Two-Star Prospects
11. Niko Vasquez, SS
There is some diversity between the various list that have been released thus far, Goldsteins curveball could be Reifer at number 6 and the absense of David Freese.
Under consideration for the third spot on our list will be Chris Perez and jason Motte, who conveniently have been recently analyzed over at Beyond the Box Score.
Another prospect who will be getting some looks is Daryl Jones, who is somewhat overlooked with our outfield depth. If it were a more glaring position of need, would we be more inclined to include him within the top tier of prospects? Some have called him the best athlete in the system.
Here are the next ten candidates. If there's someone else you think deserves it, say so in the comments, otherwise, vote for who you think is number 3. Also, feel free to make a pitch for who you voted for, and maybe spark some discussion about the future of our beloved team in the off season. Without further ado, the nominees for the Cardinals #3 prospect:

I went with Garcia
I have decided to go against most of my current comments and I voted for Jaime. I just think if you take away this lost season that he still has a shot at being a great starting pitcher for several years. I like what I saw before the injury in his brief time with the Cards, I like his minor league numbers, and I love that curve.

I voted for Perez.
I think his potential as a closer is worth more than a #3 starter. I’m sure someone will quote WARs to prove me wrong, as I’m not too good at that, yet. Just my opinion.

I hear ya
Often times I rate prospects based on their talent level versus their major league positional counterparts, or in other words I compare closer prospects to closers and catching prospects to catchers. I rarely take the time to decipher whether a closer will be more or less valuable than a catcher, even though I know there is disparity. Perhaps if we could take mle’s and apply something like war to that number then we could compare things like likelihood of reaching the majors or potential for improvement for a less arbitray ranking system.
I only am who I am because I was born that way. I have a gift and I'm trying to not be selfish about it, but to use it, OK? Jealousy will get you nowhere!

There about even
I’m going to use 2008 K-rod as Perez ceiling as a closer, which is pretty good. According to Statcorner, he was a 1.4 WAR player.
I’m going to use 2008 Kyle Lohse as the definition of a #3 starter. According to Statcorner, he was a 1.5 WAR player.

I go with Motte
Great fastball, great command. If he is able to get any kind of decent offspead pitch than he will be one of the best relievers in the game. I’m rating him more for his immediate impact potential because I think he will be great next year.

Jess Todd
I don’t consider Motte or Perez prospects

But they are on the list
And as such, I rank Perez well ahead of Todd. Get back with me in a year when both relievers are both in the majors, and by then (hopefully) Todd will be a top-three guy.

Voted for Perez
Sucks making the obvious choice, but still.

from what I heard on the Baseball Prospectus radio interview with Jeff Luhnow
Reifer sounds really exciting. if he pitches for us one day, I will defifnitely be buying one of those jerseys if possible.

Wow...
…Motte appears to be the choice. How about that. I love the guy’s upper-90’s cheese, but Perez’s secondary offering is a more advanced pitch than Motte’s at this point. On the other hand, Motte’s FB command appears to be superior at this point in time.
I went with Perez personally just b/c I think he’s more advanced…but I’m not going to get in a huff over Motte going #3. Both have to be members of the 2009 Cardinals’ bullpen.

In The Cards

Motte is good
But he’s not ready. People are voting based on that massive fastball he throws. But without a curve, he will have limited utility.
Now if he picks up a curve with some degree of command… he would be approaching scary good.

I think there are plenty of good pitchers – especially relievers – without curveballs.

I smell some serious BS..
as in “ballot stuffing”. I wouldn’t throw a fit if Motte was ranked 3rd, but by such a landslide?! Something just doesn’t seem right about Motte sitting at 157 votes to 33 for perez and 19 for B.A. and 16 for D.J. However, I do love me a 100 mph heater.

yeah
perez and motte should be tied… they both have great strengths and weaknesses
by Cards Fan in Chitown on Jan 10, 2009 4:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
..or
at least close to tied, i mean this is just a remarkable landslide victory for Motte….I haven’t see motte ranked anything higher than 7th in the organization anywhere else. I’m a huge fan, but I don’t think he’s even in my top 5

does Applesauce have multiple VEB accounts
and really, really wants to be #3?
He isn’t in my top 5 either. There must be a helluva lot of voters who like him that never comment.

3 and 2
Are the numbers for Perez. He is 3 years younger and has twice as many pitches. Aside from those 2 numbers, Motte has Perez beat. That said, Perez is my #3 and Motte will be #4.
