Interviews with Motte, Mather, Barton, and Wallace

The Cardinals Caravan came to SIU Carbondale before the SIU vs Bradley mens basketball game on Sunday.  Jason Motte, Joe Mather, Brian Barton, and Brett Wallace were all in attendance.

I got a chance to get 1 on 1 interviews with each of these guys, so I thought I'd share them here with the VEB community.

Click on the links below to listen to the interviews.

First up was Jason Motte, who talked moving from catcher to pitcher, hitting 100mph on the gun, having faith in his slider, and the chance to pitch in the 9th inning this season.

Joe Mather- talked about his "Joey Bombs" nickname, and responds to the talk about potentially playing second base.

Brian Barton talks about the Rule 5 draft, and how his knee held up after his first big league season

Brett Wallace- Talks about staying at 3rd base, and what his playing weight might be in upcoming seasons.

All four guys were cool to talk to, and enjoyed watching the end of the Arizona Cardinals game after the interviews were finished.  Mather is a big gridbirds fan since he grew up in Pheonix.  Wallace is also a Cardinals fan after going to Arizona St.

holy cow

motte wore #5 in the minors? The legend grows…

though he seems a bit spastic.

Great work!

still cannot accept that Rachael was Chani.

I suspect he's dyslexic

Seemed to have difficulty with word retrieval. Plus, he sounded nervous which would only make it worse. But, if he is, that’s a good thing. Dyslexics are know to be strong in other areas such as creativity or athletic ability.

And I agree, great work, Don!

FWIW

there’s 2 minutes of dead air after the mather interview. Boo for the dead air, but the information from the interview is better than anything the dopes from the p-d gave us.

(but once they stop chatting, don’t wait for something to happen ;)

And I love the walrus’ weight discussion. “whatever weight i show up at, is what i show up at”. Git’r’dun, willy.

Yeah, I should have done a little more editing

but it was like 2am by the time I finished uploading them… so I called it a night…

But thanks for the comments!

He seemed a little annoyed about that question.

And he probably is, but guess what….get over it and I’m sure it’s less of an issue to him than it is for everyone else.

Nice observaton

I wondered if people would pick up on that from hearing the audio

From seeing his body language, Wallace sure didn’t like the question about his playing weight.

However, it IS an important question because if he gets too heavy he’ll have to play 1st base, which won’t work for the Cardinals.

From all observations they have him doing ok until his arb years and worried about him filling out from there. If you look at the pictures of him in winter league vs him in college he’s already shredded some weight.

I’d be a little upset as well, as he gets a lot of knocks about it.

To be fair, everything I’ve read says he should be ok with range and hands, but it’s his arm strength that doesn’t wow you (considering his body size).

“From all observations”

Opinions on Wallace, even in the early years, vary from analyst to analyst.

the one time I saw him play

he had quick enough reflexes to stick at the hot corner

Those were a great listen, salukihoops, thanks a lot

Motte did sound pretty high-energy. Maybe he just really enjoys talking baseball. I tend to start sounding that way (talking quickly, stuttering on words,…) when I’m talking about something I’m very interested in.

I liked hearing Motte talk about

he has another pitch, he just didn’t need to use it, and still stay humble by saying he might not even make the major league team

Great job

Thanks for the interviews and the time you put into it. I enjoyed them all. I especially liked listening to Crab Man. I was curious to hear what a rocket scientist sounded like in a casual interview and he came across being very personable. I hope none of them ever develop an attitude if they get big.

4:50

I think the picture during the Motte interview at the 4:50 mark is actually Chris Perez.

Great work!

The questions were respectful but not all softballs. Very nicely done. Wallace better get used to the weight questions. They will continue until he pares even more pounds off his frame.

I don't understand why it is an issue

If the kid can flat out rake, I don’t see why the hell it matters what the size of his trunk is. It looks like a genetic thing, Wallace isn’t exactly a tub of lard.

Tony Gwynn is in the Hall of Fame with a bod worse than Walrus's

so you see, looks can be deceiving.

good point

having a toned frame doesn’t mean you can hit, and vice versa

but

gwynn wasnt a slugging hitter, he was just a singles-doubles hitter that hardly ever struck out

i don't get it

shouldn’t a thick lower body be preferred on a slugger over a singles/doubles hitter?

by mattyfrommo on Jan 27, 2009 9:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It's not like he's playing center and leading off

He’ll be in the middle of the order as run producer. If he is able to play a capable 3rd base with that body, than no one should be complaining.

Motivation

I would think that Wallace has a pretty strong source of motivation to work on his physique. He has to see that teams don’t trade top prospects very often. He can be in the big leagues in 2010 as a starting 3B if he improves defense and range.

Sign someone who can pitch, then let this team play.

many many thanks, Don

I not only enjoyed your work here, but it gave me greater ‘feel’ for four guys that in in the Cardinals’ near future.
I appreciate your time and effort.
I liked Mather the best, but they were all good
