VEB Awards for the 2009 season

As the (fantastic) 2009 regular season comes to an end, I thought it would be a good idea to roll out our postseason awards.  Per VEP's suggestions, we will house them here in the fanposts section rather than under fanshots.    We will also follow vivaelpujols suggestion and combine voting for Cy Young, MVP, and Rookie of the year all in this one space.   Of course, we will limit all voting to the league that requires all players to bring both their bats and their gloves.  We'll leave those heathens on the other side to the fate they deserve, and let the baseball writers have the final word with them.  The fine upstanding citizens in the NL deserve better, and this is where we come in.  I'm sure, in due time, the lucky recipients of our awards will feel a sense of honor and accomplishment that the BBWAA simply cannot provide....at least not as long as the likes of Tom Haudricourt are there!

Star-divide

We'll mirror the system the writers use in deciding winners, however.  Keep me honest with this, but I believe Cy Young and ROY voters rank their top 3 choices with a value of 5,3,1 points.  MVP voters rank their top 10 choices with values at 14,9,8,7....

We'll also want to try to keep the formats similar to each other in our votes as well.  Put your rankings at the top of your post, and any support behind it below your ranks just to make sure they are read.  If possible, put all 3 awards on the same post.  I guess if you want to sit out a category for some reason just give the ones you want to vote on, but it will be much easier to tabulate if you keep it all comprehensive on one post.

I had my thoughts on the Cy Young pretty well established, but have not thought out the MVP (other than the obvious winner - to everyone but Tom Haudricourt) in much great detail yet....so I am going to sit on the sidelines here for a day or so until I get a chance to dig in.

Remember to try to vote with your head rather than your heart, and we'll see who the VEB community decides to bestow these most treasured honors to.

The Cy Young might be just a little bit biased on this blog :)

NL Cy Young:
Chris Carpenter
Tim Lincecum
Adam Wainwright

NL Rookie of the Year:
J.A. Happ
Tommy Hanson
Chris Coghlan

MVP:
Take a guess who’s number 1 :)
Hanley Ramirez
Prince Fielder
Ryan Howard
Chase Utley
Chris Carpenter
Matt Kemp
Ryan Braun
Tim Lincecum
Troy Tulowitzki

And just because….
Comeback Player of the Year- Carpenter

Executive- Mozeliak made a lot of moves and looks like a genius, as opposed to the guy running SF

Manager-Jim Tracy is almost as certain as Pujols being MVP.

Anybody...

that doesn’t put Lincecum #1 is hopelessly biased. The only NL starter in the last 10 years to have a lower FIP than Lincecum 2009 is Randy Johnson. Not only is he better than anyone else this year, he’s better than almost all of the Cy Young winners in recent memory

wainwright leads in SNLVAR.

different metrics, different results.

by nycbirdo on Oct 2, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only reason

Lincecum leads in FIP is because of strikeouts. I really don’t like how heavily strikeouts are valued in FIP. Look at this example:

(Lincecum) 10.42 K/9 2.72 BB/9 3.84 K/BB .40 HR/9 2.34 FIP
(Greinke) 9.55 K/9 1.97 BB/9 4.84 K/BB .44 HR/9 2.31 FIP

The HR rates are practically identical as well as the FIPs, but the first pitcher has a significantly higher walk rate and a slightly higher strikeout rate. Why are the FIP numbers the same? Honestly, I’d take the 4.84 K/BB over the 3.84 K/BB with an extra strikeout every game or two any day. FIP is good for some things, but it is not a perfect statistic, and I’m tired of everyone acting like it is.

As far as the Cy Young voting goes, it’s a toss up. The way I see it, this award should be based on results. I don’t see why ERA has become such a frowned upon statistic around here. ERA is not predictive whatsoever, and is dependent on the defense. However, pitchers pitch to a defense! If Wainwright and Carpenter didn’t think that Brendan Ryan would gobble up every single GB, I bet they’d come out with a different gameplan. When we are looking at a season in retrospect to hand out an award, I think it’s fair to look at ERA because it is the simplest meause of how sucessful a pitcher was over the course of a season. We don’t say “player X doesn’t deserve the MVP because he had a high BABIP,” so I don’t think we should do the same for pitchers because they have a high FIP-ERA differential.

Once you see that all three (Lincecum, Carpenter, and Wainwright) have comparable ERAs, I’d look at innings. That, to me, knocks Carpenter out of the running, despite the fact that I’d put him out there over Lincecum or Wainwright in a must win game.

Once it’s down to those two, it’s pretty subjective for me. We all look at it through the perspective of Cardinal fans so our opinions are skewed. My thought is that I’d rather have Wainwright on the mound in game 7 than Lincecum. When you combine that with the fact that they have gotten similar results this year, I have to give the award to Wainwright.

The Godfather himself has decided to grace us with his presence. This is his damn house. He sleeps 20 feet away.

by thegodfather on Oct 2, 2009 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

I fail to see why so many are stumbling over themselves to crown Lincecum while berating others who don’t agree.

It’s a subjective fucking award. Where in the voting bylaws for the Cy Young does it say that the award must go to the lowest FiPer or pitcher with the highest WAR?

I don’t have to vote for Miss Texas just because she’s 36-24-36. I can vote for Miss Iowa just because I think she’s got a cute face, even if I think she’ll get fat after popping out two kids in a couple of years.

My votes (off the top of my head)

So I’ve probably left someone really obvious off the MVP voting.

ROY:
1) Happ
2) Hanson
3) McGehee

Cy Young:
1) Lincecum
2) Wainwright
3) Javier Vasquez

MVP:
1) Pujols
…..
………
…………
(daylight)
2) Utley
3) Ramirez
4) Zimmerman
5) Lincecum
6) Fielder
7) Waino
8) A Gonzalez
9) Braun
10) Carp

Comeback:
Carpenter

Manager:
Tracy

Executive:
Amaro, much as it pains me to say it. The Ibanez deal (and not picking up Pat the Bat again) looks very nice in retrospect, and the haul given up to get Cliff Lee (after they didn’t pony up a LOT more for the same amount of Roy Halladay) was pretty weak. A couple of decent FAT additions, too. I also think Neal Huntington has done a reasonable job restocking the Pirates, despite a lack of tradeable commodities (though he should’ve gotten more for McLouth. Obviously, the Sanchez-for-Alderson move was a massive coup, and I think the trade with the Nats was a good one, as was dumping Jack Wilson and Ian Snell for something useful. Ned Colletti’s had a decent year too, but I really can’t give it to him.

NL AWARDS

MVP: Albert Pujols (by a landslide)

CY YOUNG: Adam Wainwright

Manager: Jim Tracy

Rookie of the Year: J.A. Happ

Comeback player of the year: Chris Carpenter (By a landslide)

Executive: John Mozeliak. I admit I was tough on him over the winter…but he has shown me he has what it takes to an effective GM. Well deserved for Mo.

IMO, Lincecum is more important to the Giants than Waino is to us.

If we didn’t have Wainwright, we’d still have Carp. If the Giants didn’t have Lincecum, they’d be in a whole lot of trouble because Matt Cain isn’t quite ready to be the ace of a staff. Without Tim, the Giants wouldn’t have been in the playoff hunt nearly as long. Same could be said if we didn’t have WW, but like I said, having Carp would make up for it moreso than Cain would for SF.

I gave Waino the Cy Young partly because I was trying to vote with the thought process of a BBWAA voter. I think the fact that Waino has more wins and is on a playoff team will sway the voters in his favor. Especially if he wins tonite. Plus I’m biased.

No longer patiently awaiting. Raz has arrived.

So is this #10, for a nice round number?

MVP:
1. Pujols
2. H. Ramirez
3. Utley
4. P, Sandoval
5. Fielder
6. Kemp
7. Tulowitzki (with a “z”)
8. Carp
9. Lincecum
10. Braun

CY:
1. Carp
2. Lincecum
3. Waino (I would not object to any ordering of these three)

ROY:
1. Happ
2. Hanson
3. Garrett Jones (I was tempted to insert a sympathy vote for Hawksworth here, but let’s be realistic…)

MOY: TLR by the narrowest of margins over Tracy. We can nit-pick Tony’s individual decisions, but in a big-picture sense, he’s had a brilliant year. Either of these guys would be deserving winners.

Executive: Mo. Yes, Amaro had a fine year. Mo had an INCREDIBLE year.

Comeback: Carp.
