K-Rod
MLBRumors.com seems to think that the Card's are going to be one of the front-runners for this stud closer, and that the interest is mutual.
I'm not sure what to think. On one hand, having a stud like that closing games out is exactly what we need, and plays into the way TLR manages. On the other hand, the contract figures thrown out are 5/75M. That is alot of coin for a closer.
I'm no expert on what that would do to STL's payroll next year, as in, how much cash that would leave us, blah, blah, blah. Seems like it would tie up an awful lot of what we have to go after a SS.
That said, if we pretty much keep the offense intact and sign some kind of SS, resign Looper to be the 4th SP, add K-Rod to a pen of Perez, possibly Motte, Franklin, Thompson, Kinney, etc.....how much better of a team are we, and does that work financially?

Oh.....
And I’m sorry if this topic has been covered elsewhere, I missed it if it has been.

I don't think it has specifically covered so I think you are clear
While it is amazing to think that KRod will hold the single highest save total in a season, this was also statistically the worst season of his career.
You have to weight ‘results’ vs ‘recipe for success’. KRod has had a great results this year, however they have been somewhat contradictory to his other statistical categories.

I think that's a dude with a blog
Not knowing we have Perez.
While it wouldn’t suck to get K-Rod. I just don’t see any chance of us outbidding the Mets or the Angels for him.
I think the term is back up the truck. Because K-Rod will get sick money.

bogus rumor
I think MLBTR got that from a “Truth and Rumors” post from SI.com. If you have ever read those SI posts you will notice that they are often not even rumors but some bozo’s speculation aimed at stirring up traffic. Neither MLBTR or SI referenced any source. The only thing they mentioned was that the Cardinals’ bullpen has cost them a lot of games so they could go after KRod. But given the Cardinal’s spending habits/ability and that they have two potential closers on the roster right now in Perez and Motte, I don’t think there is any way the Cardinals even consider kicking the tires on that guy.

absolutely bogus
out of top needs, out of team habits for signings, out of payroll, out of playing style.
I give it about the same odds that Ozzie Guillen and Lou Pinella show up in the tabloids with a love child due.
Space.
It's a problem we face.
So we never go anywhere.
We just stay in one place.

Eh
I don’t like the price tag and years on a closer. Add in the fact he’s got the most violent delivery ever I don’t think he’s a good investment. He is very good though, and would make the BOB a better team. I just think that Perez could do an admirable, or at least competent, job, and the pen will hopefully get more rest next year due to more stamina from the starting rotation. We’ll see.

Bad investment
High priced relievers are usually a bad investment.
I’d rather see the club use that money to upgrade their rotation or find a permanent solution at SS.
The best way to fix the bullpen is to dump the dead weight (Izzy), and improve the starting rotation.

Witness
I live in Orange County and have been to MANY Angel games over the years and have watched Rodriguez over the course of his career….. with the emergence of Chris Perez and the potential that he has, signing Rodriguez would be one of the worst investments the Cardinals could possibly make. Yes, the bullpen has been awful this year but I don’t think that’s a reason to go out and commit to signing a guy who puts runners on all the time to a $14-$15 million per year deal…

Agreed
Surely after the Izzy flameout this year the team has learned something about giving big money to a “proven closer” for 4-5 years.

To be fair.....
His flameout was injury related, and both old and young guys can have injuries.

usually, the injured young guys are cheap, though.
I think this was covered in about 35,000 words in another fanpost.

How do you know.....
Who is going to get injured? I mean, if a guy has history, obviously.
If Pujols were to have some major injury tomorrow, and were to miss the better part of two seasons, would his contract have been a “bad contract”?
What is we resign Lohse to a 3-4 year deal, and in Spring Training he screws his elbow up. Is that a bad contract?

re: lohse...yes
any long term deal given to lohse is going to be a bad contract. he is going to earn far more money than he is worth and will probably end up regressing to career norms at some point over the next year or two. nooooo thank you on that.
