Game 152 Open Thread: September 18 2008
St. Louis Cardinals @ Cincinnati Reds

| Lohse | Volquez |
| 13-6, 3.80 | 16-5, 3.22 |
the cards are now almost as close to last place (14.5 games) as they are to first (13.5). they're also under .500 for the year on the road, after having been 9 games over through the first 5/6 of the schedule . . . .
but we love 'em anyway. c'mon fellahs, get a win.

Huh, and here I was thinking that using players like Stavinoha and Barton might help. I’m sure glad that Tony is here to set the lineup straight! Who needs prospects when you can just use light hitting middle infielders everywhere!
I was a firm supporter of TLR until now. This lineup has sent me over the edge into the anti-Tony camp. Pardon my French, but this is b***sh**.

no one can argue with THIS being the worst lineup of the year, right?
I would almost expect this lineup to produce a win it is so bad, but I am starting to believe we have seen the last big red W of the year.

What's the message though?
Don’t bother developing any position player prospects in case people get hurt, because I’ll never ever play them?
I don’t see what Mo really could have done, except maybe get some bullpen help. And Tony is actually using some of the young bullpen guys.

either way
this team would be in a hell of a lot better position right now, in this playoff race that everyone here seems so concerned about with those players.
You can’t have it both ways. You can’t say you want to keep all the prospects and not sign Barry Bonds for league minimum and then complain that the team isn’t in contention when they made zero moves.

No, it’s more like the team didn’t bring up prospects to play. If Rasmus was up we wouldn’t be seeing Kennedy in right or Miles in left.
I don’t want the team to make moves for aging vets…I want them to use the resources that they have: playing actual outfielders such as Barton and Stavinoha and calling up the top prospect in Rasmus.

Besides, just because the team was mathematically still in the “hunt” doesn’t mean they actually had a chance.

still, with basically no chance of winning anything
give me a lineup you think would be good enough to make it to the playoffs. A lineup constructed of players currently on the roster keeping in consideration that Glaus wasn’t available for a big chunk of the time.
Remember, Freese wasn’t on the roster.

okay,
so you’re saying for that week without Glaus, you play Lopez at 3rd, right? Well, they lost all 5 of those games. Is Skip now playing against lefties? LaRue batting 6th? Followed by Izturis?
That’s not a good lineup.
Depending on where you want to say the slide began you could say either August 29 or September 10. Outside of Barton, that’s basically the same lineup we saw get swept by Houston and blew 2 of 3 to Arizona, right? Then they had a good series against Florida (that I think should have probably been a sweep, right?), and then Glaus and Molina got hurt against the Cubs and they’ve sucked since.
So, while i agree that that is the best lineup they could put out there, I doubt those guys could or would play every single day and be any better than what we’ve seen.

I never said they would
but now you are making two arguments, how we lost games and what the best lineup would be. Bullpen decisions and pitch-hitting decisions factored into those loses as well.
And I said that wasn’t a game by game basis. But Aaron Miles has started more games during that stretch than Brian Barton and Nick Stavinoha in the OF. That’s disgusting.

yeah, why don't I need to see Barden or Stavinoha?
Barden has gotten all of 6 ABs this season since his callup. 6 ABs is enough to know what kind of player he is?
Stavinoha has all of 44 ABs this season. I suppose 44 at bats is enough to prove to some people that he has nothing, but it doesn’t to me.
If they are gonna piss away the rest of this season, then Barton, Stavinoha, and Barden should get extended playing time to see if with regulat at bats, maybe they might actually be worth something?

I wish TLR would consider putting Mang in the #2 spot in the lineup. Keep the pitcher in the 8 hole. Skip gets on base a lot it seems, though I didn’t look up stats, but Albert has come up in the 1st with 2 outs and no runners.

Tony’s explanation during the pre-game was: “We’ve lost a bunch of games in a row so we need to do something to shake it up. I put every left-handed bat I could into the lineup.” Or something pretty close to that.

good thing we don't have any outfielders
who are good at getting on base by working the count. It would be an awful idea to start one of them against a guy with control problems. Wouldn’t send the right message.

Best news I have heard in 3 weeks.
"I remember once talking to one guy on the Cardinals and asking him what Pujols was like as a teammate. He said something that’s really special, if you think about it. He said: "Albert is so good that you feel like you let him down when you screw up." I thought that had to be the ultimate line that could ever be said about a ballplayer. I build my baseball team around that ballplayer."

we’d probably have to pay $3.5M or so of it.

i just read the article
love the title: “Kennedy wants Cards to trade him”
Mo: “Dude, I’ve been trying, believe me I have…”
Seriously though, i feel bad for the guy; he’s never not tried, never not hustled or been lazy; he played through pain and did everything he could to help the team win. he’s just not good at hitting a baseball anymore. He was very diplomatic about the whole thing in his real quotes, imho (the one in your title is a bit misleading, but funny given the way the team is playing ;). It’s sad that he’s gonna be replaced by a jerk like Lopez, who will have to put up close to an .850 OPS to replace AK’s glove with his own and whose attitude seems to be much more volatile.
Also, and this is pretty banal, but it says he “asked” to be traded, it didn’t say he “demanded” to be traded. Actually, I don’t think he has the right to demand a trade, since you have to have been traded while under a long-term contract to have that right. Since he signed as a free agent, he’s stuck with his lot in life unless Mo feels charitable.
An interesting riposte would be if Mo publicly offered to void his contract and let him become a free agent. If Kennedy qualified for the “demand a trade” clause of the CBA that AK signed under, that is what Mo’s response would have to be, if he couldn’t find a mutually suitable trade partner.

he has to know that none of the fans like him. He goes through life looking so miserable, it can’t be fun being Adam Kennedy.
