Game 159 Open Thread: Sept 25 2008

Arizona Diamondbacks at St. Louis Cardinals, Sep 24, 2008 8:15 PM EDT

Davis Pineiro
6-8, 4.25 6-7, 5.21

what an incredibly disappointing year for the dbacks. they had the league's best record last year, went to the nlcs, then went out and added dan haren and (at midseason) adam dunn . . . . they got a cy young year out of webb, too. and here they are, about to be eliminated.

I've got a plan

since Seattle no longer likes Ichiro, we can fire Tony, send him to Seattle as their GM and then trade Ryan Franklin, Aaron Miles and Skip Schumaker to Seattle for Ichiro, straight up!

So where does he play next year? By raising his average 30+ points as a Card you know Tony will want him.

by paposse on Sep 25, 2008 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

The worst part is that you can clearly see

it is random chance he has raised his average. How many slow rollers has he hit up the middle just out of the reach of the MIF’ers has he hit in the last 2 weeks?

Yea.....

His .330 batting average in the 2nd half of the season is all luck.

by SoonerfanTU on Sep 25, 2008 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

So you take out a little "luck".....

And what, he’s still hitting above .300, with some pop, and he’s walking some. No?

by SoonerfanTU on Sep 25, 2008 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

If his BABIP dropped

to his career norm (.313), he’d be hitting around .275 since becoming a Cardinal. If you look at his other stats, he is right in line with who he was in 2007, a .245 hitter with occasional pop who can’t field a lick.

by Hardcore Legend on Sep 25, 2008 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

4.7% walk rate in september

that’s pretty awful.

"All I am saying is give Freese a chance!" -- nmstar

by SleepyCA on Sep 25, 2008 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

A "little" luck?

His career BAbip is .315
in August it was .452!!!
in September it “dropped” to .391

So was this luck? The answer is YES!

by Harknights on Sep 25, 2008 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

well

his .403 BABIP in september (on a 14% line drive rate) is most likely somewhere between 25-50% luck.

What has he done for you not to want him?

He hits with some pop.

Put him in the MI rotation.

by llabyellov on Sep 25, 2008 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

i think some people just see it as irrational to depend on him being a MI solution after 2008

and i can sympathize. he’s got one great season, and a great fraction of a season with us, which makes it tempting to see him as something he probably is not. we all crave a substantial upgrade and i don’t know if lopez gives us that.
but for the rest of 2008, even if he’s getting lucky, throw him out there. at this point it obviously can’t hurt.

Cardinals are a robust 15 for 31 today

Following up on Larry’s post yesterday about our historically high batting average, today’s production moves us up to .278994 – ahead of both the 2003 and 2004 Cardinals. This is posted with an inning to go, for what it’s worth

It really is amazing

how often the blue is right on those type of close plays

by Harknights on Sep 25, 2008 5:04 PM EDT reply actions

Padding the stats

Games like this are ironic. We all love to see Pujols hit his 35th, and Ludwick his 36th. We root for guys like Schumaker and Molina to stay over .300 average. We root for our starting pitchers to finish with a win to make their final records look better.

Yet, in actuality, all this padding of the stats does is hurt the team in the long run. We get fooled by strong finishes (Pineiro, Lopez), and make bad decisions. And the extra meaningless homer or two for Ludwick will only make him that much more expensive when his day comes to cash in.

surgery for Randy (barf) Flores

Read that Flores had surgery but will be ready for spring training.

I thought his contract was up. We could not possibly be thinking of resigning him, could we? Buy him a plane ticket out of town, and wish him good luck. If possible, I would have just stalled and let him pay for the surgery out of his own pocket next week.

As someone who grew up in Springfield, I can’t remember Mo St. (or SMSU) athletics without Rowe around. Nice guy. Sad to hear he’s retiring.

I thought he looked pretty good today

One borderline walk and a bloop single to left. Fastball had good movement, hitting 96. Good bite on the slider.

I wish he had Motte’s mound presence, though.

His stuff is good enough to get guys out, his issue is trying to find the zone.

isn't it a bit ironic, though

that joel piniero – “the Eliminator” – helped kill the mets’ post-season hopes last year, and pounded the nail into the diamondbacks’ hopes this year?

I guess (after looking up the details) the circumstances aren’t THAT similar, since the mets were still tied for first at the end of the day after Pineiro’s gem, and after losing again to the marlins the next day came back and were tied for first again two days later (going into the final day of the season), but whatever; based on 2 full years of sample size, if we play a near-contender in the last week of the season next year, I know who I want to start.

Yeah, some of us are still here.

Truthfully, I felt really bad about this game. I live closer to Phoenix than to STL, and my wife is a D-backs fan. To see their wheels come off so utterly, and particularly, to allow yet another $%^&* big-market, media-favorite team into the post season in their place, was more than slightly painful. But the elimination was coming anyway, so why not accomplish it with a Cardinals win that they really need for emotional purposes?

by StanTheManFan on Sep 25, 2008 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Good name by the way. I actually had the pleasue of interviewing Musial once. Unbelievable experience.

I, too, was sorry to see the DBAX go down. Hard to figure with their team. Webb and Haren would have been tough – particularly in a short series.
