I just don’t see how anyone can really like that lineup. There is a very good chance that 5 out of the 9 are not even with the team next year (Lopez, Kennedy, Phelps, Johnson, and Izturis). Might as well make sure that we show other teams their abilities? (on second thought, that isn’t a bad idea)

Still gotta see what we have in Izturis, no need to see about Barden at SS?

if you get a chance (and no where near in the near future, way too many important things to do) and come across a couple of ballparks that have been hit pretty hard (preferably little league type parks – for the kids) that looks like they need some help, could you drop a fan post?

I’d like to bring some money, equip and few friends down to work on the baseball fields if no one is already doing it. Could be a fun couple of weeks.

You kind of scouted his appearance on futureredbirds a while back...

Do you think his ball may appear straight on pitchfx, but when a batter is in the box they have trouble picking up the ball due to the short arm action, and the 98 MPH heat he throws.

I said he reminds me of a guy I faced back in College…. The guy’s ball appeard to rise and pick up speed as it got closer to the plate.

Think Motte has been poorly scouted, by all who thought his stuff was too straight?

by ICbirdfan on Sep 24, 2008 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he's thrown a handful of innings in the bigs

It’s unfair to assume that he’s going to pitch like this everytime he takes the mound. His command has been better than expected and the “breaking” pitch has played MUCH better than I thought it would. His secondary stuff still needs work. As teams get more video on him, he’ll go through some rough patches.

Don’t forget that back in May/June he was getting eaten up in the minors. Part of that was a confidence issue — he was walking a few more guys and getting hit hard. He hasn’t encountered that yet in the big leagues.

I still think he’s going to have some bumps along the way but the fastball has been about what I expected. It’s very straight but anyone with that much velocity can have a successful career (see Farnsworth) even with fringy secondary stuff.

by azruavatar on Sep 24, 2008 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree.

My concern with Motte is when he has to pitch to the Astros, Cubs…. you know NL central teams on a repeat basis. I think they are going to get on to him and he really needs a 2nd pitch.

I was just wondering if his deception was not accounted for. You know how Worrell is deceptive one would think. People don’t think of Motte as deceptive, but he may have a bit of deception based on release point more than velocity(which helps)

I think you did an outstanding job tracking the pitchers on futureredbirds.

by ICbirdfan on Sep 24, 2008 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

to be fair

he has been pitching for strikes for a while now (after that issue – when perez came up the first time). he’s trusting more and more.

and now he gains confidence from a solid Sept showing.

last thing any batter wants to face, a confident 98mph fastball

by AdjustedExpectations on Sep 24, 2008 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh yeah, Motte attacks the zone...

That’s what I like about him… He knows what works for him and he is going to get beat using it.

Seems like Perez just can’t find the zone right now, almost aiming. I think the confidence thing is very important thing too. Chris has gotten knocked around a bit, and just does not have that attack mentality right now. If you couple that with the fact Perez has had control issues in the minors it’s probably not odd that he is going through this rough stretch where he can not throw a strike on the first pitch especially.

he was struggling with control and they came out to look at him at one point.

Of course, that didn’t deter Tony from sending him back out there already at 104 pitches. I can only cringe at if Wainwright had thrown a perfect inning, how many pitches would have Tony left him out there for? If no runners get on base but it takes 17 pitches, would Tony have let him go 122 pitches?
