so who will they put on waivers??

seriously, why is ryan franklin still on the team
let alone trusted in these types of situations. he had one fluky good season and gone back to his sucktacular ways. please, please, please stop giving him the dang ball!

I wouldn't have brought him in either
but he did manage one good inning
why he was left in for a second one is beyond explanation – it’s as if TLR is trying to just break these guys of their suck – and it is NOT WORKING

well because Franklin
has been so clutch lately when he goes more than one inning.
* sarcasm might be involved in this comment

at some point he has to be held responsible for repeated ignorance. I keep telling myself that he knows what he is doing, but he is killing me.

When the time comes for me to not be bothered by losing that is when I know it is time to retire my fandom
I mean for example in this situation why did you even leave him in there in the first place
but lets face it our offense sucked today

yep
someone needs to ask Glaus what the new excuse is – it was pretty warm today right?

regardless...
Franklin had already pitched a scoreless frame; once he had obviously no control over his fastball and had two men on base the choice to leave him out there was borderline retarded.
I had a feeling when balnco came in he would get the winning hit
I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2
i think it makes precious little difference
bases loaded, 0 outs. the game was over already

he's not very good?
i honestly don’t know. he should have caught it & turned a DP somewhere. how he didn’t is beyond me

the camera angle was terrible
so I couldnt see tif it was playable or not
I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2
i agree,
but i looked like it was hit right at him & he jumped for some reason & he just missed the ball
but unless we get a new angle on the play, we can’t be sure
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
Not sure why he is on the team
He cant hit for crap and his glove has been average at best IMO. I would rather see Ryan.
I disagree very strongly with you about his glove being mediocre
he is very smooth over at short and has done nicely at the plate lately. He is the least of our problems right now.
When the time comes for me to not be bothered by losing that is when I know it is time to retire my fandom
the LEAST of our problems?
his glove has been very good, but his overall play is a tremendous problem.
however he did have
a nice game today other than that play.
I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2
It would be good
if this were one of those series where we lose the first game and end up pulling out the series win in spite of it.
they need to win the next 2 to stay in it
or just play for the wild card i guess. Id put a lot of guys on waivers but whod bite?
I can't believe i gave up a homerun to that punch and judy hitter-major league 2
Losing a game like that

"I believe he’s been reincarnated, that he played before, in the twenties and thirties, and he’s back to prove something." - Former teammate Mark McGwire about Albert Pujols
DFA
Franklin and Izzy at least if minor leaguers were playing they would have an excuse for such bad late inning pitching!
if minor league players were doing this
you can be sure they’d be back in Memphis faster than you can say “another blow save”
This game to me
pretty much tells me this is not our year. We need to win games like this if we think of ourselves as a playoff contender. I know there will be some that will bite back at me and say there are still 2 more games to go in this series and hopefully we will win but if we had any ideas of playing in October games like this need to be won. Let’s hope the Brewers hit a skid this weekend against the Nationals.
We’re not out of it..but it’s hard to tell if we are really in it either.

Yawn
Really? This 1 game told you that? So it wasn’t the countless bullpen blown saves? or the fact that we’ve lost games like this countless times this year?
boo cubs, hooray beer
This is not helping the
“Wainwright as a starter” cause. Pretty frustrating. This counts as yet another blown save correct?

How many times can you outplay a team
and keep finding ways to lose? Yes, Isringhausen and Franklin have been brutal in the clutch this year but we also – like today – don’t hit well late in the game. Too many missed opportunities, both this game and this season.
not our bullpen's fault today guy's
Our offense sucked today
When the time comes for me to not be bothered by losing that is when I know it is time to retire my fandom
Yup...
I guess it’s Tony’s fault for not starting the big pick up, Lopez.
This is what I hate of the Cardinals of late. They don’t sell and they don’t buy. Lohse and Ludwick could have brought tons of prospects. Or they could have maybe tried to pick up Giles (who hits much better away from San Diego) to boost the offense and try to compete. But nope, they just stand pat and a 3rd place team is going to stay in third place.
wow Jimmy
did you really have to throw your bat at our dugout & look at Tony after you hit your HR?
was that really necessary?
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
Yes, yes it was...
Considering how the Cardinals treated him, and Tony’s comments about him, yes it was.
How did the Cardinals treat him?
By trading him after he asked to be traded to the West Coast?
by Hardcore Legend on Aug 8, 2008 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Good for him
TLR was an absolute poor sport in his comments about Edmonds earlier this year. TLR is a joke.
boo cubs, hooray beer
Perhaps the reason we lose so many "revenge games"
is how well Tony motivates the other team with his idiocy.
when asked about it in the post game
Tony shot down the question that Jimmy did anything wrong. even asking Ben Stover why he was trying to start something. all the Cards have said the same thing so far.
i have no problem with the pose, hop, etc. because Jimmy’s done that his whole career. but why look in the dugout & throw the bat at it? he & Tony have a good relationship, despite what goes on in the press, they really do like each other a lot & respect the hell out of each other. they are like an old married couple in a lot of ways. does Jimmy forget he is the one who asked out?
i dont know, but to me, a die hard Cards fan, it just comes off as twisting the knife when it’s already in our back. totally unnecessary.
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
As things are going I am starting to doubt
there will ever be a “Jim Edmonds day” at Busch in the future even after Tony is gone. Jimmy seems like the type that will forget all about his great years with the Cardinals and will stick his nose up at the franchise even after his playing days are over. I think there was a little something extra going on about how Jimmy left the Cards that isn’t being put out there right now. I think there is more to this “divorce” than we know about right now. At least that’s the feeling I get.
The starters sure are doing their job
perhaps with the exception of Lohse’s 4 ER last night
three straight starts of seven innings – they’re doing their best to keep the bullpen off of the field – they need some run support

I am seriously getting tired of all of Tony Larussa's bullshit
And yet there are so many things that he and Duncan provide that just cannot be replaced. HE has done a very poor job managing the bullpen this year. HE is to stubborn to try new things. He is too caught up in loyalty with some players and throws other players under the bus. He plays favorites and it is starting to piss more than just a few people off.
When the time comes for me to not be bothered by losing that is when I know it is time to retire my fandom
I agree with all that, andy
It’s a dilemma, at this point – lots of good, lots of bad.
by ccthemovieman on Aug 8, 2008 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions
exactly
no one can dispute his baseball IQ or his ability to manage players and get a lot out of them. But he is like a batter that does not make adjustments but goes after it the same ways over and over again ignoring the results and expecting something to magically happen. WELL Tony, our bullpen now has the most losses and most blown saves in all of baseball. Some of those yes can be chalked up to bad offense but our offense as a whole has been very very good this year!
When the time comes for me to not be bothered by losing that is when I know it is time to retire my fandom
While I agree that Tony is hard headed about the bullpen
I can’t blame him too much on Franklin today. Yeah he sucks but our offense didn’t come through today at all when we needed it. If we could have scored 1 run in the 8th or 9th Franklin wouldn’t have even been in the game. The home team has a huge advantage in extra inning games no matter if we had Franklin or Mariano Rivera out there. We couldn’t score anything after the 6th inning and that did us in.
when the O can only score 2 F'ing runs off a pitcher like Lilly Pad
it’s pretty hard to place this loss on the pen. how he is a successful pitcher in that park is beyond me.
I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
He's been a good pitcher for years.
Why is it that pitchers that get by with something other than a 98mph fastballl are always a surprise? Glavine made a long carrer out of leaving teams wondering how they lost.
agreed completely
I am still reacting to all the games that Tony has given up this year in order to appear loyal to his players. that is good and important to a point because it makes those players want to go out and succeed for you. However it has been insanity this year how many games we have given up. Tell me there were not other options to close out games. You do not need superman in there, just someone who can get outs
When the time comes for me to not be bothered by losing that is when I know it is time to retire my fandom
Blown saves cannot be chalked up to the offsense.
Because by definition we HAD THE LEAD. Sure I would like to score 20 every game but realistically that isn’t going to happen.
I very rarely rag on players for their failures. I usually blast Tony for putting poor players in places where their limited ability lead to poor results for the whole team.
Izzy, Franklin, Flores, and Pinero are what they are. Tony and dave cannot change that, all they can do is adjust and use them as best they can. Problem is they refuse.
Tomorrow's lineup
I’ll bet a fat roll (just small enough to fit through an intertube) of internet dollars that Felipe Lopez starts at short tomorrow on account of his .290/.405/.581 line against Zambrano. This season, Lopez has faced Big Z once going 2-4 with a walk.
I wouldn’t poop myself if Miles were at third either.
since we signed him
it’s about damned time he started at short. I hope we didn’t sign him to play LF.
In 37 plate appearances he's gotten on base 15 times
I’d definately play him over Izturis batting lefty.

He needs to use KMAC and Perez...
...let Franklin or Izzy setup. Again this is on the offense today, but Franklin is not right. Geez, I mean can anybody explain why he’s testing a knuckleball in a situation like that.
It took Izzy’s own apology on May 10th to get him out of the role, otherwise he’d likely have been used through the spring. Who knows, maybe Franklin will make a public declaration. Again, I think today’s loss was 100% on the offense, but TLR needs to cut the macho allegiance horseshit. He’ll probably balk against Motte coming up in September.
Its like the summer of 2006 all over again. And Wainwright is gonna likely go into the role, too.

Frank's Knuckler
he’s had the pitch for a long time, just rarely uses it.
It’s like el Duque’s eephus, he’ll pull it out every once in a while and see if it gets a batter to change his approach.
I had no idea this thread was here
why do you keep doing this with these overflows out of nowhere? AHHHHH.
Still would have used Garcia in the 11th once the runners were at 1st and 3rd.
I was thinking that as well
but at that point I think it was too little too late
When the time comes for me to not be bothered by losing that is when I know it is time to retire my fandom
I thought that was a solid move
Load the bases so you have a force at home and Yadi doesn’t need to make a perfect tag.
Yeah
but you are loading the bases for a guy who can’t get anyone out.
by Hardcore Legend on Aug 8, 2008 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions
In that game though
Frank crapped the bed, had to sleep in it. Loading the bases was the right play there, and it would’ve been a crappy assignment to call on, say, Springer to bail us out of a bases loaded, no out jam.
Would’ve been a hell of a momentum shifter if he managed it, though. He came in to a bases loaded, no out jam before this year and managed to get out with only one run scoring.
I agree with loading the bases after the situation had gotten out of hand...
I just dont agree with having Frank come back out for that inning. 1 of the other 2 guys should have pitched
Frank looked good in that first inning
it would’ve been nice if we could have pulled him after a successful outing and had Thompson pitch that inning and another one if necessary.
There were a lot of ways that game could’ve been won, it’s a shame that it was lost in a way that might make Franklin a less effective pitcher down the stretch, but I can’t blame Tony too much for sending him back out there.
By the way, assuming STL is not in Brian Giles no trade clause, why didn't we make an attempt to get him
has anybody asked that to Mo? that’s inexcusable

Even so...
With Ankiel healthy, they still only have 2 starting caliber outfielders (IMHO).
When Ankiel comes back, Skip could go where he belongs – the bench. A corner outfielder with no power hurts the offense.
Skip’s had 4 extra base hits since the end of June
we do not need another outfielder because we are already too crowded as it is

It looks like Giles doesn't want to leave San Diego
since it is looking more like he rejected a trade to the Red Sox… a really good playoff contender even.
Unless he is just wanting to stay in the NL I don’t think he would have come here even if we did claim him. Doesn’t sound like he is too interested in playing for a winning team.
When Jason Motte strikes out the side tonight
vs the New Orleans Zyphers…I’m throwing my remote at my computer screen.
Worrell
kicks the crap out of AAA batters, too. Motte is on a hellacious tear of late, though, It can’t hurt to see what he can do.
I just don't understand why other teams
can have young fireballers that can’t throw strikes but still survive, yet we have to pick up the scraps other teams throw out.

Because we bring them up and Dave tells them to stop blowing the ball by people

There's a big difference

erik, part of the reason Franklin won't be cut, demoted, etc
is because (if memory serves me correct) Mozeliak personally worked out the extension with Franklin’s family. This was one of the things I remember hearing as part of Mo’s resume.
Is there a reason Springer hasnt been used in almost a week?
He has one bad game and he is banished? I don’t get it. He tears up righties. Should have been in there pitching to Lee and Ramirez. Makes no sense….
Reds hire Bill Bavasi to be Walt's special assistant
Wow…after the job he did with the Mariners he can find work? I thought Walt was smarter than this. Just about everything Bavasi did in Seattle was a disaster. If I were a Reds fan I would really wince at this move. I really feel bad for the Reds…even though they are in our division I would like to see them have some success in the future. I hate to see a legendary club like the Reds make bad decisions like this.
im sure Bavasi is good at something
but GMing is not one of them!

Speaking of pitchers Cardinals management tried to ruin
Anthony Reyes is throwing a gem for the Indians vs Toronto tonight. The only run scored (so far) was off a fielding mishap of his own doing.
6 innings, 6 Hits, 1 run, 4 Ks
Looks like that's it for the night
not a bad line
Still early but it wouldn't suprise me if Reyes becomes a solid #2 pitcher
Getting away from Duncan & Larussa will save this kid’s career.
Awesome way to start, A. Rey!
actually left leading 3-1
6 1/3 innings, 7 hits, 1 run, 1 BB 4K’s. Oh, he hit Rolen with curveball to end an 8 pitch at bat.
He also pitched out of a bases loaded jam.
All the hits were singles.
He was deemed unworthy of a second chance by Mr. LaRussa and Mr. Duncan. I’m glad he’s getting that chance with a team that actually pulled him to make sure he wouldn’t take the loss. At least that’s my take on it—he was at 88 pitches and the hit he gave up to Rolen was described as a soft liner. Rafeal Perez stranded that runner…
I realize that one game does not make a turn around, but you have to take that first step. At least he did that tonight.
She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.
well....
it’s different to pull him in the 7th….versus the 4th or 5th, which is when he always seemed to implode for us. At that juncture, you just hope your sp can give you some more innings.
Rolen’s hit was a soft liner – boy, as much as glaus sucked today, I do not miss Rolen’s menacing suckitude

from Bernie,
When FSN Midwest’s Brent Stover and Mike Claiborne (KTRS) approached Edmonds after the game for a quickie on-field interview that’s a standard courtesy for rights holders, Edmonds blew them off and said.

I'm going to go try to find a puppy and kick it. - Brad Thompson AND THAT'S A WINNER!
Listened to the game on the road on my XM
All the way from just east of Atlanta to my parents’ home in Huntsville. Blanco seriously hit the game-winner as I was pulling into the driveway. Couple of questions for those who watched it.
Was the Cubs’ defense as great as Santo and the other guy made it out to be? It sounded like (aside from Edmonds’ throw) they played a near flawless game defensively, with several highlight-reel plays.
Did anyone else just KNOW the squeeze was coming with Iz2 on 3rd and Looper batting in a 1-1 count? That seems to be TLR’s go-to count when he wants to call the squeeze. What exactly happened on that play, anyways. A ball inside that Loop couldn’t get the bat on? Iz2 dead at the plate? Bummer.
Also, Albert’s gaffe on the bases with Samardzjia (sp?) pitching was frustrating to listen to. Cubs announcers said they thought he was trying to rattle the kid into a balk or a panicked throw. That doesn’t sound very Albert-like to me.
By all accounts I’ve read (and listening on the radio) it sounds like we played a great game and just didn’t capitalize enough. In other words, an early season game (remember when we were all complaining about how many LOB we had?). I thought leaving Franklin in was a defensible enough decision, since he mowed through Ward, Soriano, and Theriot. Too bad he shat the bed against 2-6. I hope we take the next two.
Thoughts?

Frustrating game all the way around
Well pitched game by Looper, with McClellan and Perez looking pretty sharp in relief. A timely hit would have chased Lilly and the game would have belonged to the good guys. Cubs defense was good, but highlight reel? I’m shocked…SHOCKED, I say….that Ron Santo would embellish the play of the Cubs. :)
Albert’s base-running gaffe was the “WTF?” moment for me and even more frustrating to watch…until Franklin came out for his second inning. I honestly don’t know what the hell he was thinking (Albert or Tony).
Yeah, it was a good game, but the type of game that they have let get away far too often this season. It was exciting, but those are games they have to start closing out if they’re going to play in October.
"Is this Heaven?"
"No, it;s Iowa."
"I could've sworn it was Heaven."
Ball was going to hit Looper's leg
on the squeeze and he moved out of the way. Soto caught it and tagged Izturis.
I can’t remember THAT many great plays. DeRosa made a nice barehand play and a nice dive, but that’s about it. They did have one play where literally 5 Cubs players couldn’t cut off a throw and it rolled all the way from 2B to the dugout.
Blanco’s hit should have been caught by Izturis.
We left the go ahead runner in scoring position something like 6 times today. Troy Glaus still can’t get a hit vs the Cubs.
by Hardcore Legend on Aug 9, 2008 1:14 AM EDT up reply actions
That Glaus strike out with 2 men on
to me was the ugliest “play” of the day. Glaus is really going to have to step it up.
I don't remember where I saw it, but that suicide squeeze failed because
Lilly and Soto sensed that was coming, so Lilly put the ball so far low and inside that Looper wouldn’t be able to get a bunt down and would just have to get out of the way. They guessed right…and I might have seen that on bleed cubbie blue.
She isn't crazy, she's just not impressed.
