| Kershaw | Lohse |
| 1-3, 4.02 | 13-3, 3.73 |
kershaw, you may recall, made his big-league debut against the cardinals in may and pitched pretty well, yielding two runs and 6 baserunners in 6 innings while striking out 7. he has had a very unlucky year. at double A this year he has made 11 starts with a 1.91 era, 0.95 whip, and 0 homers allowed in 61+ innings . . . . but just a 2-3 record. in 11 starts for the dodgers he hasn't been bad at all --- 4.02 era, and an opponent batting line of .278 / .366 / .390 --- but he only has 1 win, which came a couple of starts ago vs the nats. he's gone 6 shutout innings in each of his last 2 starts. kershaw combines high strikeout rates with high groundball rates, a la chris carpenter and brandon webb; if he's on, he will be a tough assignment for the st louis offense.
lohse in st. louis this year: 2.92 era and an opponent line of .225 / .270 / .357. lohse on the road: 5.16 era and an opponent line of .335 / .374 / .500.

Lud, RF
Glaus, 3B
Lopez, LF
Larue, C
Lohse, P
Miles, 2B
Wow, those last 4 are sexy, aren’t they?

I actually don't mind the lineup tonight
I can’t rememer the last time LaRue started, but I want Molina for the Cubs.
I hate Lopez, but Skip’s defense doesn’t make up for his lack of offense against Lefties.
Iz2 is actually a legit threat against lefties.
We won’t score much, but this is the best lineup we can field.
"We won’t score much, but this is the best lineup we can field."
Sadly, you’re right. Yuck.
The frustrating thing is that you KNOW you’re gonna get some “throwaway” lineups when TLR is your manager, so you roll with it. What is irritating is that this isn’t even necessarily a “throwaway” lineup…it’s the best thing we have.
there are a lot of teams that would pay a lot of money to have a throw-away lineup with Pujols and Lud back to back

I'd say having Yadi and Ankiel
in there would be the best we could have.
My fellow Americans. As a young boy, I dreamed of being a baseball, but tonight I say, we must move forward, not backward, upward not forward, and always twirling, twirling, twirling towards freedom.
Yadi actually needs a break this time, can't rest him the next 3 games.
Ankiel should have been dled.
I read that quickly, mistook the "L" for and "I"

not according to the splits from ESPN.com's gamecast link....
Cesar sports a .286 avg hitting right-handed (which is a good bit better than his .199 from the other side), with a .350 OBP (and a .698 OPS fwiw).
Granted, if you’re gonna play Cesar, you want him hitting RH. I just hate our plethora of MMI.

kent was running on contact
with two out so he was already halfway home by the time he got the ball
I don't think so. It was dying fast.
That said, Lopez was pretty far away from it when it fell. Skip would have been closer. He was probably comparable to Mather on that one.

Lesson to be learned.
Teach your kid to throw left!
only helps if they can throw 90

put a guy in front of Pujols to get him better pitches and increase his production. I’m not necessarily against it in this case, but we shouldn’t get in the habit of having whoever is slumping at the moment in the 2-hole.

So do you unintentionally-intentionally walk Manny everytime?
With a lefty on the mound, plus the string of 4-6 unproductive hitters we have out there today, I don’t think you can let Manny beat you.
Conspiracy theory alert!
Maybe Tony is pissed off we didnt do anything during the deadline so he is trying to make Moe angry?

I don’t mind it, though I wish it could be on a game that Piñeiro starts
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
Sure, maybe
Maybe it keeps the players sharp (hard to argue with his success over the years), but – and I emphasize today aside – isn’t a sweep better than 2 out of 3? I dunno…I’d just get a bit pissed if I was the starter going out there with the throwaway lineup as my run support.
So later we'll see Miles in relief?
With a dash of Kennedy coming in to play 2B? It would be pretty amazing to have 4 crappy MMI on the field at once…...
lineup trivia question
What’s the largest number of switch hitters in a starting lineup?
I realize Izturis isn’t in it, but if he was, and Lopez was in LF, that would give us 3 today with Miles at 2B.
Has there ever been more than that?
doh... looked at the wrong post...
and Iz2 is playing today, so that gives us 3 switch hitters… Tony must be in heaven.
1985 Cards
I do not know your answer but…
The ‘85 Cards had 5 regular switch hitters – Herr, Ozzie, Pendleton, Willie and Vince.

I know Lohse is pitching
But trying to get a sweep is like trying to get a save for this team. I would have put the odds of winning @ around 15%
There is no excuse whatsoever to give Manny anything to hit with men on base
especially with the rest of this Dodger lineup. DO NOT LET 1 PLAYER BEAT YOU! More than likely the rest of that lineup wont hurt you too much.
that's the part I don't get
why pitch to mr. m.r. when you have a light hitting lineup to mess around with?

The strategy seemed to work for LAD
except they extended it: Walk Pujols AND Ludwick, then take your chances with a slumping Glaus and the subsequent black hole.

ugh
hit and run just has so many negative outcomes
Espeically when you're trying to hit and run with a power hitting dude at the plate
I can understand it with the low K, high avg types like Miles, but with Mather…

Every game makes me think tony should be fired a little more
don’t try to defend him, I can’t be swayed. Just wait for the next time he makes a dumb call.
Whatever dude
He should be the manager of the year hand down…........

100% agreed...
but i think if he doesn’t win it, its because of the way he handled the closer’s role. Especially if Perez dominates from here on out and the cards fall short

no, not at all.

pretty soon....
someone will ask you if you’ve read “Three Nights in August,” then you’ll either say “yes” or “no.” Just to be clear, if you say haven’t read the book, just lie about it and say you did. Otherwise, you’ll get something like “You cannot even begin to understand how much Tony knows/thinks/eats/sleeps the game of baseball. Go read Three Nights in August.”
Tony’s done a solid job with this year’s team (picked to fight PIT for the worst record in the division), so I kid a little with this post, but I have seen that “logic” quite a few times.
Ludwick, Lohse, Welly, etc have saved the season
The players are the ones that are important, tony needs to just let them play.
Ludwick's playing every day and the other two are in the rotation
and will be in the proposed 4 man if it ever happens, which would be the first time in ten years that a manager has tried a four man.
They say that it's never too late, but you don't get any younger...
not saying he's keeping them from playing
but his managing style interferes with the games too much.
some would argue
that they’ve won IN SPITE of Tony, not BECAUSE of Tony. I don’t know if I’d go that far, but the repeated bullpen decisions, 37* slap-hitting middle infielders on the roster, plus his earlier insistence on sitting Ludwick vs. righties so Duncan could get ABs (when Lud was on fire, mind you) was puzzling to say the least.
*this is probably an exaggeration of the actual number of middle infielders on the roster.

Granted, we’ll have a week or two of analyzing his impact on the J-E-T-S, how he stacks up vs. the Pats D, etc., but now we can all sleep a little better knowing where Favre will be playing this season.

i’m a little puzzled as to why we were all fussing and fretting over something as insignificant as our bullpen when there was bretty favre news for most of the day. i’d like to see some priorities here, people!

What's Manny's beef with Pujols?
They just showed him giving a fake press conference type thing that I’m pretty sure was ripping on Pujols for the “line drive hitter that hits home runs” thing.
They're both from Santo Domingo, Domincan Republic, I guess
maybe they have some history together. He could have been just teasing Albert, too.

There was something in the paper
talking about how Manny was heckling him in the batting cages. Pujols said something like, “I don’t care if there are nine Mannies out there, it’s not going to affect my game.”
Wasn’t sure if Manny’s really trying to take el Hombre down a peg or two. Maybe they were being buddies because of Pujols GS last night.
Or maybe Manny’s just a goofy jackass. (Who can hit like a beast)

tony won't even let Perez become the closer
wants to keep him under the radar, and when you’ve got talent to waste like Wainwright, why even bother.
To clarify
All tony was saying there was that he didn’t want people telling Perez that he’s the second coming of Bruce Sutter. I guarantee you that Tony would like for nothing more than Perez to nail down the ninth inning every time he gets the ball from here on out.
Haven’t you read “Three Nights in August?” (To complete a joke from earlier in the thread)

My theory
they just want them to feel as though they are doing well.
The Cardinals don’t like teams to lose disappointed.

Error 404
There something deep and philosophical about Error Message 404:
“The page you were looking for doesn’t exist.”
Is it a metaphor for religion, of happiness found in the possession of material things, or in worldly pursuits?
Or is the merely a deadend caused by missing punctuation, thereby emphasizing the cruel absurdity and essentially meaninglessness of existence?
All of which is to say, the link didn’t work, hardcore.
So says, Titus Pullo (formerly The Dude)
