Game 116 Overflow 2
Probably getting to be about the late innings now, eh? This should be fascinating...
Or, Jo-El blew it and we're down by six. Either way.

Wainwright is officially the closer
By Perez pitching the 8th, that means Izzy/Franklin will be the closer tonight.
That means they are keeping the seat warm for Wainwright, who will be pitching Friday in Memphis.
I’d imagine that means Wainwright will come out of the bullpen in Memphis over the weekend and become the closer next week.

i figure
waino will start in memphis, i bet, just so he can get more pitches, see the strength of his arm and the effectiveness of his curveball.
then they can determine if he will be our cloer

We'll see
I see this as the Chris Perez audition. If he’s solid for his next few outings, he’ll probably get a look as the closer. Otherwise, Waino it is.
Should be interesting.

If Wainwright becomes the closer
it’s an indictment of LaRussa and Mozeliak. It is an indictment of LaRussa’s inability to allow Perez to be the closer and Mozeliak trying to coverup the fact he couldn’t acquire a reliever at the deadline by taking the teams best pitcher and making him only pitch 1 inning a night.

They accidentally burned through a pinch-hitter
Sweeney walked all the way to the box, then they decided to pull him back for Kent.
They ended up accidentally using both players. So Sweeney was wasted.
by mojowo11 on Aug 6, 2008 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sweeney came to PH
the pressbox announced him before he was officially in the game, Torre took him out and put in Kent, TLR argued that he had been announced, so the Dodgers lost Sweeney because the pressbox screwed up.

That's the rule
If a PH takes his place in the batter’s box, if a pitcher takes his place on the rubber, if a fielder reaches the position he’s entering in, or if a PR reaches the place of the runner he’s replacing, the sub is official even if not announced.

because TLR is smarter than Joe Torre
Torre sent up his batter too quick and wanted to change his mind.
It’s one of those “welcome to the NL” things. I remember when TLR got screwed by Bobby Cox his first year here for first signaling the pitching change before telling the ump of the double switch.

but that was Ronny Cedeno and one of the headiest plays by David Eckstein I’ve ever seen. Ump called him safe and when Eck told him the rule, he was like “Oh yeah…......OUT!”
Btw, I think Cedeno got called out on a similar play again this year. And then got demoted or something. Lou really doesn’t like Ronny.

it's a Win Expectancy per play graph
when your W.E. is 100% you win. Game starts @ 50-50 and eventually somebody gets to 100. Big swings in the graph are exactly what make for interesting/exciting/cardiac-inducing games.
I was joking about the graph of tonight’s game….if you just looked at the graph it would seem like the Cards were in cruise control when in fact we were anything but….

Gotta love Cubs fans!
Over on BCB they’re complaining about us being sore losers for suggesting they are stealing signs at Wrigley, then talk about how Ryan Ludwick should be tested for steroids. A few bad apples for sure, but there’s a lot more validity to the sign stealing theory than there is to Ludwick being a steroid user.
Blech. I await their impending collapse with great joy. I just hope to all the gods there are it comes at our expense.

Really, I like to read their reactions. At least 50% of my good friends are Cubs fans (hey, I’m from central Illinois, what am I supposed to do?) and it makes me happy that they’re happy, but it doesn’t mean I have to like the majority of Cubs fans. That, and I like to read what they say about the Cardinals, because it amuses me.

well now i understand your thinking better. my brother in law lives on the far north side
and he’s from ohio, went to school up there & never left. he’s a bandwagon fan if there ever was one. he knows nothing about baseball & only goes to that dump of a park to drink & look at hot chicks.
living in ohio i dont deal with die hard fans, they are all bandwagon jumpers because most MLB teams close by suck. talking to them is a waste of time. i’ve had better conservations with a brick wall. i’ve gone over to bcb before & the stuff i’ve read sounds just like the bile that comes out of the mouths of the morons i live around. so thats why i dont go there any more. nor do i care about what they say. when they pop up here nothing good comes of it. they do nothing but try & start fights. quite honestly it’s pretty sad, pathetic & boring on their part.
i feel bad for the genuine true fans of that team because they have gone through nothing but heart break & sadness. but you really gotta wonder if they dont like it like that. why else would they pull for a team who’s won nothing their entire lives?

being labeled as ‘not a homerun hitter anymore’ and that set him off.
by Hardcore Legend on Aug 7, 2008 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah that was Joe Strauss of the Dispatch
that set him off a couple weeks ago. and i think his article was about how Albert hadn’t hit a lot of HR’s this season & Albert dropped the “i’m a line drive hitter with power” line.
i dont know. maybe i’m nit picking here. i just remember him as this happy guy who was always smiling a few years ago & now it doesn’t seam like he’s that guy any more when he’s so confrontational with the press some times.

when he was clearly the most valuable player in the league by any non-neanderthalian measure, really screwed with him. After that it seems like he was like “f it, i’m not playing the game anymore”.

Thoughts from Busch III:
Perez bringing the Latin heat tonight was a joy to watch. The crowd left the stadium with an obvious hop in our step. Looks like we got ourselves a closer.
Pinata was terrible through three and lights out from four through seven. Maddeningly frustrating, he is.
Lopez’s swing looked like it belongs in maybe AA. Taking away just two ABs from Joey Bombs was two too many.
Albert is the mang, Ludwick is the manwick.
That Tanner 08 is no Josh 06. Get new bats faster, slacker!
Why in the hell are we booing manny? I just don’t get it. I asked a couple guys who actually were booing and they both just shrugged their shoulders.
As much as I was dreading the game, based on the lineup and who was on the hill, it was a great game to be at.
