TLR

I have noticed he likes to play certain matchups he thinks hitters will hit well. That’s why guys like Lopez and Kennedy get playing time because they have ‘success’ against opposing pitchers. Whether these matchups are true or not is up for debate.

I'm playing MLB2k8 last night

Waino cruisng alon in WA and all the sudden his back goes out. So I bring in welley fro 2 innings of releif. and some shawn marshal who itraded kennedy for him and fontneot. Then the 9th comes im up 5-1. I had switched b4 yhis game to pro cause winning 24-5 wasnt cool. So i bring in a guy i traded loop for and he sucks it up..long story short.. i bring in Izzy up 5-4 2 guys on one out…he loads the baes. I eventually lose 6-5…yup my pen gave up 5 runs in the 9th..I can’t even escape the pen woes on XBOX..haha

Remember how he started the year cold? He eventually snapped out of it, and there was never an 0-29, but it seemed like he’d never get going. This reminds me of that.

Will this be the game our offense

finally figures out how to hit Zambrano? I think the key will be to take a few pitches and not try to swing at first pitches. Big Z can get wild at times and it is a must to make him work. If the Cards don’t make him work then it will be an easy win for him.

by KYCards on Aug 9, 2008 3:14 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly

As many times as we have faced him now you would think they would pick up on his weakness. If they make him work and get his pitch count up he will start to loose his cool and get a little wild after a few innings. There should be no hacking at the first pitch with him.

by KYCards on Aug 9, 2008 3:18 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Also if guys get on base or than Glaus

they need to run on him. Zambrano really starts to loose his cool when guys steal off him. And he looses his concentration and tends to get wild.

So game plan: Be patient at the plate and be agressive on the bases. Don’t let Zambrano control the game.

Ken Rosenthal is explaining the instant replay system

I love the idea of instant replay, but this proposal is just going to make everyone angrier: They’re routing every game through a central location (I think in NYC, but I don’t remember), and the crew chief can phone it into there. The crew chief gets first call and last call, and the umpire can veto the manager’s request for a replay for any reason, at his own discretion.

This is a really horrible system. It will just produce more angry yelling matches as egos collide.

They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...

by Valatan on Aug 9, 2008 3:38 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's how the NHL works it

It does OK. There are frequently terribly long delays as calling a goal with as many obstructions as there are in the way of the cameras in hockey is hard to do but with baseball the clear view should alleviate that. And if they actually hold to the “if you can’t see it clearly/quickly you can’t change it” that is actually the way to go.

31 ABs is not a decent sized sample.

Not even remotely close. What if he’d gone 8 for 31 against him instead of 9 for 31, would we still be saying .258 would be hitting well????

My only problem with it is that

Most of those AB are from when Lopez was with the Reds, so therefore, back when he was good, and when all of the AB would have either been in Wrigley or the GAB

They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...

by Valatan on Aug 9, 2008 4:15 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Which is why you don't use batter/pitcher matchups in the first place

You never actually get a sample size. It’s utterly ridiculous, terrible, stupid, [insert negative adjective] and dumb to say 9/31 makes him a better option than a better hitter. Again, what if ONE hit hadn’t blooped in and he was 8/31? He’d be on the bench for hitting .258 against him.

What about Albert vs. Odalis Perez?

and there are guys who are something like 2/31 against a pitcher. Perhaps that really is a sign to bench them.

They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...

by Valatan on Aug 9, 2008 4:16 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We can debate that one another time

Maybe I shouldn’t have used never---what is clear is that regarding a player in STEEP decline, 9/31 over the course of 5 years has next to nothing to do with what he’s going to do today.

by joker24 on Aug 9, 2008 4:17 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

the real problem is that most of those AB were from a time when he was a very good hitter.

They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...

by Valatan on Aug 9, 2008 4:18 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They looked at that in THE BOOK

and found that all single batter v. hitter stats were meaningless and would regress back to something resembling their true talent level.

by azruavatar on Aug 9, 2008 4:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's just so contrary to reason to me

certain batters SHOULD be able to see certain pitches well. A fastball hitter should be able to hit randy johnson better than the average joe, and a guy who likes low curveballs should have fared better against Darryl Kile. I can see how most of the time, it’s just random fluctuation stuff, but…

Maybe a better way to look at would be ‘batter vs. pitch type’ stats

They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...

by Valatan on Aug 9, 2008 4:48 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There are small GB or FB pitcher "platoon" splits

On that note, Lopez in his career has hit .253 .310 .359 vs. groundballers (88 tOPS+) and .239 .315 .393 (98 tOPS+) vs power pitchers.

"Regression to the mean is so much more fun to watch when it’s a Cub who is regressing." SleepyCA

by joker24 on Aug 9, 2008 4:52 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you can only go so far with splits and opposing stats.

Do I think it’s a good move to put lopez in the 5 hole and sit Mather? No I dont. I dont care that Z eats up righties. A guy who sucks against everyone except one guy is still a guy who sucks.

yeah

doesn’t have the TV sparkle and it seems like he knows it.

I just cant stand the way he talks.

It sounds way to rehearsed and not at all natural.

Gammons funbles half of what he says too

but I would listen to him talk about baseball all day long

Alert the presses

the Cardinals have made a good pitcher throw 34 pitches through 2 innings, as opposed to the usual 15 through 2

Maybe Pie.

But it seems like they dont like him anymore

Depends

On whether he’s injured between now and October. 50-50.

i'll expound...

... the Cubs are paying him a pro-rated portion of the league minimum this year. next year, they won’t be able to do that.

even the Cubs’ wallets aren’t bottomless.

Cuban will NOT own the Cubs

Trust me, MLB won’t let it happen and neither will the other owners.

If Cuban is actually offering 200 million more than anyone else they'll be his

Aside from the fact that money talks, you don’t piss off a motivated billionaire into lawsuits that threaten your anti-trust exemption.

In a reference to the Dark Knight

“Let me get this straight: Your bidder, one of the wealthiest, most powerful men in the world, is out-bidding all the other ‘richest men’ by 200 million dollars. He just threw away mounds of money in legal fees by taking his former coach to court almost exclusively so it would become public that said coach sleezeballed his way out of town. And your plan is to anger this person? Good luck. “

If Wellsie keeps on controlling the strike zone like this

I don’t mind the odd solo HR

This is the inning we need to get another run

and put some pressure on Z. If not there is a good chance he will get in a groove. Important inning here.

He's throwing strikes today

it’s hard when that happens, because sitting on him and watching pitches doesn’t really help you

So no matter how much I hate the Cubs

why is it that I still like Lou Pinella as a manager?

by CardsFan85 on Aug 9, 2008 4:40 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

because he's crazy

and crazy’s fun from a manager (but obnoxious from a player)
