Yes.

Yes.

Most people wait until the canes have died before lopping them off. I, however, take a more sabermetric approach and axe them once their VORP drops below about 2. There’s only so much space in the bed, and that’s just opportunity cost for a younger, more vigorous cane.

"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

The last 4 weeks for this team has been an utter disaster. A team CANNOT play like

they did the last 20 or so games & not expect this kind of thing to happen. Ive been harping on it for a long time, & the stat that TBS showed earlier of the Cards having basically the 2nd worst plate discipline in the NL is a telling tale & it finally caught up with them. The way that this team has played of late is, IMO, a matter of coaching, every facet of baseball, especially the little things like fundamentals has been horrible. This team deserved a swift kick in the ass about 2 weeks ago & it never seemed to happen. This team hasnt had any fire for a long time. BTW…keep hackin’, boys, keep hackin’. 1 inning left, maybe they can end it fittingly on 3 pitches.

From FJM, but vaguely appropriate.
True Yankee

A leader. A guy who’s full of intangible qualities that help him triumph – with class. Derek Jeter. A guy who has a certain look in his eye, like he knows what it means to don the pinstripes with some motherfletching pride. Bernie. Mantle. Joe D. Jeter. A guy who you want in the trenches with you. Mattingly. Joe Girardi. Derek. Jim Leyritz. Posada. Derek Jeter. A guy who stares adversity in the face and says, "I play for the Yankees, and that means something, and I am going to hit a HR off BK Kim in this World Series Game because I am a New York Yankee." Scott Brosius. Tino. Dave Justice. Derek Jeter. A winner. Derek Jeter.

Here are some people who are not True Yankees: Alex Rodriguez, Mike Mussina, Jason Giambi, Alfonso Soriano, Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright, and every other New York Yankee who has never been on a Yankees’ World Series winning team.

If you ever – ever – hear someone use the phrase "True Yankee," for any reason, I want you to find the nearest exit, form an orderly line, and leave the premises quickly and calmly. Seek shelter. Cover head. Report the incident to your nearest FJM representative immediately. You are in great danger, because the person you are talking to is an idiot.

the Cards play all year. Even worse than the lineups with Thurston, Ankiel and Duncan playing every day. Worse than the May that we had. Worse than it all.

And as I posted above….if anything else ..we kept the Cubs from going to the playoffs…so we can take that as a victory for us for 2009. They were the heavy favorites to win and we snatched it from them.

Here’s to next year. Will be fun to see what changes this team will have over the winter. It looks to be a busy one.

Goodbye 2009

Cards had a tough three games and the Dodgers played well. It’s Baseball. It happens. I, for one , salute these Redbirds. They gave me some thrills this year I’ll never forget, and I’ve been a fan since 1956. Go well into this dark night guys – see you in the Spring.
For all of you who can’t let it go. For all of you dumping on Ankiel, Holliday, Pineiro…et al. You all are big time fans…sleep well tonight.

by deweydell on Oct 10, 2009 9:18 PM EDT reply actions

It's been fun. It really has.

I’m still going to love them all winter and be excited about Spring. I’ll still get hopeful and I’ll still enjoy next season. The only thing is, it’s going to take a long time for me to process what the hell happened over the past few weeks.

It all started with the sweep against the Braves. Really, it started before then since they pulled many games they probably should not have won, but it really started with that sweep against the Braves where absolutely nothing went right.

I attributed the lackadaisical play in September to a lack of fire. Then that god-awful game against Milwaukee where I went out to the movies with the team up 6-0 and came home to a 12-6 loss happened and I knew something was up. I took it for what it was, tried to dismiss it as GOBs revenge but deep down inside, I knew something was wrong. I think we all did.

Quite frankly, this doesn’t shock me all that much. I need a few weeks off from thinking about the Cards. I need the Yankees to not win the World Series. Then I’ll recover and begin getting excited about next season. We all will.

It’s been a great run. It’s a shame the team had to crap the bed the last three weeks of the season. What are you going to do? Not every year can be 2004 or 2006.

You guys are awesome. Keep it real.

Let's see now...

I want Holliday gone (way too much money to have Manny Lite roaming LF), Ankiel (for fuck’s sake, I’ll swing and miss at every pitch in the strike zone for the league goddamn minimum), and DEFINITELY La Russa gone (his head games were good for an advantage a while back, but the league’s caught up to him and stupid shit like playing the aforementioned Ankiel over Rasmus, costing Rasmus a shot at the ROY…. well, I think it’s time TLR retired.)

So the decade begins with a dramatic meltdown by Rick Ankiel, the pitcher, and ends with a pathetic wimper by Rick Ankiel, the hitter. That is symmetry of the Cosmos. But nonetheless, the "00"’s were successful and fun all things considered.

Just to add to what gdm has said...

I was lurking for a year on VEB before I began sporadically commenting last season and it was thanks to lboros and others that I learnt a lot about analysing performances, but you’ve added a very personal and emotive touch to this site.

So yes, great job. Now somebody will come along and call me lame for thinking that I’m part of a ‘community’.

I make the joke a lot about you guys being my internet friends, but talking on here about baseball has made the great wins that much better and the bad losses sting a little less. I would like to thank everyone on here for giving me a great diversion from the things that actually matter in life and hope to do it all again next year. Being a Cardinals fan in DC, there’s not a lot of relating going on around me, so it’s been great to read all these stories and see everyone’s thoughts. Great job by the managers/editors and I look forward to continuing to follow along with everyone.

Back to the hot stove threads!

In an effort to try and move on (which won’t be possible the next few days, let’s see what we need for the offseason perhaps.

#4,#5 starter (Depends where Lohse and Smoltz pitch, Boggs and Hawksworth as well)
3B (Craig, Dero, Freese, maybe even Glaus or outside the organization like Figgins)
LF (Holliday? Maybe outside the organization, Ankiel is also possible :)
Bullpen? (It looked really shaky this year, but maybe Motte, McClellan, Boggs, and the hawk will pitch better. Lefty side is solid)
Extend Pujols, TLR, Duncan hopefully
Solve the closer situation- Can Franklin handle it? I certainly hope so.

Thoughts?

I really don't think

TLR will let his run here end like this. The DD meme will be intriguing.

i'd love me some Figgins (see above)

but i assume that won’t happen so i say give Freese the 3b job. De Rosa coming off a wrist surgery seems like a bad idea to me. Freese is cheap and played well when he got the call.

Not sure on the 4 starter. I’d let Boggs & Garcia duke it out for the 5th starter.

2.444 is ridiculous

...

4, 5 starter: Boggs will be one of them, free agent as the other
3B: Not DeRo or Glaus. Probably Freese, Craig, or FA
LF: Not Holliday or Ank. Both will be gone. Possibly an FA, most likely someone w/in org.
Pen: Who knows.
Extensions: Pujols is top priority. TLR may be back. I think DD will leave b/c of the Chris situation, childish as it seems.
Closer – NO FRANKLIN! Hopefully a FA, but probably within organization

I'm ready to move on...

the second Ankiel takes his ridiculous hacks…

Starters: 1-3 set, 4 has to be Garcia unless he melts in ST, and 5 should be a scrap between Hawksworth, Boggs, maybe McClellen. Sign Smoltz or another high upside guy (maybe Webb?) for insurance.

Third: Let DeRo go unless he accepts arb or signs a 2 year deal. Let Freese and Craig fight it out. No need for Figgins, unless the market falls apart for some strange reason

LF: Gotta go all-in for Holliday. I just don’t see what Plan B could be

Other: Pray TLR and DD come back. Let ’em do their thing with the pen. Hope for the best. Sometimes you get 2003 and 2009; sometimes you get 2004-2005

Jaime Garcia

I think if he prooves himself in ST, he could be a fifth starter.

im already penciling him in

and eduardo sanchez as the surprise guy to make the team out of ST

I'm like a polygon, I'm edgy.

Whats everyone so worked up about?

The team just got eliminated from playing baseball for the rest of the year, but they’ll turn it around.
