Attn: 1946 World Series Special Tonight.
hey guys... just noticed that there's a special on the 1946 Cards v. Red Sox World Series on MLB Network tonight at 10:30 EST (9:30 CST). short notice, but it should be interesting. Musial against Teddy Ballgame, if nothing else.
i know this isn't an appropriate fanpost, so i'll delete it after the program ends. or a mod can delete it now and put a notice on the front page or something. just wanted people to see it.

I think this is an appropriate FanPost
I guess I should’ve mentioned that in the guideline post but I had a lot of praise for Hardcore’s “game thread” for Game 5 of the 1956 Series. If there are no comments, we can always delete it later but I think it would be fun, particularly during the offseason, for Cards’ fans to gather and discuss one of these historic games. HL mentioned that the 2006 NLCS game 7 will be replayed sometime next week on MLB. Maybe it should be deleted the next day or so, but it provides a great forum for this sort of discussion.

So, Saturday?
If I think about it, I’ll mention it in Saturday’s main thread and put up a FanPost to be used as a game thread. This is great but maybe the 2006 game will generate more interest and activity.

This isn't a 'special' to be exact
it is just the 1946 World Series film that has been on DVD in the past. Still good on you for the heads up.
As for the 2006 NLCS Game 7 thread, I plan on putting it up Friday and hopefully chuck or someone will lock it until mid-day Saturday.

so do you guys get this for free
or did you pay for it? I just called Time Warner, and they said it’s $189/year(!)
That’s pretty excessive, imho. I may at some point decide to buy it, but not unless they really offer some unique stuff on there.
still cannot accept that Rachael was Chani.

If you are payin $189 a year
that means they are making you buy either a) MLB Extra Innings or b) the sports tier on your digital cable service if you don’t already have it.
I get it for free because I get the digital sport tier.

yeah that sounds like Extra Innings. although the early fee should be around $169
mine was & is $159 with DTV. which hasn’t worked since the season ended which is why i haven’t seen MLB TV yet. i really should get that looked at. i have no idea why it’s not working.

DirecTV
That’s right re DirecTV — and it’s included in the basic package (as I understand it, DirecTV negotiated this as a free offering for its basic packaging in connection with its Extra Innings bid).
In St. Louis, I watched it at my in-laws’ over the holidays on Charter digital (Channel 429) — although they have a pretty robust package, so not sure if it’s included as a matter of course.

i don't know guys, it's still not working
i messed around with it earlier & i have no idea what’s wrong. i’m going to have to call a pro & get him out here to figure out what’s wrong. i only watch it for Cardinal games, so that’s why i’ve only turned it on once or twice since the season ended.

hmmm
that says I should have it. i do get the “sports tier”. but all I get is the usual “contact time warner for ordering information” message, like I get for the 87 skinimax channels I didn’t pay for.
Guess I’ll call them again and try to get clarification. May just not be turned on yet in my area.

Comcast added it free
IIRC, I think MLB’s marketing plan was different than the NFL’s where MLB is offering the channel at a pretty low cost to cable providers. The NFL was free to start but now Comcast requires you to buy the sports tier to get it.

Comcast, DirectTV, Time Warner, and Cox
are all minority owners of the MLB Network. That is probably part of the reason that those of us without any of those are getting screwed with our pants on. This might just be the the final straw for my cable provider.

i have TIme Warner also...
… but i get the sports tier (almost entirely for FSC). good thing is i get it in HD.
i think the sports tier is around $10/month, tho, or even less. not sure why they’d quote $190.

I've been watching it ...
….a lot over the past few days – Cards get the short shrift yet again, Yanks and Sawks get the coverage. The only time I’ve seen the Cards mentioned is during the oft-repeated ‘04 WS where we get swept, and even then we’re barely mentioned. I also just watched the Ken Burns Baseball documentary 1950-1969 – Stan Musial and the Cards are not mentioned once. I know the Cards didn’t do much in the 50’s, but you’d think Stan the Man would get mentioned, at least once.

I think Musial's in the 40s in the Burns doc
Burns did do a section on Musial. But the 50s was devoted to NYC (as it probably should have been, with NY teams accounting for what, 14 of the 20 pennants?). I’m pretty sure the Musial part was in the 40s.
People bitch about Burns paying too much attention to NY and Boston, but that’s a great, great documentary.

The 40's...
…was mainly Ted Williams, although Musial did get mentioned. I for one think he should have gotten at least as much attention as Williams. And int eh 50’s episode other players were mentioned who were not in NY, but Musial was not among them. I’m not saying the Burns doc isn’t good, it is, but I would have liked a bit moore coverage of those classic Cardinals players and teams. We have, after all, produced moore World Championships than any team not called the Yankees, and the moost in the NL. We have also produced arguably almoost as good an all-time player team as any in New York or Boston. Our history and tradition ranks right up there with any team’s, so why not expect a bigger share of the coverage?

Got the DVD,
don’t get MLB Channel… but you’ll see a few clips of Stan The Man “taking the extra base” during the Series. I was stunned at just how fast Musial was! Enos Slaughter gets most of the recognition for his baserunning (and rightly so), but Musial was a “burner”, too!

Watched the '46 Series film on the MLB channel
Eh. Pretty low quality, I thought. You’d think with baseball being the #1 sport in the country at the time, and it being the World Series, and this being the only way 99.99% of the people living at the time would be able to see it, they’d do a better job technically of capturing it. It looked like most of the time they only had one camera filming the action. Bad angles, too distant, didn’t deal with sun/shadow at all, and lots of time they just lost the ball and the fielder playing it.
Absolutely no mention by the narrator of Pesky holding the ball, and watching it, the hesitation was very, very slight, if any. Maybe he’s gotten a bad rap all these years.

Enos Slaughter always attributed
his Mad Dash to Leon Culberson’s poor throwing arm, not Pesky’s perceived hesitation on the relay. Slaughter maintained, as I recall from interviews and written accounts, that 3rd base coach Mike Gonzales had held him up in an earlier series game when he felt he could have scored on Culberson. He then received Gonzales’ blessing to run whenever he thought he could for the rest of the series. Dom DiMaggio, the strong armed regular Sox CF, had left game 7 due to a base running injury, and was replaced by Culberson – duly noted by Slaughter.
I’ve watched the ‘46 film many times (I own it on DVD), and it’s hard to lay the blame at Pesky’s feet. As noted by Perry, he barely hesitates, and it may not have made a difference anyway. I’ve heard Pesky say in interviews that the reason for his pausing was that the afternoon shadow of the grandstand had crossed the infield, making it difficult to pick up the catcher after turning to receive the throw from the sunlit OF. The film bears this out. Nevertheless, the “hesitation” must have been something the writers blew out of proportion, and it gained momentum over the years, particularly as more decades passed without a BoSox championship. Red Sox fans, like Cub fans, famously love to have scapegoats on which to blame their team’s futility.
"The Detroit Tigers' biggest obstacle to a championship will be keeping a straight face. The Tigers in three. (OK, make it four.)"
