Game 117 Open Thread: August 7 2008

Los Angeles Dodgers at St. Louis Cardinals, Aug 7, 2008 2:15 PM EDT

Kershaw Lohse
1-3, 4.02 13-3, 3.73

kershaw, you may recall, made his big-league debut against the cardinals in may and pitched pretty well, yielding two runs and 6 baserunners in 6 innings while striking out 7. he has had a very unlucky year. at double A this year he has made 11 starts with a 1.91 era, 0.95 whip, and 0 homers allowed in 61+ innings . . . . but just a 2-3 record. in 11 starts for the dodgers he hasn't been bad at all --- 4.02 era, and an opponent batting line of .278 / .366 / .390 --- but he only has 1 win, which came a couple of starts ago vs the nats. he's gone 6 shutout innings in each of his last 2 starts. kershaw combines high strikeout rates with high groundball rates, a la chris carpenter and brandon webb; if he's on, he will be a tough assignment for the st louis offense.

lohse in st. louis this year: 2.92 era and an opponent line of .225 / .270 / .357. lohse on the road: 5.16 era and an opponent line of .335 / .374 / .500.

Lineup....

Izturis, SS
Mather, CF
Albert, 1B
Lud, RF
Glaus, 3B
Lopez, LF
Larue, C
Lohse, P
Miles, 2B

Wow, those last 4 are sexy, aren’t they?

you know you wish you could grow a 'stache like Larue

or have GRIT like Miles
or Pitch like Lohse
or.. uh… don’t have anything for Lopez

FWIW....

I CAN grow (and have grown) a ‘stache like Larue….but only for very special occasions (e.g., a trip to the local dog track; a departmental chili party).

Miles’ GRIT is well out of my reach.

I actually don't mind the lineup tonight

I can’t rememer the last time LaRue started, but I want Molina for the Cubs.

I hate Lopez, but Skip’s defense doesn’t make up for his lack of offense against Lefties.

Iz2 is actually a legit threat against lefties.

We won’t score much, but this is the best lineup we can field.

Sadly, you’re right. Yuck.

The frustrating thing is that you KNOW you’re gonna get some “throwaway” lineups when TLR is your manager, so you roll with it. What is irritating is that this isn’t even necessarily a “throwaway” lineup…it’s the best thing we have.

Cesar sports a .286 avg hitting right-handed (which is a good bit better than his .199 from the other side), with a .350 OBP (and a .698 OPS fwiw).

Granted, if you’re gonna play Cesar, you want him hitting RH. I just hate our plethora of MMI.

lineup trivia question

What’s the largest number of switch hitters in a starting lineup?

I realize Izturis isn’t in it, but if he was, and Lopez was in LF, that would give us 3 today with Miles at 2B.

Has there ever been more than that?

by A1R3Z on Aug 7, 2008 2:57 PM EDT reply actions

and Iz2 is playing today, so that gives us 3 switch hitters… Tony must be in heaven.

1985 Cards

I do not know your answer but…

The ‘85 Cards had 5 regular switch hitters – Herr, Ozzie, Pendleton, Willie and Vince.

by andujar on Aug 7, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

And...

according to baseball-reference. Joaquin Andujar was a switch hitter… not that I bothered to know this.

That would make 6 since the regulars all started 150-ish games that year. They had to all start at the same time.

pretty soon....

someone will ask you if you’ve read “Three Nights in August,” then you’ll either say “yes” or “no.” Just to be clear, if you say haven’t read the book, just lie about it and say you did. Otherwise, you’ll get something like “You cannot even begin to understand how much Tony knows/thinks/eats/sleeps the game of baseball. Go read Three Nights in August.”

Tony’s done a solid job with this year’s team (picked to fight PIT for the worst record in the division), so I kid a little with this post, but I have seen that “logic” quite a few times.

some would argue

that they’ve won IN SPITE of Tony, not BECAUSE of Tony. I don’t know if I’d go that far, but the repeated bullpen decisions, 37* slap-hitting middle infielders on the roster, plus his earlier insistence on sitting Ludwick vs. righties so Duncan could get ABs (when Lud was on fire, mind you) was puzzling to say the least.

*this is probably an exaggeration of the actual number of middle infielders on the roster.

Waino moving to the bullpen

Single-handedly undoes all the credit Mo built up with signing Lohse and the Glaus trade.

Would that be Mo's call or TLR's call?

tony won't even let Perez become the closer

wants to keep him under the radar, and when you’ve got talent to waste like Wainwright, why even bother.

by TheBirds on Aug 7, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

To clarify

All tony was saying there was that he didn’t want people telling Perez that he’s the second coming of Bruce Sutter. I guarantee you that Tony would like for nothing more than Perez to nail down the ninth inning every time he gets the ball from here on out.

Haven’t you read “Three Nights in August?” (To complete a joke from earlier in the thread)

That'd be fine with me

So long as Perez gets his shot tomorrow.

Well maybe not Franklin.

i mean in a save situation

throw up any loser today, save the arms for the cubs, I want KMac pitching all 3 games.

Word up.

I’ll take three such calls this weekend.

I don't know who's it is

but Mo needs to step in if it’s Tony’s call.

I’m just tired of blaming mo for everything.

Is Kershaw making the Cards look as silly as the box score would indicate?

pitching to a fairly dead lineup

he threw like 3 pitches almost straight down the middle to larue, tapper out in front of the plate… now lohse is up…

by duncans_army on Aug 7, 2008 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

My theory

they just want them to feel as though they are doing well.

The Cardinals don’t like teams to lose disappointed.

This another pick from the nostalgia pile

I don’t why, but Tony only remembers players from their All-Star years. It doesn’t matter how many intervening years have gone by in which they’ve sucked. (also see Juan Gonzales, Adam Kennedy, Mike Myers).

not crazy about the move at all…it was worth a shot…give it a couple more games and shut this little experiment down.

Error 404

There something deep and philosophical about Error Message 404:

“The page you were looking for doesn’t exist.”

Is it a metaphor for religion, of happiness found in the possession of material things, or in worldly pursuits?

Or is the merely a deadend caused by missing punctuation, thereby emphasizing the cruel absurdity and essentially meaninglessness of existence?

All of which is to say, the link didn’t work, hardcore.
