La Russa 'looking forward to giving' closing job to Carpenter

Star-divide

I really am not liking this.

I mean, after some great door-shutting by Perez (except for the two blown saves), why would TLR go and break a kid's confidence like that?

I would much rather have Carp come back in some capacity in the bullpen, before eventually working back into the rotation to be ready for next year. This way, you have a healthy, ready Carpenter and a young, confident, and hopefully dominant closer.

Opinions?

I don't like it at all

of course I don’t like the idea of Carp pitching at all for the rest of the season. I would rather his arm get rested until spring. He is way too valuable in both terms of ability and cost to this team in the future. Why take the chance? Perez should be the man at the back for the rest of the season. Yet another reason I do not think LaRussa is the manager he used to be.

I am stunned; knock me over with a feather......

I am liking what Perez brings to the table. The organization has drafted/groomed him for this role. Just go ahead and trade him already, because Tony ain’t going to have him close next year either.

I think it is too much of a risk for Carpenter’s health.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

a ploy?

i’m thinking that Tony’s having some fun with the media. even he said that Carp would likely not be available more than once per series, and maybe not even that often. i think he’s, once again, trying to protect Perez by keeping the “Closer” title off of him. i think he’s also trying to fire Perez up and motivate him to “win” the job, rather than just handing it to him by default because of the failures of others. he did the same thing with Waino in ‘06 until he was literally left with no other option but to officially declare Waino the closer. TLR’s public statements regarding Perez have been universally positive, so i don’t think there’s another Reyes-type situation here.

i think he’s also trying to show Carp some respect. Carp has to feel horribly about this season, and this way TLR gives him a role of honor and respect on the team without really altering the dynamics of the club. and let’s be honest: does anyone on this board want Carp coming out of the pen in the 6th inning of some meaningless game? it was sad enough seeing Izzy reduced to that.

personally, i’d rather Carp was just shut down for the year, but he obviously wants to play if he can. i’d also rather TLR stopped trying to protect or spur emotions by manipulating the press. but that’s his style and he isn’t gonna change. in any event, i don’t think this reflects terribly on Perez or his future with the team.

yes, this is the right move

FWIW, Perez has 35 outings with the MLB team this year and 26 with memphis. That is getting close to the “breaking point” that Merry CRasmus identified, and we need YP next year as much as we need carp next year. Carp’s arm should be pretty fresh. I’d feel a lot better about them splitting the load than I would about anything else.

Next year, though, the job should be CP’s to lose, unless he blows 3 or 4 more this season.

the ******* plane has crashed into the mountain.

I have tried to squash a lot of the concerns abuot Perez and the closers job for a while now

but I’m at a bit of a loss for words here. Of course the quote doesn’t exactly say he’d be giving Carp the job specifically (and the headline is slightly misleading) but it does pretty much say that he’d prefer to use Carp.

I advocated for Carp in the pen all year, but by no means did I want him closing. I really don’t see the benefit in doing this.

But, as we’ve all known about LaRussa, we’ll have to wait and see. I think he might be panicking a little with the cubs series coming up. He doesn’t want to see any games blown when there is still a chance they could make the playoffs.

In the world I see--you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty carpool lane of some abandoned superhighway.

Once a series

so Carp gets the middle game and CP gets the other two. Had to report something on an off day. Could be worse, TLR could be suggesting Jiminez instead.

Bottom line, the bullpen can’t blow any more games in 08. Starters are going seven and eight innings only to lose because the offense can’t score late and the bullpen can’t protect a one run lead.

no big deal.

This is classic LaRussa “protecting” his players. He insists and acts like Perez isn’t the closer, even though he is, in order to not put the pressure of being the “closer” on him. We don’t want the big bad media throwing a wrench in Young Pitcher by all this closer talk.

And big deal if Carp gets a save chance every three or four days. Two good closers are better than two bad ones (Izz and Franklin).

by abothecardinal on Sep 8, 2008 8:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i second this

But feel free to panic everyone. I honestly don’t see how anyone could not want Carpenter pitching in any inning over Perez.

However; snice Perez came back up tony has said he isn’t the closer. That the best pitcher for the job will close. And Perez has been on the mound every save situation snice. (save one; after he blew two straight in pitched 3 out of the 4 days.)

by Evilfrog on Sep 8, 2008 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no big deal

but all the media subterfuge didn’t help Ankiel much. I think most players are too sophisticated to pay much attention to this stuff. They know the only way to know what TLR will do is to show up and see what happens.

right

Most of us don’t think his efforts amount to much in the way of protecting his players, but that doesn’t stop him from doing it.

by abothecardinal on Sep 8, 2008 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The 'closer' as Tony defines it would be the best pitcher in the pen.

Does anyone really think Perez is going to care if a Cy Young winner gets some saves? Isn’t this what a lot of people were clamoring for a couple weeks ago? It’s not like he’s being supplanted by Brad Thompson or Ryan Franklin. Heck, he’s not really being supplanted at all.

On a list of things to disagree with TLR about, this might be last.

by azruavatar on Sep 8, 2008 9:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well put, azru

besides, perez is going to run into some days when he’s pitched two days in a row and he just SHOULDN’T go out there. this should be (and probably is) far less bothersome to Perez than TLR’s charade about not making Perez the closer but “he-who-comes-in-in-the-ninth-inning-of-close-games.” you wanna pick on tony for playing with Perez’s mind? that’s my nomination.

by tom s. on Sep 8, 2008 10:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

Carp will get some appearances so he and the organization will know what to do going into the offseason, and in key spots too. Perez will get his save opportunities, given that Carp can’t throw that much right now. It sounds reasonable to me. I think all will be just fine.

As you said, of all the things to holler at TLR about, this is quite far down the list. This is far more defensible then allow one Jason Isringhausen to pitch at all.

the part I don't like isn't the Perez/closer role

I just don’t want Carp pitching anymore this year. I guess I have to get used to that fact.

Given the recent history of...

1) Carp’s injuries, and
2) TLR, Duncan, et al. trying to pull of some crazy shit (i.e. – move Looper, then Welley into the rotation after being relievers, etc.)

does anyone else think that the Cards may be auditioning Carpenter as the next closer for the St. Louis Cardinals? I mean, this is a guy who, when pacing himself over the course of 5-9 innings per game has put up Cy Young statistics while with the team. Just think what he could do if he could just concentrate on throwing one inning of “fireman” work, instead.

I do not know how this will affect his durability. Maybe for Carpenter, throwing more often for shorter periods of time will be better for his arm. He has been a great starter (at times in his career) because he has great stuff. Maybe his arm cannot take the 32 starts at 6-8 innings a pop. Maybe he’d be a great reliever because of his great stuff and his mental makeup…and something dealing with how his body heals…

If so, I’d say that the back of the bullpen will shape up nicely with Carp, Perez, Motte, and Franklin (being used to close games in that order).

That creates another problem, though…what does the rotation look like for next year? Do you almost certainly have to go for two innings eaters (Lowe, Garland?) instead of a Lowe and a Burnett? Do you offer both Looper and Lohse arbitration?

I leave it up to you guys to discuss.

Sure Carp would be Papelbon if he closed

but i much prefer him being a starter and winning games single handedly by throwing 8 innings of shutout ball.

Milt Thompson FTW!

D'oh, hit post too soon.

I can see on a young gun like Wainwright or Reyes, or something, but with an aging veteran with a lot of history on the injuries front…it might not be a bad ploy.

I was initially

in favor of Carp closing when he first came back, but since the “hiccup” with the shoulder I am a little nervous about it. The tiebreaker for me is that Al Hrabosky thinks it is a bad idea, so it must be the right thing to do.

In light of the news of Carpenter's nerve problem in his shoulder,

I just have to ask—Was LaRussa aware that Carpenter was having trouble recovering from his last relief appearance? If not, why not? If so, why say Carpenter’s going to close?

I am not a particular fan of LaRussa-and one of the reasons is that he says crap like this—I mean, is he just making stuff up?

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

Awareness

I’d say TLR was aware of it because he didn’t put him into any games.

by stlfan on Sep 14, 2008 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he had to be aware of it

which makes that statement even more puzzling
