Around SBN: How A Letter From Tom Coughlin Helped One Fan's Recovery

Gotta be kidding Overflow

This sucks

[Azru Edit:]  That sound you hear is the air being blown out of St. Louis's lungs from that wrenching punch dealt to our collective midsection.  To say that was a rough game would be like losing a few limbs and calling it a flesh wound.  Unfortunately, we aren't in a Monty Python movie.  (I'd be an enchanter summoning fire without flint or tinder if we were in that movie.)

Try to stay sane.  We aren't out of it yet though things don't look good.  And please don't kill each other in the threads.  The last thing any of us wants to do is play the heavy after a game like that.

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

Let's be honest about this

Holliday was a hired gun. That means we have to live and die with every aberration from the guy. And tonight we died. If we’re going to get into petty arguments about things like whether we should be starting peoples arb clocks, what people’s projected WAR’s are, etc…..well then I think it is ok to get a little worked up when the guy who we gave our top prospect and 2 others for just dropped the deciding out in the playoffs off his nuts. Especially when we may only own his rights for 1 more game. I think people can get worked up for one night.

I blame Franklin more than Holliday.....

Sure, Holliday should have made that play, but errors happen. All Franklin had to do was get ONE of the next three batters out, a group that consisted of Belliard, Martin, and Lorretta, and he couldn’t do it. MF couldn’t throw strikes, unless he grooved them.

Giving Franklin the big extension probably removed any chance of Tony demoting him from Closer in favor of someone who hasn’t sucked the last month (say, Smoltz?)

by DiscoJer on Oct 8, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree with this.

he should’ve waited until the end of the season to give him the extension — on psychological grounds. Mo’s (perceived) expectations inadvertently lead to Franklin starting to skid on the mound.

but correct me if I’m wrong, the score was 1-0 there for a while, right? He looked pretty good in the 2nd inning….IMHO he broke even for the game.

see, the thing is, Franklin has accumulated those saves

on guile and Yadier Molina and the game plan. I’m betting he’ll be fine next season after a spring training ‘competing’ for the job again. Frankie’s country-simple. He’ll keep going out there and doin’ the same thing. and the defense is what makes it work.

Frankie getting spooked by the big contract and the regression means it’ll have to be Yadi and the game plan for a while. So if Holliday fucks up the game plan… well, yeah. Might as well dunk and flush.

My 2 cents

Yeah, I know. Some of you blame me for the loss. I wasn’t watching the game closely when I called the “winner” – I had been working on homework and mostly listening to the game.

This is one of the hardest losses I’ve ever felt. We were supposed to be the team to beat. We had been rejuvenated because of the trades for Holliday, Lugo and DeRosa, and instead of being where we should be (at least a 1-1 tie), we’re on the brink of elimination.

I’m leaving here tonight with one statement, related to golf, but possibly related to this: in 1999, the American Ryder Cup team was down 4 points with one day of matches remaining. In the presser the night before the Sunday matches, Ben Crenshaw said this: I have a good feeling about this (believing his team could come back). Sure enough, the Americans rallied and won the Ryder Cup in the most memorable fashion in history.

Now, I’m not saying it will happen, but I hope that the team comes together and rallies more than ever. I’d love to see the look on Dodger fans’ faces if we surprised them and won this series. I’m hoping that this team plays harder and stronger than ever. Who’s with me?

This one is definitely on Holliday,

but Mr. Loyalty strikes again. Franklin had the save, if not for the error, but to leave him in after that happening & giving up the tying hit to Belliard of all players, anyone would have been a better choice at that point. Franklin should have been taken out & its moves like that one that makes Tony a not very good on field manager. The “closer” role doesnt mean shit if the guy is struggling, its the playoffs & at some point you have to get outs even if it means hurting a guys feelings. Personally, it wouldnt have made it hurt any less, but I would much rather have lost that game with Smoltz trying to get the last out after the error, why is he on the postseason roster, if not for that situation. BTW, the Cards could learn something from watching the plate discipline that Blake showed in his AB in the 9th, but they wont, because they have Hal & Tony.

So if there's a save situation...

tomorrow, is it smoltz?

The beard is back!

by guayzimi on Oct 8, 2009 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I pray we don't have a save situation tomorrow

(since it’s the off day)

But seriously, it HAS to be someone other than Franklin.

Are you high???

We don’t play tomorrow… duh… but there’s not a chance in hell he goes away from Franklin…

Wainer should have been out in the 8th

He was gassed and not dealing like he had been. HAVE to trust the bullpen. Unfortunately we can’t.

why put all those pitchers on the postseason roster if you’re not going to use them? Waino was running on fumes, you’re going to sit him down and run him back out there one more time? Craziness. Franklin got the fly ball. Holliday just couldn’t catch it.

by nota bene on Oct 8, 2009 9:47 PM EDT up reply actions

oh yes, by all means, let's use those pitchers

I’m sick to my stomach, completely dejected. I guess the only positive is that sometimes the biggest joys can come out of apparent failures like this.

tough loss

Somehow this didn’t hurt as bad as some others. A one run game and Franklin in to close. My pessimism radar was running real hot. Yeah Franklin has lost his magic. I’m also wondering about Holliday. He was hot and now he’s NOT. It’s not just the blunder today. He doesn’t seem to be very enthusiastic. Has he already figured out it isn’t going to work for him in the Lou so he’s already looking ahead?

But basically this is the same team we have been watching for the last couple of weeks. Not exactly confidence building.

by spfldbird on Oct 8, 2009 9:47 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

Holliday's nerves are going to be our undoing

everyone’s a little shaky, but the new guys (well, we haven’t seen Smoltz) are performing better or up to expectations.

Holliday’s being a… what do they call it… a moron during inopportune moments.

I would much rather get blown out than watch a supposedly great defending LF blow a catch most of the people on this blog could probably make, but hey, Padilla and a struggling Billingsley don’t incite very much fear.
