Russ Springer Type A?
www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/09/elias-ranking-2.html
This could be great for us. Offering arbitration to Springer could get us a cheap, productive reliever, or it could get us some excellent draft picks. What would arbitration for him look like?
Isringhausen is a type B.
What's the best thing to do with these two? Don't we have to make an offer to get these draft picks? Does the risk with Izzy mean he's not even worth an offer?
Also, two decent targets for the cardinals, Rhodes and Ohman are not even type B, so signing them is draft-neutral.

The scarlet letter
I don’t think anyone would try to sign Springer as a Type A anyway. This is one of those cases where the player can really get a raw deal because of these designations.
Plus, if we offered arbitration he’d probably take it.

That'd be great, but...
Isn’t Springer pretty determined to stay around the St. Louis area, on account of his kid? Last year he was talking like he’d just as soon retire if he didn’t play for the Cardinals

Yup.
I think he’d retire before he signed elsewhere.

He's said
he’d retire if he was traded, too. I can’t see him going anywhere else, and would love to have hi back for a 1.75 mil type deal.

+1
You know what I’d really like to do with him? This doesn’t happen in baseball like it does in, especially, the NBA, but have him join the team 2-3 months into the season. I worry about him wearing down, so give him 2-3 weeks in AAA to get ready, then call him up for the last couple of months of the season.

yes, that would be a good plan
that, or schedule 2 or 3 15-day DL stints to get him rest and swap him out with a AAA player.

yeah, it isn't...
going to happen. springer isn’t going elsewhere.
looks like lohse will be the only guy offered arb; and if we sign one big free agent (burnett?) it’ll simply cancel out.
no way izzy gets the offer, right?
not very exciting in terms of draft picks.

no it won't
Burnett’s a Type A. Lohse is a Type B.
Sure, we’d be adding a supplemental round pick, but we would be losing our first round pick which is getting better by the day.

i'd rather not sign a type a SP
to much risk involved with starters…save that money and sign ohman and a 2B or SS…that way we keep our draft pick, and when loshe signs elsewhere, take our supp pick and run
oh and resign looper or offer him arby…i’m not sure how the rules work…if we offer loshe and looper arby, and they both decline, can we get two supplemental picks?

I could see him possibly returning to Houston......
just because he was well thought of when he was there, and they don’t seem to mind throwing money at older guys.

It has nothing to do with that
He has a kid who has some disability or something who gets great treatment in St. Louis. When he signed with the Cardinals the second time (after being away fro a while) he said he would basically take anything to be in St. Louis because his kid responded best to the instruction or treatment (or whatever it is they’re doing) than anywhere else and it wasn’t even close. That’s why he’ll never leave. He wants to stay with his family but won’t move them from St. Louis.
Here, I found a short article on the situation on the Easter Seals website. His son has Autism. Read the comments too, there’s more info in them.

he would pitch in Houston
as he did b/c his home is in Louisiana and he’d be close to home. Houston, however, decided they didn’t want him anymore since he couldn’t pitch more than 1 inning at a time. If they changed their minds, he’d be open to returning b/c of its proximity to his home but he’s certainly happy in St. Louis b/c of the treatment he’s getting for his son.

Yep
Doesn’t want to move his family out of the STL-area right now. He’ll play in STL, or retire.

We can't offer him arbitration....
because he’s accept and get paid a lot more than he would otherwise.

exactly...
there will be no picks for Springer. It’d be nice though. If anything he resigns for equal or lesser value or retires. There will be no arbitration offered. I think the cards know where he stands when it comes to his playing career and saint louis. So why pay more when you don’t have to? Springer has no leverage, nor does he even care about having that leverage. It’s saint louis or bust.

As documented by
Chris O’Leary, Burnett has terr mechanics. I’d rather just let Boggs/Parisi/or whomever pitch for us for the min and keep the draft pick.

As documented by Chris O'Leary
David Kopp has great mechanics (on the DL with a shoulder injury).

he called carp and garcia
of course that was after injury history

Neither should get an arbitration offer
Because they both might accept and cost the team WAY more than it would need to pay them both. Neither will probably sign anywhere else, and risking another year of Isringhausen at $8 million or more is not worth one supplemental pick anyway.
I also disagree with not signing a Type A starter, although I’d target Derek Lowe instead of Burnett.
