doesn't look too good for the dbacks; they're 2 games back in the loss column, and the dodgers finish out the schedule with 6 games against the two bottom teams in the nl west, san francisco and san diego. then again, the dodgers will be facing some very difficult pitchers this week: jake peavy, matt cain, and tim lincecum all loom, while the dbacks face less imposing mound challenges from the cards and rockies. it ain't over yet.

Season winding down
I’ve heard a lot of chatter about just wishing this season would end. I, for one, will be very sad when the season ends. It’s a looooooooong time until opening day 2009.
defy, cards, defy. hey logic --- you suck.

I agree. It’s a long, cold winter without some baseball.

Usually I feel that way
but the closer we get to ending this mess, the better.
It’s like your Michael Jackson tape collection. Yay, you liked him for awhile, yay it was hip to do so. But, yeah…he’s kinda embarrassing now.

I would feel that way, too...
if not for Felipe Lopez. I just hate that guy. Of course, I’m sure he’ll be back next year…
Felipe Lopez - next year's Joel Pineiro
Why do you hate him?
He’s been a great hitter since coming here. I agree that he has no business playing in the outfield, but he’s better than Eckstein/Miles/Ryan/Kennedy in my book.
defy, cards, defy. hey logic --- you suck.
Woah
defensively? I can’t believe I’m going to say this, but arm strength aside, Aaron Miles is a superior defender.
I thought Lopez would be fine moving back to 2B, thus removing all those errors he made at 3B. Then he goes and makes a blunder in each of the 3 games this weekend. Sheesh. He’s like the opposite of Adam Kennedy, 0 glove, all bat.
by Hardcore Legend on Sep 22, 2008 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Hmm
I didn’t really have his defense in mind, I admit. And I wasn’t around this weekend, so maybe I missed his true potential peeking through.
Still, even though the four guys I mentioned are fairly solid defensively—and I guess I should’ve mentioned Izturez, too, but I think my brain has blocked him from memory—I wouldn’t mind keeping him around. Or at the very least, I wouldn’t be upset if he showed back up.
I just didn’t understand the phrase “I just hate that guy.” There’s this perception that he was dropped from the Nationals, a crappy team, and therefor has no value. In my mind, Wellemeyer proved that line of thinking wrong this year.
defy, cards, defy. hey logic --- you suck.
He was dropped from the Nationals
because of his attitude. He was unhappy he wasn’t getting playing time and he had a history of being a bit of a hot dog.
The hot dog stuff carried over to St. Louis but he sure hasn’t had to worry about playing time!
by Hardcore Legend on Sep 22, 2008 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Because he's horrible in all aspects of his game?
Plus, he’s got an attitude problem.
Felipe Lopez - next year's Joel Pineiro
And...
he’s taking away playing time (or just opportunities) from young guys who might not suck as much as he has in his career.
I don’t like watching washed up veterans with attitude problems. I’d rather watch young prospects who play hard, who might not be any better (or even worse) than the washed up vets
Felipe Lopez - next year's Joel Pineiro
Its not his fault that he's "taking away opportunities"
Can’ blame Lopez that MO refuses to call up Colby. Everyone begged for Ryan to get some playing time, but the truth was that Tony was right: He’s not an above-average middle infielder. It was the mystery of the unknown that intrigued us about him.
I’m just saying that if you asked me to rank these 5 middle infielders that we have, I’d put them in this order:
1. Miles (vomit)
2. Lopez
3. Izturez
4. Ryan
5. Kennedy
I’m not even a lopez fan, and I don’t expect my views to represent those of the average fan. But yes, I was confused why someone would emphatically hate a player that has batted .344 in his time as a cardinal.
As for the errors… he’s played 6 positions since he’s played with us. I think anyone who got moved around that much in a matter of weeks would have some trouble.
defy, cards, defy. hey logic --- you suck.
After that pickoff
I take it all back. I officially jump on the hate bandwagon. :)
defy, cards, defy. hey logic --- you suck.
I really thought
I’d get flamed for saying that, but it’s something I’ve been looking at in preparation for this weekend. Kennedy’s probably been our 2nd best MI this year. Astounding!
what really shocks the hell out of me
is that I just spent about 10 minutes going through all of the MIF combos in the major leagues and outside of Baltimore and San Francisco’s shortstops, there isn’t single one out there starting that wouldn’t seem to be an upgrade over what we have out there.
Am I losing it, or is really that bad?
* sarcasm might be involved in this comment
it is really that bad
I wish I could tell you that you’re losing it. The good news is that it won’t be that hard to upgrade it.

I really don't think enough has been made
of the utter hypocrisy that is Tony’s lineup construction over the last couple of weeks. He has always implored his team to “play a hard nine.” He reamed out and then benched Brendan Ryan last season for not running out a pop fly or something, maybe swinging on a 3-0 pitch. Cards’ fans largely applauded this.
He has demanded, from every player, that they give 100% all the time. It’s a notion I agree with. Yet he has spent the last few weeks running Miles, Lopez, and Kennedy to various positions in the OF — even CF at least once. Does this help us win now? NO. Does it help us find out what we have for the future? Absolutely not. He is, essentially, tanking the last 3 weeks of the season. He is absolutely doing a disservice to the rest of the team, to pitchers who receive bonuses based on innings and wins, and to Pujols who is trying to win the MVP. If he doesn’t win, can we point to Tony’s lineup September lineup construction?
We mock it. We complain about it but nowhere does anyone call it what it is — tanking the season! No one complains about how hypocritical it is for Tony to expect 100% from his players and then to turn around and purposefully put an inferior lineup on the field. It’s justifiable if it’s in the name of playing younger players to find out what they’ve got. But that’s absolutely NOT what he’s doing. He’s deliberately costing the team games so that he can make a point to the front office. It’s w/o a doubt the most egregious transgression committed by a major league manager in many years.
It’s one thing to stink at your job — and many managers do. It’s another thing to roll over just to prove a point to the front office and more needs to be made of this.
like i said in the day post
he’s basically giving MO & Dewitt the double finger salute. and he’s getting away with it.

provide stats on players getting thrown out on the bases. I’d like it to be easy to find so that we could see how many runs plays like that one have cost the team this year. It’s probably no more than usual, or no more than other teams but it chaps my ass when someone does something that stupid!

If that's not a balk, Dan
what is? The hidden ball trick?
He stepped towards homeplate and then threw to 1st. That’s a balk in my mind.
by Hardcore Legend on Sep 22, 2008 8:37 PM EDT reply actions
I think that's what he did
but umps never call that. I think he picked up his front foot and put it right back down — never stepping to third. If that’s what they saw, that’s a balk.
That's what I'm thinking
otherwise, a pitcher could step towards home and throw the ball behind his back towards 1st.
Which would be awesome, of course.

If the Dodgers want to win the West they are going to have to win out
the rest of the season because the D-Backs are going to sweep us.

This September has been a total suckfest -
between this team and the $#@#$ Rams!
There's some fucking pros out there that wanna fucking play the game ... ... but you're stuck in the fucking stigma of the fucking Dodgers, and the Phillies, and the Cardinals, and all that cheap shit.
At least the Economy is doing well ...

lol
i can’t stand either team, but you are talking about the team that got its royal ass kicked by an injury depleted ’Hawks, lol
They both will be playing for a couple of wins this year, and frankly KC will probably do better overall.

is it possible that both go 0-16? who would be the #1 pick?

technically yeah
they don’t play each other during the season.
and off hand, not sure.

just like the standings but in reverse.

If the Cardinals don't win double digit games in September
THEN can they fire the manager?

I'm sorry but all this talk about Tony & Dave coming back
next season has really got me pissed. It’s like Groundhog’s day. We are going to have to repete the same season for another year. 2007…2008..2009?

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I would just like to point out to you
that should the Mets continue to suck at life:
1-2 vs CHC
1-2 vs FLA
Final Record: 88-74.
How the Astros tie:
5-1 vs CIN/ATL
1 Game makeup at home vs Cubs day after season ends.
Final Record: 88-74.
How the Brewers tie:
3-3 vs PIT/CHC
Final Record: 88-74
Three way tie for Wild Card.
That doesn’t even include the Dodgers/DBacks potential tie. If that happens, we would literally get an extra game on Monday of the Astros vs Cubs to decide if Astros tie the Mets/Brewers.
Then we get the 1 game playoff in the West and the 3 team tournament for the WC.
WOOOOOOOOOOO!!
I love anarchy and free baseball!
by Hardcore Legend on Sep 22, 2008 11:50 PM EDT reply actions
That would be fun.
But I really don’t see the Astros still in this…but who knows. Now that Yost is gone I am actually kind of rooting for the Brewers a little…I can’t stand the Mets.
We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
Oh, they are still in it.
5-1 vs those teams? That’s fairly easy. Brewers swept by Cubs? Possibly. Mets unable to win against two good teams? Yup.
It’s Gonna Happen.

True...believe it or not the Reds will be tough for them, Dusty has them playing
the best they have played all season….2 months too late though. The Reds are a better team than we are right now.
I think the Dodgers are in trouble. I think the D-Backs will at worst go 3-1 against Tony’s hijinks and will force the Dodgers to sweep the Giants the last 3 games to win the West…which they won’t do.
We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
Just so I know in the future.
One of the reasons that Rasmus wasn’t called up was to prevent his clock from starting.
So what does that mean financially?
How does that change things in terms of when would/does he become arb elig?
When would/does he become a free agent?
does one month move things that much?
i think
its six years he’s under control once he’s activated. fourth year is arb eligible i think. i’m really not sure though. i think if he puts up amazing numbers he can be arb eligible after two years.
Even then
if he puts up great numbers, I’m sure the Cardinals will buy out his arbitration and give him a long-term deal.
See: Hanley Ramirez, Evan Longoria, Ryan Braun, Jose Reyes, David Wright, etc.
by Hardcore Legend on Sep 23, 2008 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions
Exactly...
which is why he wasn’t not called up for financial reasons, but because Tony doesn’t like him and he will likely be traded in the offseason…(IMHO, anyway).
