bullpen management at its finest
bring in the lefty (albeit a not very good one) to face a lefty batting .231, with the pitcher coming up next (also a lefty), and our lefty cant get to the second LH batter.

In 2004, Baseball America ranked Motte as the top defensive catcher
Throwing out 50 percent of would-be base stealers in 2005, Motte compiled 151 assists in just 171 games for his career. That is the one aspect of Jason Motte that people take for granted. He throws a straight fastball which makes it easier to hit but also locate. So he is power control pitcher with a catcher’s brain.

the thing that scares me about motte

Biblical origins. Think of St Peter. Think of the omnipresent medieval church and think of hitting your thumb with a hammer. You can’t swear, else the local priests will have you up before the Bishop and the Lord alone knows what the outcome of that will be, so you exclaim, in appropriate tone of voice, “For Saint Peter’s sake” and carry on erecting the shelves. This phrase was amended to “For Pete’s Sake” in later, less religiously oppressive, times.

re izturis getting thrown out earlier
sorry this is out of sequence (was putting my kids to bed)
this is highly subjective, but it seems to me that the Cards do a very poor job of advancing runners on hits.
I do not recall ever seeing so many runners not scoring from second on singles;
not scoring from first on doubles
and not even getting thrown out, just being held at third
it should be an easy enough stat to calc (for a guru) since its basically B-Ref’s outfielder throwing stat looked at in reverse
There was an article on that about a month or a month and a half ago…baseball prospectus I believe. It was essentially an attempt to provide a metric to rate 3rd base coaches….i don’t remember the details, but i don’t remember the cardinals being that far from league average.
but i agree, it seems like way too many occurrences for a single season
by NorseKaiser on Sep 10, 2008 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Huh?
Kinney’s fastball had 12-14 inches of “run” in to a righty with just 1-3 “rise”——and his “slider” had -3 and -5 inches down with 4 and 5 across. That’s pretty good stuff though the velo isn’t exactly exciting 89-91.

well, that stinks
I’ll be away for the next few days. I’ve got to take one of my helicopters elsewhere until Ike decides to pass over wherever he’s goin.
Hopefully my absence will be enough for the Cards to go on a 4-5 game win streak.

or a 3B, take their pick.

just think, if we had a real 3rd baseman, SS, 2nd baseman & LF
LUD would have hit a walk off HR.
yet another night of woulda, coulda, shoulda. it’s the theme of the 08 Cardinals.

seriously
at this point, even I don’t care about playing time for brendan ryan. If he isn’t playing SS, he’s useless to us. Freese needs to by wearing a high 80’s uniform tomorrow morning.
heck, if I’m him I show up at the ballpark regardless and make them escort me out…

well...
considering lopez doesn’t really play third base, and glaus could miss a few more games, who knows?
that would too much sense apparently...
but then you read this crap from LaRussa
La Russa said he didn’t expect the Cardinals to call up any more players from Class AAA Memphis. St. Louisan David Freese, a third baseman acquired from San Diego in the offseason in the Jim Edmonds trade, had a big year at Memphis but likely won’t be added to the 40-man roster. La Russa said he already had two infielders, Barden and Brendan Ryan, who hadn’t been playing much.“Who do you think has a better chance of getting a base hit?” said La Russa.“Barden had a good year. Ryan’s gotten base hits in the big leagues. I don’t see the need to stretch.”
Ummm…Ankiel really is too hurt to play, Glaus is dinged up severely and we have a third baseman who hit 20+ bombs at AAA while batting .300. It is sad that this team is too cheap to call up Freese. El Hombre and guys deseve a better effort from management.
in (front office) management's defense
why purchase a player’s contract if the manager isn’t going to use him?
why have a manager
that won’t use the players you call up?
by Hardcore Legend on Sep 10, 2008 11:20 PM EDT up reply actions
well, we could just fill up a full 40 man roster right now
but what manager would use all 40 players?
larussa probably hasn't seen freese since spring training
he knows lopez is hitting like .500 in the last week though.
i blame MO
he can cut the trash off the roster & call up any one he wants. taking the power away from Tony. yet, he sits there, doing nothing.
why?

OK, so, lets just assume that both glaus AND molina will be out tomorrow.
what’s your lineup? everyone wants defense right now, so here’s you defensive lineup:
Schumaker CF
Kennedy 2B
Pujols 1B
Ludwick RF
Ankiel? LF
Freese 3B
LaRue C
P
Izturis SS
at what point do you put a better offensive player in?
Ankiel won't play
for another week, as we’ve been told.

i thought we were talking about players in the minors
to play 2nd, 3rd, SS & the outfield? like Wallace, Colby, Freese, etc?
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
but it all started with the third base thing
wallace in the majors right now would be hella stupid.
colby, i’m with you.
but i’m talking about what la russa has to work with right now, IF freese were to be activated.
i don’t like that lineup, and i have no reason whatsoever to believe he would get playing time over some of the other guys….
ALTHOUGH i personally would like to see him in there a bit.
got it? i’m kind of riding the fence, and that’s intentional. there’s wishing, and there’s being realistic. maybe i’m failing at both, but i’m trying to do a bit of each.
ok, i get it
i was saying if MO cut guys like AK & IZ2 etc, and replaced them with Colby, Freese, etc, tony wouldn’t have to put out a crap line up now that we have so many guys hurt.
if MO simply called up those players without cutting the garbage, Tony would not play them. he’s already said so. so if MO cut them, Tony would have to play the kids. his power of playing who he wants to would be gone. and if he can’t understand that the garbage who were cut are not better than the kids who were called up, maybe, just maybe he’s not the man who should be running the Cards.
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
well i don't think there's a gm in baseball
that would kick tony in the balls like that. they signed him for two years, not five months.
fwiw
see i don't see it as an insult
i see it as MO doing Tony, and us fans a huge favor. Tony can’t help who he is. he trust vets, always has, always will. but when the vets are washed up, he still trust them no matter what.
well what if there were no washed up vets to trust? that’s all i’m saying.
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
that isn't TLR baseball
and i don’t disagree with you at all.
but, you know, its all wishful thinking. we’ve had a pretty fun ride with tony, 2008 included.
yes, all we have right now is wishful thinking
all i want is the best players playing for the Cardinals. i don’t care if they are vets, rookies, or midgets in kids uniforms, i want them to put their best foot forward each & every game.
can you, or any one else for that matter honestly say Tony feels the same way? no. and if he can’t, then he shouldn’t be running the Cards.
i’m one of Tony’s biggest fans. but his comments today really bother me. yes, this season has been fun. most of the times with him here have been fun. but after tonight, i’m beginning to think it’s time for Tony & the Cards to part ways.
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
Tony has whined
about not having an impact bat for several months to bat behind El Hombre. Freese made a big impact at AAA at might be able to hold the fort down for a wee. Neither Ryan nor Barden has done what he did at AAA. He would almost have to be better than Lopez at third. Yet when Ankiel is obviously hurting he keeps playing him. Something here is just wrong.

Freese may
be an offensive force…or maybe not…we don’t know. But he did kick but in Memphis and earn a shot. BTW, Rasmus could help too…just sayin’
esp if it's not that he doesn't want them
but that he’s unable to tell which are the best.
the ******* plane has crashed into the mountain.
freese wasn't even in big league camp in the spring
nor was craig. something I felt was absurd at the time, and relevant to the current discussion.

"All I am saying is give Freese a chance!" -- nmstar
"I don't see the need to stretch"
that is exactly why TLR frustrates me. Who is more likely to get a hit? I’d guess they {freese, barden, ryan} are about even. Lopez maybe a bit more likely.
Who has the potential to put the team on his back and carry them into the playoffs? Not Brendan Ryan, much as I love the kid. He’s a better SS than izturis and cheap, but Freese could hit 4 or 5 home runs in September. You have to make that call, mo; if it doesn’t work out, it doesn’t work out, but you gotta frigging try.
the ******* plane has crashed into the mountain.
Not only that
but with Wallace and Craig breathing down his neck, wouldn’t it be prudent to see if David Freese can hit Major League pitching?
by Hardcore Legend on Sep 10, 2008 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions
tony likes to keep his bench players fresh
we all know that.
the more bench players he has, though, the harder it is to keep them all fresh.
i’m in the add freese camp, because i’d like to see him play a game or two while glaus is out, but i also get tony’s reluctance to crowd the dugout.
It's really sad...
that the organization would purposely hinder a shot at the playoffs because it’s worried about a guy accumulating service time. Is that really the case? Or is it the pro-rated league minimum that would break the bank?
could understand it with rasmus
freese, no. craig, no, They are both too old for it to really matter, and are likely to be traded before arbitration is a concern. With those two it’s a matter of paying $50K to have them on the roster and potentially damping their trade value a bit- but if they perform, it could boost that value through the roof.
From a cost-benefit standpoint, I think it’s open-shut. The only reason NOT to bring one of them up is because the org has no confidence in them. Show some confidence in your kids, Mo!

Too bad about Glaus’ shoulder. Looks like it cost you a game in the standings tonight. Sorry to keep screwing you over with injuries like this. We’re not picking on you…really.

My words of the night
Betrayed
Braden Looper was betrayed tonight. Mostly by his defense in the 2nd inning but also by his offense which did absolutely nothing. Which brings me to…….
Mesmerized
Why were the Cardinal hitters mesmerized by Ted Lilly’s fastball? He really didn’t have another pitch, yet I saw late swings and confusion all night. They didn’t seem to struggle against Kerry Wood, yet Ted Lilly was mesmerizing. Which brings me to…….
Deserved
Even though I consider myself of an old school mentality and don’t get too worked up when a pitcher evens a score against a hitter with either some chin music or a fastball to the hip, tonight Ted Lilly deserved a Jason Motte 99 mph fastball somewhere fleshy. I have never seen a player beg more to be hit by a pitch. Ever. Finally……..
Lottery
Everyone in attendance of the game tonight should buy a lottery ticket. We just saw a bullpen of Randy Flores, Ron Villone, and Kelvin Jimenez not give up a hit.
