Losing
The Cardinals are already on what has been a season high losing streak (6). Tonight, they stare down loss #7. The last time they lost 7 games in a row? September 13th of last season. The pitcher that handed it to them? Aaron Harang.
Yikes.
by Hardcore Legend on Sep 17, 2008 7:09 PM EDT reply actions
didnt they hang like 10 runs on Harang last time?
Hopefully they do something like that.
I don’t even think this team could blow that kinda lead

At least we can have fun
watching the 500 dogs sitting in the seats at the game!
How will Tony ever be able
to pay attention?

maybe he won't
that could be the key to winning this game.
Too harsh?

Someone said that Tony said in the pregame
that ‘we know what we have in Brian Barton out there, we want to see what we have in Brendan Ryan’.
AKA: We’ve given up.

I thought we had a IFer in Ryan
not an OFer

I guess we know what we have in stavinoha, as well. Poor guy.

TLR's pre-game explanation
In his interview was, Barton’s been up the whole year, they know what they have in him.
Using that logic, wouldn’t it make sense to bring up a young OF’er and a young 3Baseman. Or, perhaps just put Ryan at 2nd, sit Grit, and let the young guy Barton play?
"Baseball is like Church, many attend, few understand" - Wes Westrum
If I've learned anything about Tony
it’s that explanations aren’t theories. They are isolated to one 1 event and should not be tested or applied to others.

it is kinda hard not to have a better line than Ryans
Barton’s line is .274 .361 .400
Ryan’s line is .243 .306 .291 (worst offensive OFer in STL history?)
* sarcasm might be involved in this comment
is there a record
for the most OFs used during the course of 1 season?
So far we’re at: Duncan, Skip, Ludwick, Ankiel, Barton, Mather, Phelps, Stavinoha, Miles, Lopez, Ryan; didn’t Adam Kennedy play out there a game or two?
The only players we haven’t run out there are Colby Rasmus and the ghost of Luis Saturria!
au contraire, mon frere!
try this game w/ him in LF and just this past Sunday with him in RF.
Forgot about Rico, though. Wow!
IT DID NOT HAPPEN (it couldn't have)

No I am not saying they said that.
Yesterday they said that while we do have Perez. It wouldn’t hurt for the team to look for a Vet closer.
Then today they said that this off season we are looking for an impact bat and that the OF is full with Ludwick, Ankiel, Skip, Duncan and Mather (yes those are the only names mentioned) and that to improve on that would require the Cards to move an organizational player that we covet.
they did talk about rasmus yesterday though
i can’t remember the context, but they talked about him.
Hopefully they are setting the fan base up for the devastating Schumaker trade…

"Crud, does that booger-eating spaz make me wanna puke!" - Tanner Boyle
maybe Tony will pull a Whitey
remember when in mid-season, Herzog threw up his hands and said, “I can’t manage THIS team anymore.”
LaRussa could take the high road spin and say something like…it’s evident management will not spend enough money to get me the players I need to win with, so I’m moving on.
Since when is this about money?
We spent enough, but they were mostly all fragile old vets that predictably got hurt.
We have young players that might be able to help but we cannot use those so we are stuck with scrappy players devoid of talent.
See: Mulder, Carp, Clement, Izzy
For examples of spending money without results.
While possibly that's true...
Tony seems to be deliberately making the worst out of what he has. Starting Ryan at any position other than SS for instance (even if he handles them defensively, he doesn’t hit well enough to play anywhere else), when there are better options. Refusing to play youngsters if they were called up (Freese, Rasmus, etc).
Felipe Lopez - next year's Joel Pineiro
yeah
this team could easily be Pujols, Lopez, Ryan, Glaus, Barton, Ludwick, and Schu right now. which wouldn’t have been too bad.

are they all really so scared that he’s actually going to assault someone?
Uh oh! Tony has the fungo out like when Josh Hancock died...
Tony was being a world class prick challenging the media about asking questions about why a guy who was wasted was drinking and driving.
Why?
Tony is a large part of the reason they are losing, opting to start middle infielders in the outfield (including Ryan, who just doesn’t hit, period) instead of Barton or Stavinoa (sp?) (the latter of whom hasn’t hit much, but at least hit at AAA unlike Ryan). And Tony has refused to let Mo call up guys from AAA, saying he wouldn’t play them (in favor of Ryan and Floppy and the horde of MIFs)

Freese
What positions can he play? I’m assuming 3rd and 1st? Anything else?
When is the last time TLR had a bench player that could only play those two positions?
i think he played some outfield in memphis
not sure. i think just about every player in memphis this year played some outfield.
not that it matters. if can put ryan and miles in the outfield, i’m sure he wouldn’t mind putting freese out there.
he'd probably be a better 2B/SS than Lopez or Spiezio...
Anyway, as far as “the last”, I’d guess John Mabry?
"All I am saying is give Freese a chance!" -- nmstar
Mabry played lots of OF
along with 1B and 3B and i think some emergency catcher, or at least it was talked about… never mind no catching in games but he did pitch twice, not for Cards though…
"Baseball is like church. Many attend, but few understand." -Wes Westrum
If LaRussa is here next year
Freese won’t be, unless Glaus is severely injured.
by Hardcore Legend on Sep 18, 2008 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions
why not?
if mather and stavinoha can get some playing time this year, why wouldn’t freese get a chance next year? it depends on what’s going on with the roster of course, but i bet freese will get a long look in spring training at least.
its too early to make assumptions about who will or won’t play next year, i think.
Freese is a 3B
it makes no sense to try and turn him into a LF like they’ve done with every other player they’ve called up this year.
God help us if we can’t find enough guys to play the OF. If we have a need in the OF, it darn well better be Rasmus from Memphis and later in the year Jones from Springfield/Memphis.
Freese only playing time will be as a backup 3B for Troy Glaus, which means very little PT. He will stay in AAA.
If they try to turn him into anything other than what he is (hot corner), I’ll have lost all faith in the organization to put it’s foot down and end this silliness of turning everyone into a utility player.
by Hardcore Legend on Sep 18, 2008 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions
i wasn’t trying to say he should play the OF. i just meant its not as if younger players aren’t getting at bats. if there’s a need for a third basemen, he could very well be the guy they go to.
outside of that, he isn’t much use to the team if all he plays is one position. how many teams carry a guy on their bench that only backs up third base?
and he won’t be a better option than glaus at third base by next year anyway. defensively or offensively.
none of that has anything to do with la russa, either. teams just don’t carry two third basemen, unless they’re platooning (which rarely happens).
Right
which is why if LaRussa is back, Freese will be in AAA. Tony won’t carry a guy solely as a PH’er and a backup 3B. Especially carrying 13 pitchers.
by Hardcore Legend on Sep 18, 2008 2:02 AM EDT up reply actions
And he shouldn't.
Glaus is going to get most of the time, so why carry a guy that can only play one position? I know you don’t like it, but Ryan, Lopez, and a host of others can all fill in at 3rd when needed.
Now, if Freese can play another position, adequately, he might find a bench spot. I just don’t recall him playing anything but 3B in AAA this year.
by SoonerfanTU on Sep 18, 2008 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions
hell Lopez can fill in
not adequately though. Why can’t we have a real corner IF backup? This super utility type player nonsense is crazy.
