Game 149 Open Thread -- September 14, 2008

St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates, Sep 14, 2008 1:35 PM EDT

Thompson Davis
5-2, 4.61 1-4, 5.90

The Cardinals are now 7-9 against Pittsburgh, and in three of those losses they led by 4 runs or more --- including last night. If we'd just held those three leads (two of which were blown by our ace, Wainwright), we'd still be right in it, just 2 games behind with 14 to play. Think about that as we're watching the playoffs on TV.

unlike earlier in the season

I expected that Friday night. It just seems the Pirates are the better team right now.

Whoever fixed this...

I got it ready Friday when it was supposed to be Pineiro and Snell and just got cable back about 15 minutes ago.

Barton in RF, Ludwick in LF?

Must be because of the big LF in PNC, right?

Why didn't Molina PH last night?

OR Glaus for that matter. Neither will have to go on the DL with expanded lineups. I can’t believe that Molina could warm up pitchers between innings but couldn’t PH when we had a runner at 2nd in the 12th.

I was thinking about it last night

and all the ‘LaRussa got this team to overperform’ stuff is being washed away as this team slips further and further into 4th place.

They have to go 12-1 the rest of the way out even to win 90 games, something that was a ‘given’ just a month ago. Yikes.

That's because it was largely a myth...

IMHO, it was Ludwick more than anyone that caused the team to be better than expected. And now he’s slumping (and Glaus is hurt), so is the team. They only have one real bat in the lineup these days.

Correct Imundo. I will say he was doing some pretty awesome dunks at the gym today and says the leg feels good which is good news. He’s been working out with a local Division 2 college basketball team since he got back. Trying to get the touch back.

I'm sure Mo doesn't like his hand played.

If that is Rasmus’ dad and he is to be believed, here are the facts:

-When Jim Edmonds was traded, Joe Strauss was told Colby Rasmus would have as good a chance as anyone to be the Opening Day CF.
-Colby performed well in ST and then was sent to AAA.
-Colby struggles, surges, then gets injured. During that time, Duncan plays, Stavinoha and Mather get called up.
-Colby Rasmus played Florida League ball on a rehab assignment
-Cardinals lost Mather and Ankiel to injury in the span of 2 weeks. IF’ers Lopez, Miles and Phelps are converted to OF’ers.
-Cardinals fans are told ‘Colby Rasmus is physically unable to play’ but he will be available for winter ball.
-Colby’s dad says Colby is physically fine and he will not be playing Winter Ball.

So, what we have here is two plans. Colby’s plan of playing for the Big League club, looking to get a callup when the chance arrises. Mo’s plan, which is becoming clear, to not have Colby play AT ALL this season. Instead of giving him a month of PT in MLB, they want him to get that month in the Winter Ball.

Now, why is Mo doing it? Money? Edict from LaRussa? Who knows.

But, it seems clear that Colby probably was physically able to play, he and his family are miffed that he isn’t being allowed to play for the Cardinals for either money or managerial decisions and they are letting their frustrations be known that they won’t simply do what ‘is good for the organization’ since in their mind, the organization isn’t doing ‘what is good for Colby’.

How we ended up with the availability of trading Duncan, Skippy, etc to start the season as a strength to pissing off our top prospect is quite an amazing mess.

by Hardcore Legend on Sep 14, 2008 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

of course $$$ plays a key role in this...

Colbys family can’t be stupid? I know it sucks but basically it went this way…You were good enough in ST to probably make the team, but there were some other things that needed to be figured out first. Since you got off to such a slow start and Mather was Killing the ball it was only fair to call up Mather.

Now since Colby did not make the team out of ST and he started slow and then got injured it could have been decided to give him a shot out of ST in 2009. I don’t know if there was a lack of communication or what.

I can kind of understand why they are mad, but at the same time I just don’t get it. He is obviously from “one of those familes”

by ICbirdfan on Sep 14, 2008 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

of course

“what is good for colby” and “what colby and his 85 IQ dad think are best for colby” may not be the same thing. I’m sure Colby wants to be playing in the big leagues (duh) but that may not be what is best for his development right now, regardless of other concerns. There’s a long list of can’t-miss prospects who missed because they weren’t properly developed.

it does seem like there is some ego mishandling by the front office here, but his dad is a real nutjob.

But I remember reading in the Post Dispatch an

article about the Cardinals sending Rasmus to the MLB “Rookie School” you know, the one about handling the media and behavior (girls) that can get you in trouble.

Now, if I’m Colby, I’m thinking that means I’m about to become a rookie-a ML rookie. And now I’m the one being passed over, and they don’t even have enough outfielders. He sure didn’t have the best AAA season, but he did an admirable job to turn things around. He was playing pretty well up until he hurt his knee.

Maybe the whole lot of them ought to sit down and have a chat. Really. Everybody being po’d is bad for business, bad for PR, bad for the folks involved.

“Ego-mishandling” sure. But hey-just fix it.

in all of MLB,

in the past 10 years, there have only been 5 players colby’s age or younger who played every day in the big leagues and put up an OPS+ over 100. There have only been 12 players colby’s age or younger even given the opportunity to play every day in the big leagues. 3 of them were TB players and one was albert pujols.

I just don’t get the meme that we are doing him some kind of disservice by not bringing him up. It’s extremely rare that a player his age even have speculation that he’ll be brought up, much less such outright expectations. If he’s still in AAA in 3 years (and hasn’t just flat-out tanked) then a lot of this criticism will be fitting, but right now it really isn’t.

it’s not doing him a bit of damage to ask him to repeat AAA (and actually do well there) before making it to the show.

How often is a player that is considered 'above average'

talent wise get left in AAA instead of being called up while a team in a pennant race puts utility IF’ers in the OF, no matter the age?

I can’t imagine the number is very high of teams that refuse to promote guys from the level directly below the big league level and purposefully leave their roster short at a position by atleast 2 players.

We’re fine in the OF. If we can get an equal player at a “need” position, I say move him.

by SoonerfanTU on Sep 14, 2008 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

Next year? We’ll have Skip, Barton, Ludwick, a healthy Ankiel, a healthy Duncan, Mather….. You don’t think we can piece together a nice OF out of that?

by SoonerfanTU on Sep 14, 2008 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What makes you think Duncan and Ankiel will be healthy?

As exhibited by the last month, Barton won’t be with the big league team next season. Ludwick will probably be a good player again next season (if he can stay healthy) but he won’t have the kind of season he put up this year.

We need help (especially power and defense) in the OF next year more than likely. Skip, Ludwick, Ankiel all had career years this year. Will they repeat it? Will Rick Ankiel not be injured for a full season for once in his career? I don’t know.

But we thought we had a glut of talent in the OF this year, so much so that we could ‘trade from that strength’ and now look at us. A career minor league 1B in RF and a utility IF’er playing LF.

ball hit to miles on the ground, miles goes to field it and tag Minky and then throw to 1B…

Well Minky punched it out of Miles hand almost taking his glove off. NO UMP saw it somehow, I don’t know how.

Lopez is a nutjob

he grounded out yesterday and made a motion to Freddy Sanchez like “Forget you” like it was some random chance Sanchez caught a ground ball.

Lopez also took like 5 minutes to get around the bases on his dinger too. I can see what the attitude complaints were all about.

Brewers looking to get swept

If they do, we actually pick up a half game on them.

I almost want to freaking Astros to sweep the Cubs now and have the Astros, Phillies, Mets, Dodgers make the playoffs…only to watch the Cubs and Brewers fans cry.

Then again, I hate the Astros more.

The Brewers are flat out falling apart

Looks like the CC trade will be for not. If it wasn’t for their arrogance they showed when they played us I would feel sorry for them. Oh well, I think the Phillies have a better chance of beating the Cubs in the playoffs than the Brewers did. I can’t wait to see Yost get canned at some point next season.

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

If teams are willing to play Elijah Dukes and Brett Myers

I think the Cardinals can withstand Colby’s dad writing on a message board. It’d take a hell of a petty person to get riled up by that. And even if his father is a helicopter parent, the club would be stupid to move a talented kid for a reason like that.

These people are adults. They’ll manage to get through this methinks.

But don't you know

you are supposed to break the wild young horse first. Sure, he loses some of his spectacular speed and strength, but he is much easier to control that way.

I mean, you don’t want to end up with a guy that gets labeled a clubhouse cancer, shows up the other team on the field for no reason and takes an hour to get around the bases after a linedrive HR to a short porch.

Okay Felipe, I promise. I’ll leave you alone the rest of the night.

Me too

As I watch the Phillies finish off the Brewers in a series we should be riding the coattails on into the Wild Card lead.

If this were Chicago, LA, New York, etc and a manager coughed up playoff chances in 3 straight seasons (2006 – thanks Braves!, 2007 and 2008), he’d be gone.

by Hardcore Legend on Sep 14, 2008 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know but the Cards have limped through Sept.

This year the team is awful, I don’t know if I blame much of the demise on Larussa.

Ryan Ludwick has been horrible in Sept 229/ .289/ .429/ .718

Rick Ankiel has been horrible in Sept and before .133/ .235/ .133/ .368

The other thing is hasn’s Larussa’s teams beaten their win expectation lately? I think they overachieve and they are going to inevitably drop at some point, just has been Sept lately.

by ICbirdfan on Sep 14, 2008 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It depends for me

If ownership is going to pony up some money and get a few key guys this winter and try for one more run at October with Tony then I say keep him. But if they don’t have any plans to sign/trade for some “impact players” to fill out needs then it’s time for the LaRussa era to come to a close.
And when I mean sign some players, I mean go all out and trade for guys like Matt Holliday and Roy Halladay and get a legit SS and a closer.

I doubt ownership will do this …so I would have to say this should be the end of the road for Tony & Duncan with the Cards. I agree with HL…I’m tired of seeing this team die in September. The LaRussa era has been very successful but all things must come to an end at some point and I think the writing is on the wall.

We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there.

As someone mentioned earlier...

There just seems to be too damn much drama these days with the Cardinals. I know Tony has been a great manager, but this constant warfare in the press with people he’s pissed at has put me off the last couple of years. I’d hate for players to not want to be in St. Louis because they don’t want to have to deal with Tony. Of course I don’t know all the details of his feuds and who bears the most blame for them, but it seems like Tony is the one usually making the feud public…

Just my impression…

There is that

One has to assume that they will not be the best winners. A lot of “Yes we see your flag. We have ten of them.”

While a Cubs board would be the last thing on the mind of a WS champion Cards fan. I have to think that the flood of Cubs fans that would come on this board might shut it down.

It would also help if I liked anyone on the Cubs…but most of them bug the crap out of me.

Man...

The last couple of weeks have been a non-stop slap in the face. I know as fans we often live in the present and the most recent failure is always the worst…but, consider:

  • We’ve played terribly, coughing up a great chance to get back into the race.
  • In addition, it seems the Gods of baseball just don’t like us much this year. Hard-hit balls are swallowed by terrible fielders. Mental mistakes cost the team victories. Everything falls for the other team. So it goes. I’m thinking in particular of the last two games of the Cubs series.
  • The ASTROS passed us despite having a worse team.
  • We got swept by the freaking Pirates, who have been the worst team in baseball over the past two months.
  • Rasmus is still “hurt”.
  • Carpenter is done for the year and suddenly next season isn’t a surefire proposition.
  • Ankiel was finally shut down, weeks too late.
  • Randy Flores made his triumphant return. Fans everywhere ran for cover.
  • Chipper Jones passed Albert in the batting race.
  • People are now talking about Carlos Delgado as a legitimate MVP candidate. This, despite the likelihood Albert will have better stats in every single statistical category by the end of the year and helped prop up a Cardinals team that is considerably worse than the Mets.
  • Worst of all? Carlos Zambrano throws a no-hitter. BARF

I just want to scream and cry at the same time. What did we do to deserve this? Did Tony and Big Bill make a deal with Lucifer to win the 2006 World Series? It’s been little but sorrow and empty chances ever since. Yeah, we contended for much of this year and we allowed ourselves to hope. I was one of the many optimists here, and while I still want to be optimistic, the last week have left me pretty freaking dejected.

In all honestly

there’s nothing that’s going to happen in the next 2 weeks that’s going to make a bit of difference to next year. It really doesn’t matter who plays or who doesn’t. Outside of our draft pick, which sits at number 18 right now (how in the hell are we still ahead of the Dodgers!?!) is about all these last couple of weeks is going to effect next year.

At least that’s how I see it. I still want to see them win every game from here on out, but I’m not going to lose sleep over it.

I’ve got so much damn losing in my life right now, it’s hard to get worked up over it. The Cardinals are 4-8 in September. The Rams are 3-15 in the past two seasons. The NIU Huskies are 2-12 the past two seasons. And my old high school (Centralia, IL) has now run their current losing streak to 29 straight games in impressive fashion by losing to Highland on Friday 48-0.

Just because I’m losing my mind, I guess I’ll add those up for fun. In no particular time frame other than one that suits my fancy, my teams are 9-64. How awesome.
