Brian Roberts
Hello Cardinals fans. I am an Orioles fan wondering if you think Brian Roberts to the Cardinals would be a good fit.
It seeems that you don't have anybody to play 2B or SS. I personaly think Roberts would be a good fit for the Cardinals. He has only one year left on his contract, he might extend with the Cardinals as he has chances to win with them.
Does anybody know what could be a good package for Roberts? The Orioles need pitching and infield prospects. Maybe you can include Baltimore's closer George Sherrill in a deal.
If there is another post like this already, I would be glad to see it. :)

Good fit for Cardinals, not so much for Orioles
Welcome to the Cardinals message board. I’m sure several folks will weigh in with opinions but here are my quick two-cents…
Yes, Brian Roberts would be desirable. But there are several obstacles to this ever happening. Specifically:
- We have a 2B (Kennedy) that would be hard to move, and who is already owed a few million
- We don’t really have a wealth of infielders (exception of 3B) and Cardinal pitching is limited
- Mr. Coangelos likes Roberts a lot, I believe, and would be reluctant to part with him
Does that mean a deal is impossible? No. But it would likely require some very creative moves, such as a third party getting involved. Out of curiosity, was there a Cardinal player that you believed would fit well in Baltimore?

Is Melvin Mora going to be ready next year?
We have a few 3rd Base prospects.
Perhaps: Brian Roberts and George Sherrill
For: Skip Schumaker, Mitchell Boggs, Adam Kennedy, Allen Craig, and Fernando Salas.

Yeah
George Sherril isn’t that good either, anyone of our young relievers would be better than him.

Welcome
Roberts has been bandied about quite a bit here actually. The Cards MIF situation is not quite as bleak as you make it seem: Adam Kennedy doesn’t hit much, but he was one of the best defensive 2nd basemen in the NL last year. John Mozeliak acquired Khalil Greene from San Diego for a relatively inconsequential reliever and a Player-To-Be-Named-Later. Both have expiring contracts after the season, so there is actually a good deal of flexibility. Now, Roberts would certainly be an upgrade over Kennedy, but considering his contract is up after this season it would probably make more sense for Mozeliak to sign Roberts as a free agent than to deal any of the team’s few high-quality prospects (which include Colby Rasmus, Brett Wallace, Jess Todd, Chris Perez and Jason Motte).
Now, if the O’s GM was willing to deal Roberts for a package including Kennedy, David Freese (a good 3rd baseman who is kind of old for AAA, but can hit well), and/or Mitchell Boggs/Clayton Mortensen (still developing AAA pitchers who lack good secondary offerings) than that is a different situation. However I don’t think that would be a good package on your end.

If we have no infield
Why would we want to deal infield prospects to the Orioles?

Roberts Perfect Fit for Cards
I am one of those who believes that Roberts would be a very good fit for the Cards. The Cards need an impact leadoff hitter and Roberts is the best available in a position that the Cards need to upgrade. In spite of what is being publicized, I do not believe that the Cards will start the season with Kennedy at second base.
With that being said I don’t think that it is very probable that a trade between the two is going to happen. Neither organization seems motivated to do much of anything and both organizations seem to overvalue their players. Clearly, the O’s have been asking a lot in return for Roberts who is one year away from free agency.
The Cards have extra outfielders and need to move Kennedy. I would offer Ankiel and Kennedy who are also one year away from FA for Roberts. I believe that Ankiel and Kennedy would improve the O’s and Roberts would improve the Cards because the Cards have Rasmus to take over in CF. Cards might have a chance to sign Roberts long-term and O’s might have a chance to sign Ankiel long-term and if that did not happen I believe that each team would be better off for next year. I think it would be a fair deal for both teams.

the problem is the O's don't need Ankiel.
they are set in the OF for now. Jones has turned into a heck of a big league player for them.

I would love to get Roberts....
but the main problem is that the O’s primarily need strong SP and MIF prospects, and we don’t really have those, at least not ones close enough to impact next year. The O’s would probably want a Major League ready SP, and Mitchell Boggs won’t cut it.
by Czechguardsman on Jan 3, 2009 1:12 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
bit too early
to say that “jones has turned”… he may be “turning”, but he’s far from complete. he was only .018 OPS points better offensively last year than Adam kennedy, and that was with a BABIP of .333. With an IFFB rate of close to 15 percent, and a BB/PA rate of ~5 percent, if he doesn’t develop power soon he’ll be the next corey patterson.
Poor kid really, really needed a year or two more in the minors, imho, but he got rushed up because he was playing for the two worst-run franchises in MLB.
still cannot accept that Rachael was Chani.

by thunder!!
Kennedy and Ankiel for Roberts is the best idea I’ve heard this year.
The O’s could always make another trade from OF surplus, if that really is the case, (even moving Ankiel a second time) and they would have the dependable (cough) Kennedy to man second base for at least a year.
The disgruntlement among Cards’ fans for ditching Rick would be softened by the fact that we got rid of AK in the process. And, if Roberts plays up to form, and if Rasmus (who would stick with the big club with Ankiel gone) plays well… by May 1 all the complaints will be muted
Getting another second baseman besides Kennedy may not be our biggest need {a 4th starter and a closer is } but if Roberts were that guy, he solves other problems too, namely lead-off and some speed at the top of the order.
Surely Roberts at lead-off makes the line-up better than Kennedy hitting 9th does.

Looks like Roberts,
could be heading to the white sox for Gavin Floyd according to mlbtraderumors.com. I think this would be a steal for the O’s , but of course they are unwilling to do this deal straight up.
I hate winter!!!!

Yeah, MacPhail wants the best deal he can find.
I hope the Orioles do that trade. We could get an established MLB starter for Roberts.
The Orioles need pitchers.

Not really
Floyd wasn’t good before this year and his FIP was 4.77 or about as good as Edwin Jackson.

I'm a St. Louisan living in
Baltimore, and I’ve been on the Roberts bandwagon for some time now. But I’ll agree with the other posters that I’m not optimistic he’ll wear the BOB. And of course, if he leaves the O’s I lose one more reason to enjoy watching the O’s!

Love Roberts
My trade idea would be:
Roberts for:
Jess Todd (Good pitching prospect), Adam Kennedy (Good Def 2B), Allen Craig (Could play 2B), and pick an upside play (T. Greene, F. Salas, M. McCormick).
I think Craig “could” play 2B, Todd “could” be a No. 3, McCormick “could” be outstanding… Again, this is basically a role of the dice for one year of Roberts…

that's a lot to give up
for one year of Roberts

probably what it would take
likely still not enough to land Roberts

Agree
If it were enough I would pull the trigger, but Todd being the centerpiece might not be enough pitching to get the deal done and the Cards just don’t have another SP that is attractive enough to be the centerpiece in a deal like this (I don’t think Mr. Boggs is highly valued outside of the KLAW and obviously Jaime is hurt – and I wouldn’t deal him personally)

if craig could play 2B
that would be fantastic. Forget trading for Brian Roberts, just promote Craig.
still cannot accept that Rachael was Chani.

Tango believes that 2B and 3B are largely interchangable.
Not sure I agree, but food for though.

Agree.
I am not as high on Roberts as everyone else. I would never want to pay him when he hit free agency. 4/60? ish. or 5/60. Either way…crazy.
by njnick on Jan 4, 2009 1:10 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It wouldn't be a bad idea to give him a deal like that
We have a lot of money coming off the books after next year and we are flushed with minor league talent to take over those positions. We would have a lot to spend in the offseason, probably enough for Roberts and a good starter to replace piniero.

Not me - Mr. Goold
DG said that Craig could be a sleeper for 2B. I agree that IF he could play 2B why trade for Roberts, but my thought is that is a major wild card and the Cardinals could use Brian Roberts right now. Basically you trade a Craig who “could” play 2B for a Top 5-8 2B that “can” play 2B. Of course you only get one year, but that is the cost of doing business IMHO.
