Firesale Possibilities

Of course we fans like to speculate on who the front office will be looking at for middle infield help as the main goal this off season; and find an "impact bat" to help Pujols.  Instead of listing off all of the players we would like to see in the Lou next season, lets go a different route.  Lets take a look at teams who are most likely to have a fire sale this off season. The most logical teams are the Mariners, Padres, and yes the Marlins.

Lets just get the Marlins out of the way first.  Of course we all salivate at getting a bat like Dan Uggla's.  Sadly, he is not likely to be traded.  It seems the Marlins would like to improve their infield defense and move Cantu to first.  This opens up third for Uggla to shift over to, the position he played the most time at in the minors.  The other players likely to be traded are Jeremy Hermida and Kevin Gregg.  Knowing the Marlins, if we want a player, we will drastically overpay.

Padres...oh, the good ol' Friars.   Obviously they wont be trading players such as Adrian Gonzalez, Peavy, or Young...but they could potentially have holes in their outfield and have some middle infield players to spare.  Depending on what their front office decides, a Khalil Greene could become expendable.  Not a great fit, but defenitely a possibility.

Now to the team that really grabs my attention: The Seatle Mariners.  The M's have globs of players that could be available: Jose Lopez, Yunieski Betancourt, Eric Bedard, and yes...even Ichiro.  Lopez is an offensive based second baseman...and he wont win any gold gloves, but his bat would definitely improve the offense.  Betancourt is a decent shortstop (has trouble ranging to his left) who is not too bad with the bat.  He isn't Derek Jeter, but he did hit right around .270 with 6 HR and 47 RBI.  Not to bad in my opinion.  Bedard is a non-tender candidate if his medical report comes back bad...so he really could be of no help.  If his exploritory surgery comes back negative, then he would cost a decent package in terms of prospects.  The player that intrigues me the most is Ichiro.  Yes we are overloaded with outfielders at the moment, but Ichiro would be that impact bat that Tony wants.   I personally wouldn't mind having one of the M's middle infieders...both are young and would help solidify the offense. Ichiro is a dream...but still would be kick ass to have in St. Louis.

Is this a great fanpost?  Absolutely not.  But atleast is opens up some more ideas for us to think about than the almost cliche rumors of Uggla and Roberts.

word out of seattle is that ichiro is a clubhouse cancer

lopez is a really good offensive 2B, but it would take a lot to get him…probably incuding jones to replace their own jones who they gave away for bedard…may be worth it, though i’m not sure what his contract situation is

still, no to ichiro, his contract is insane

Ichiro...

… the M’s are part-owned by a Japanese group; no way they trade Ichiro. he has a no-trade clause anyway.

Lopez is a possibility, but the cost would be pretty high, and we seem more likely to pursue a SS this off-season in my view.

not just any Japanese group . . .

Lopez

What should we be willing to move for him? Obvioulsy Kozma could go. Do they have a need for Rasmus? What about Anderson?

Would Anderson, Kozma, and something else get it done?

Looking and their stats this year

and knowing nothing about their farm (except it isn’t good), I would say the Ms could certainly use a catcher and another OF. Everybody needs pitching. I would agree with a trade of Anderson, maybe DJones/Allen Craig/Jon Jay, plus a pitcher (boggs?). Not sure Kozma would do the trick but worth a shot if it would. I like the idea of Lopez since he is young , cheap, and seeingly more “get-able” than most other options.

Piñata - something children beat relentlessly with bats. Piñeiro - .858 OPS against. Some call it irony; I call it destiny.

i'm pretty sure the M's have catcher waiting in the wings

but do to the japanese ownership insisting on kenji jojahima playing, the catcher(clement?) hasn’t gotten a ton of at bats

They need major league ready talent as well as some farm help….i think skippy/ankiel, and jones/jay plus another c-level piece could get it done(hill?)…but that is probably to much for a 2b who really is a terrible defender, no matter how good his bat is

it's not just because Nintendo owns the M's.

He’s been a great catcher in the past (actually every year but now) and Clement didn’t exactly seize his opportunity when given it.

Seattle.....

I’m too lazy to look it up, but that is where Washburn is, correct? Maybe something for Jones and Washburn? Gives us a SP with a one year deal, and might make Seattle more inclined to move Jones. Just a thought.

what jones are you speaking of?

i don’t know of a jones on seattle’s team

not a chance.

they were asking for Melky Cabrera at the deadline. Don’t forget that Lopez was a scrapheap pickup for us.

both Skip and Barton > melky.

though I’m not sure I’d trade either for their lopez (though i admit, I’ve done a total of 15 seconds of research into the guy, but by RZR he is aaron miles defensively and he has a career high .320 OBP). But he’s 24, so those should improve, and he’d be under control for 3 years… have to sleep on it if I was Mo, I think he could get more for Skip. Or just let him play 2B.

or was that “melky for Washburn”? Pass on that for sure.

Firesale

When I first opened this thread, I thought you were talking about the Cards holding a firesale and I said no way. And looking at the list of our free agents next year, I’d say with more admantness absolutely not. Ryan Ludwick, Rick Ankiel, Troy Glaus, and Todd Wellemeyer are all on par to be “Type A” free agents which could mean 5 first round picks in the 2010 Draft. That would put in a lot of good, young, cheap talent to put around Albert Pujols to build for the future.

If Lopez is young and cheap and playing reasonably well, why would Seattle trade him?

I know it’s Seattle and all, but to me it makes no sense for a Lopez to be part of a firesale. Who would replace him? I just don’t see them moving Lopez.

She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.

Bedard...

… might be able to pitch next year, and is definitely obtainable.

by kindred on Sep 28, 2008 1:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

now THAT would be

a scrapheap pickup worth picking.
