defensively astute than he seems and that his bat will play at higher levels. all in all a tough order that others have failed at (see, hill, steven; cruz, tony). not sure if cutler has a fallback position on the diamond if he doesn’t meet the club’s high defensive standards.
