Braves get Lowe

http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2009/01/13/braves_lowe.html

Speculation is that its for 4 year/$60 mil. I'm bummed the Cards missed out on him, especially after the Mets set the price so low (no pun intended), but I don't think we could have or I would have wanted them to drop $60 mil right now, even on a starter as good as Lowe. Between Lohse, Lowe, and Carpenter, I just think that would have been too much money tied up in aging pitchers. C'est la vie. At least he didn't go to the Brewers.

That leaves Pettitte and Sheets as the two remaining free agents that I'd like to sign. From the sounds of it, and unfortunately for him, it sounds like Sheets will be laughably cheap, and I'm not sure what's going on with Pettitte and the Yanks, but I'm not sure why we aren't in on it. Definitely worth a look I think.

Maybe Mo's focusing on trading an outfielder(s) for a starter instead of messing with free agents.

On another note, how good do the Braves look now? Lowe, Vazquez, Kawakami (no idea how good he'll be), Jurrjens, Campillo/Hudson after the break/Tommy Hanson, plus an offense of Kotchmann, Chipper Jones, McCann, and Kelly Johnson. The defense is pretty weak, but if Francoeur bounces back, this is a dangerous team.

The Braves were desperate

I know Lowe is a good pitcher. I know he has stayed healthy. But I think they will come to regret that fourth year on his contract. That’s a LOT of money tied up in a guy who will be nearly forty by the time he finishes up…

sinker ballers tend to age well

they usually are move effective when they throw softer thus more movement.

That line-up doesn't scare me at all

Chipper and McCann are great. Kotchman hits like a middle infielder, though. Escobar and Kelly Johnson are better than what we have, but their outfield production is next to none. I’ve never been a believer of Francoeur, and who else is going to do damage? Gregor Blanco?

Its time to start thinking creatively

Talk the Yankees into signing Sheets, soaking up the loss of that draft pick, and in return picking up Sheets at a reasonable cost. Imagine this scenario.

-Yankees sign Sheets, two years at $7M per, and a club-optional third year
-Cardinals trade with Yankees, sending them a minor leaguer (Anderson perhaps) to make up for the draft pick
-Brewers get stuck with a (4th?) round pick

Cards win. Sheets wins. Yanks win. Brewers are screwed. Good plan?

And you're likely not even losing the draft pick

It would take a lot for him to lose type B status.

4/60

is too close to his original ridiculous asking price, imo.

Space.

It's a problem we face.

So we never go anywhere.

We just stay in one place.

by hazel on Jan 13, 2009 1:22 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Did we ever answer that question?

When does a Type A free agent lose his type A status, therefore not costing a team to sign him for the draft pick?

The Braves won't make the playoffs

They’ll be “dark-horse” candidates again and “legitimate contenders” but I’m just not buying it. They had Chipper and Teixiera batting back-to-back last year, with Smoltz and Hudson, and they still fell so far out by the deadline they dealt Tex. Bobby Cox is a heckuva manager when he has Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and John Smoltz, all in their prime…

Not quite

Smoltz pitched 28 innings last year. Hudson pitched 142. Hudson will come back mid season but now they also have Lowe and Kawakami to bolster their rotation.

Wild Card

It’ll be interesting to see if the NL East clubs beat each other up all season and if that allows an NL Central club to sneak into the Wild Card. Or, will two NL East clubs make the postseason.

Loopy Looper isn't anywhere yet is he?

I know he might be a Milwaukee drunkard soon, but it may be time to put up an offer for him. If not, pleese, can we get Benwetthe Sheets????

I am hyperventilating!!!!! MO, save us!!!!!

Looper will be around forever

But we should gobble up Sheets before someone else deos.

Someone the other day stated

that if we didn’t get Lowe, it’s because Mo (or DeWitt) was either cheap or stupid. Losing Lowe to the Braves or anyone else b/c we didn’t make him a 4 year/$60 M offer doesn’t make us either cheap or stupid. That’s a good deal for Lowe and, probably, a decent deal for the Braves but I suppose some Cards’ fans are going to beat DeWitt and Mo up over their supposed cheapness again, it just doesn’t hold water.

very very true

the guy was asking for 5/95 a few months ago & ended up getting 4/60. good for him, bad for the ATL. it would have been horrible for the Cardinals. anyone who thinks the Cards were cheap or stupid for not trying to match or outbid the Braves on this one has no idea what they are talking about.

Michael Young

The cards should get Michael Young out of Texas he stated he would agree to move to second base for a team. Trade Kennedy and and outfielder to Texas who lost Milton Bradley and there you go.

by ghostofjimlindeman on Jan 13, 2009 10:03 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I hope there is a beer wagon full of cash

headed to StL in that deal.

Kennedy career OPS: .717
Young career road OPS: .727

Kennedy career UZR/150 at 2B: 9.9
Young career UZR/150 at 2B/SS: -3.3/-12

Plus Young’s below average UZR/150 number at 2B was compiled when he was a much younger and better player. He wouldn’t be much, if any, of an upgrade over AK if the money was even. His value is almost entirely derived from his gaudy numbers in Arlington (best hitters’ park in baseball in 2008) of: .322/.369/.480/.850

He has declined with the bat the last two year also

in 07 he was above average offensively with a .346 wOBA. However that was significantly down from his previous 3 year average. In 08 he only mustered a .331 wOBA which was actually about -10 runs offensively. If you consider the fact that he is already 32 and apparently in a sharp decline and that he is such a bad fielder, he would probably only be worth 1.5 WAR next year would continue to decline. That would actually be less than what Kennedy projects to have and it would cost us a TON of money and some good prospects to get him.

by vivaelpujols on Jan 14, 2009 1:37 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

How does that improve the team?

He’s a declining hitter and a poor SS. Would he be better at second? Perhaps…let’s take a look.

From a off-the-top-of-the-head POV, he’s probably only going to get worse offensively because his numbers are plummeting like a stone. Maybe an AL-NL switch would give him a boost, but maybe not. Kennedy was an ace fielder last season and worse with the bat than Young…so I’m guessing this would be a marginal upgrade at best.

Let’s look at WIns Above Replacement totals from last year to be sure:
Young-1.7
Kennedy-1.7

Based on this, it would seem that trading Young would be a sideways move from a WAR perspective. Would Young have better numbers switching to the weaker league? Possibly…but then again he plays in an offensive paradise and Busch is a neutral-to-pitchers park.

Now, lets think about salaries here. Kennedy will make 4 million next year, while Young (thanks to a batshit contract extension that was negotiated with several years left on the previous deal) will make 16 million next year and will make that for 4 years after that too. To make it cost effective, Texas will have to eat a frighteningly tremendous chunk of that contract. PLUS the Cards will probably have to throw in another couple of pieces.

So…no on Young is the logical step.

Ok

Damn there are a lot of Michael Young haters in the room sweet jebus!! His PMS numbers were up from last year I heard..

Glad we didn't over pay him.

He’s going to be getting 15 mil per and he has won that many games once in the last five years. For that price we may be able to get Sheets and Looper. I sure hope we end up with one of them.

by sharpwp on Jan 14, 2009 6:51 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sheets and Loop for $15M?

I seriously doubt that Sheets will sign for under $12M and I also doubt that Looper will sign for under around $7. That would be a solid rotation if we could get them both though.

Last year

Last year no-one could stand Looper now we’re begging for him? Does anyone remember how BAD he could be in games I mean seriously. I would not be ok with Looper coming back because he is a sub par pitcher and if that’s the best the Cardinals can generate for our team then consider me very dissapointed. Does that mean I’ll give up my tickets or stop going to Bush, No, not as long as Albert is playing, but I expect us to commit to win. Resigning Looper is like getting back together with your ex girlfriend, some minor thrills, but mostly been there done that..

by ghostofjimlindeman on Jan 15, 2009 5:46 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

All of this is very true

But other than Sheets, who’s going to be a better fit than Looper? I also don’t think we’re begging for him quite yet (see the Ben Sheets petition)

We should move McClellan to the rotation

Then re-sign Springer for half of what Looper would cost. Does anybody else think that the McClellan-Boggs combo at the back of our rotation would be any worse than Looper would be. The only thing is that McClellan-Boggs would almost certainly have more upside than Loop.
