ESPN cancers Sunday Night Baseball

I am flabbergasted. It seems that ESPN, in all their infinite wisdom, has decided that we baseball fans should suffer more:

Phillips Joins Sunday Night Baseball Crew

Just when I thought Morgan was the worst thing they could do to a baseball broadcast, they had to go and do this. Seriously, are they trying to kill Sunday Night Baseball or what? It seems like yesterday they were telling me Joe was no longer on the Sunday night broadcast. Lies, Lies! What a 3 man booth!

Also, why is this the first I am hearing of this? Bad VEB'ers, Bad! I count on you guys for this type of information!*

* I missed it, didn't I?

Phillips isn't great

but he doesn’t really bother me. If the Mets are involved, he obviously goes into homer-mode, but otherwise, he’s at least better than Joe Morgan was.

I think Steve Phillips at least can evaluate talent marginally well, and his stupid quote per inning (SQPI) rate is in much better shape than Joe Morgan, who was up there with McCarver.

by mtalken on Jan 24, 2009 4:13 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Phillips can evaluate talent marginally well?

I think you are forgetting about trading Kazmir for Victor Zambrano. I don’t think he was doing any evaluating there.

by Jumsy on Jan 25, 2009 7:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He also drafted David Wright

and signed Jose Reyes as an amateur, and his teams made the playoffs nearly every single year he was the GM in New York. I’m not saying he’s a great analyst, but evaluating a guy based on one bad trade is bad news.

He didn't make that trade

Jim Duquette was the guy who made the Zambrano for Kazmir deal.

As fourstick notes, Phillips brought aboard Reyes, Wright, and Milledge. Milledge has yet to pan out, but the talent is still there, and Wright and Reyes are awesome.

He also assembled a team that played in the World Series and almost played in another one.

I typically disregard Phillips' commentary

Can’t remember which game it was exactly. But late last season he was calling a Phillies game and was campaigning Ryan Howard for MVP because he was quote “a run-producing machine”

The other commentators asked him what he thought of Pujols, and he just sort of brushed the Mang aside. He tried to sound smart by saying “If Pujols was on the Phillies instead of Howard would he really make them a better team?” The other two commentators both exclaimed “YES!” Phillips shut up after that.

Sorry, I’m completely blank on which game it was exactly. That event just sticks out to me…………

Or Pujols for Howard would have been done already.

Pujols for

Utley, Hamels, and Howard would be pretty even? Maybe toss in Lidge for us as well, although we’d never be able to pitch him against Albert….

Get ready for a full season of...

Joe: “Well, if you’ll watch here, Jon, you’ll see that the second baseman will stand close enough to second base that he can still cover it in the event of a ground ball to short.”

Steve: “Great point, Joe. Much like the shortstop will do in the event of a ground ball to second.”

yes, but what really kills me is when that's followed by

1 or 2 replays during which Morgan repeats the EXACT same thing.

Don’t have much of a problem with the other guys, but add me to the legion that can’t stand Joe.

Did FJM succeed?

I’m excited there will be no more Joe Morgan…I think his work is mostly vague and uninformed comments with really really bad ones thrown in here and there.

Phillips is just kind of weird. He’s not very good, but that’s still an improvement over Morgan. Besides, who in the business is good?

for us baseball fans. i for one applaud the WWL’s decision & in the not too distant future look forward to no longer turning to them for my baseball fix.

mlb has the same problem as nfl

Each has limited the amount of audience it can have. The nfl network through greed, thinks there’s is a premium channel which the cable systems make ppl pay more for. Mlb tv has done the same thing by getting in the sack with Direct tv, its not on dish network and a lot of cable networks. Not exactly a greed thing but, just dumb. When the different league’s networks get petty about stuff, is why the WWL will always be here

when the Yanks and Sox aren’t playing each other on a Sunday night. Happens about twice a year.

I'll still watch because . . .

I love Jon Miller. One of the best announcers in baseball in my opinion. Especially if you get the chance to watch him do the local SF games on MLB.tv, the guy is really funny.

On with the (good) youth movement!

by aet15 on Jan 24, 2009 7:22 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

ugh. Miller annoys me

I used to like him, but his tendency to overpronounce names is really annoying. Especially when he starts applying phonetic rules incorrectly and saying the names wrong, which he does probably at least 25% of the time.

If he didn’t do that and weren’t paired with Joe Morgan, I’d probably really like Miller, because I think he seems very knowledgeable and he has a very good voice for broadcasting.

by mtalken on Jan 24, 2009 7:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I like Miller

I figure some of the stuff he does is to try to distract us from Morgan. I appreciate the effort. I just wonder how much this is going to make him slide. I wouldn’t be surprised if he walked out of the booth at some point this season.

by mattyfrommo on Jan 24, 2009 8:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

strongly agree

I have long held the hope that, privately, Jon Miller hates Joe Morgan’s guts. And there have been enough subtle hints over the years to keep my hope alive. There are times that Miller cuts Morgan up in such a subtle way that the arrogant and insipid Morgan doesn’t even realize it.
Their old married couple routine is very old and annoying, but I think some of that is Miller trying to keep his sanity.
Bottom line on Phillips is… he can’t hurt anything… the SNB broadcast is already terribly broken. Also, silver lining for Phillips haters: maybe this will be a singular assignment, keeping him away from the other games during the week.

He pronounces OPS “OPPS.” Like, Hopps, without the H. It’s annoying. Why should I listen to someone who doesn’t seem to have a basic clue about what he’s saying?

excellent verb choice

sports commentary is one of those weird jobs where someone can be really, objectively terrible at their job, and then be called in to comment on whether other people are good at it. Steve Phillips isn’t qualified to judge my Baseball Mogul game.

You can also be a coach apparently. Some of the coaches/managers in professional sports were awful players, and in a way they comment on their players. Not that many other jobs fall into that category though.

Morgan

The always awesome Joe Posnansky (I’ve had other people interested in kidnapping Joe and having him write for the P-D…can we get some kind of petition going or something?) has spent the last few years researching a book about the Big Red Machine, and he’s come up with an interesting take on Morgan. Not so much to excuse the man’s broadcasting ineptitude, maybe just more to explain it. He’s put together a few blog posts on the matter, so I’m tacking on the links:

  • June 25th, 2008: He’s talking about how Morgan may have developed this hatred/disdain/willful ignorance about stats, that it was an outgrowth of his underappreciation (that’s not a word, but I’m using it anyway) by writers who seemed to think that Morgan was a naughty little baseball player for not caring about his holy batting average.
  • November 15th, 2007: This one is actually about bad MVP choices, but it still works. In one of his “footnotes,” Posnansky notes a quote from Morgan’s book. I’ll be damned if it doesn’t say the following—
bq. "The two most overrated stats in baseball are batting average and earned run average. I measure a player by his run production. Slugging percentage and on-base percentage actually tell you more about run production than batting average."

Literally shattered my worldview. I think because of this I may wander the globe in search of meaning and purpose, perhaps becoming a sadhu or something.

amazing

and I wish that some of that would carry over to his broadcasts. I know I have heard him dismiss OBP on more than one occasion. Actually my main problem with him, and most other broadcasters, is the dismissiveness of other’s opinions. They don’t need to be perfect, I would settle for just less arrogance.

I prefer Casper and Brenly to Dan and Al.

And being a Cardinals fan, that’s sad . . . right? Well, read on . . . .

I hate to say it, but they’re a hell of a lot better. Anytime the Cards are playing the Cubs and the game JUST HAPPENS TO BE on WGN SUPERSTATION (sensationalism is fake) . . . I switch to those guys. I’d rather switch to the Cubs announcers bitching about their own team (where bitching should be warranted) rather than my own team bitching about ours (where a title as recent as three seasons ago warrants no bitching for another two years, in my opinion).

Now, when Joe Buck joined Al . . . like hell if I was switching the station. But that’s another story for another time.
