I am OK with the Green Light there.

Pujols is going to score on a basehit. There are more ways to score from third, but Glaus has to be a green light hitter for us.

by Egyptian on Aug 6, 2008 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

glaus leads qualified batters on this team by a wide margin in swinging at the fewest balls outside the strike zone according to fangraphs. he also leads the team by a fair margin in pitches per plate appearance. he even has a slightly higher career BB% than pujols, the #2 in O-SWING and BB%. for what little it’s worth i personally trust his eye, and would trust him to swing at 3-0 counts whenever he wants.

yeah, but

raconteur leads qualified posters in angry, vitriolic comments directed at players for failing at what he believes to be simple athletic tasks. you can’t argue with that.

Sigh.

I don’t know what to do. I seriously don’t even know what to feel.

This is almost enough to make me want to stop watching the Cards play until my fellow VEB’ers tell me that the bullpen situation is at least partially rectified.

Trust me, it took all I have in me to not wish any physical harm to him or his family.

The way TLR has gotten on his knees to suck off Izzy over the years just adds to my hatred of the player.

I don’t need to hear about what type of a leader or a competitor a guy is. I just want results.

I can't speak for everyone

but my intention in saying something like this isn’t to be whiny. Its more like a cry for help. No one would be here if we didn’t love this team. But can’t we discuss it like adults? I’m not offended by the occasional F-bomb. But the negativity, tone and immaturity isn’t the exception anymore. It’s the norm.

I come here because I live 2,000 miles away from St. Louis, and I’m looking to connect w/ some fellow fans in a way that’s hard to do from so far away. Not to mention that the analysis is 2nd to none. We still love the site. Heck, erik & Val used to write regularly. Just asking that everyone keep a little perspective.

The thing is guys and this is obviously just my opinion

but I think that we have the guys we need within our own system to get the job done in the bullpen. The bigger problem is who Tony keeps on trying to rely on to close the games. It is not working so why are you trying the same thing over and over again. We keep on complaining about how bad our closers are but then just put the same guys out on the mound and when they fail again we say we got a big problem. It is insane how many times are we gonna have to blow games with izzy and franklin before we try something else. there are other guys in the bullpen and I am not suggesting that we use flores or villone here but how about Kyle McClellan and on occasion when the other team is especially strong with right handed batters why do we not throw Russ Springer out there. Their are other options in our bullpen that tony just does not explore and to me that is a sign of bad management and stubbornness

When the time comes for me to not be bothered by losing that is when I know it is time to retire my fandom

by ANDYAK47 on Aug 6, 2008 4:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know how you fix it.

The closer is the problem and we were not going to pay for a closer.

That said, a different lefty reliever perhaps doesn’t give up the AJ homerun.

how to fix the pen -hopefully

let McCellan close for now.
DL Izzy and Franklin with some made up malady.
Call up Motte and Perez and let them work the latter innings along with Russ Springer.
Use only Villone as a one out lefty.

This ain’t that hard. If it doesn’t work, then at least you tried something with kids who are hungry. Not languishing vets.

Make McClellan the closer (he’s good against lefties and righties both). Put Perez or Motte in McClellan’s current role.

Iz2.

Got to expect him to get most of the time at short with Miles at second.

by Egyptian on Aug 6, 2008 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he's not an upgrade over Izturis or Ryan

because he’ll let another 10% of balls hit to SS go through. If they want offense at SS just play Miles there. It’s literally the same thing.

by azruavatar on Aug 6, 2008 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if we're down, though

we can throw Lopez in to the game, and if we’re up, we can put Izturis there. This allows for late inning adjustments

by Valatan on Aug 6, 2008 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If they keep Miles on the bench, they can do the same thing

or they can move him over to SS and bring in kennedy. There’s absolutely no upgrade here that I can see.

Really?

Because Miles + Kennedy looks exactly the same as Miles + Lopez to me. Lopez was hitting just .234 /.302/.314 and really hasn’t been good since 2005.

Lopez has better splits vs. RHP, but so does Kennedy

And Lopez at SS provides only marginally more offense than Izturis and Ryan. This signing makes no sense. Miles is probably a better alternative than Lopez at both 2B and SS. Strange….

This must mean Ryan goes to AAA.

by CardsWin on Aug 6, 2008 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

.350 OBP, .776 SLG the last three years vs. LHP

Actually Lopez has been better vs. LHP than RHP the last three years, combined. Maybe the Cards plan to put him into a platoon with Miles/Kennedy at 2B.

because he’ll kick about half of the 10% as they go by. (I think he was last in the league in fielding pct. a few years ago, which doesn’t much help below average range numbers.)

As for his bat, I think he’s like Izturis in that he had one good year about four or five years ago.

I loved Vizcaino

He was a monster for us. He hit 348/375/609 and yes that is slg. I know it was only 23 AB but those 23 ab might have some how won us one game which helped get us in the playoffs which we won. So Vizcaino should be happy b/c he helped us win world series.

Your point was

that scoring runs has been the problem. My point was that scoring runs hasn’t been the problem. they’ve scored more runs than the rays, angels and brewers.

Your pont was we should’ve signed Bonds and not Lopez. My point was the cardinals have outfielders who can play, but not shortstops.

Not sure why you think I said lopez would help the bullpen, but whatever.

I said, that has nothing to do with this.

by Hardcore Legend on Aug 6, 2008 2:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

its two seperate arguments...

Runs aren’t the problem – Bullpen is

our shortstops suck so we signed a shortstop – Our outfielders don’t suck so we didn’t sign an outfielder.

Our bench has

Adam Kennedy, Brendan Ryan, Cesar Izturis, Nick Stavinoha, Joe Mather or Skip Schumaker (who can’t hit LHP) and Jason LaRue on it.

And we upgrade it by getting a slightly worse hitter than most of those guys.

It just seems odd that the Cardinals can sign a bad player who MIGHT be good for cheap but can’t sign an elite hitter who MIGHT suck for cheap.

Oh, August 5ths...

Thats 28 of them now.

A birthday with some rain delays, some blown saves, and a walk off winner. Cap it off with a catfish poboy and a bottle of red and I’m a happy camper.

God damn am I happy to see Carp back on the mound. He has easily the best “mound presence” for a guy since Pedro was unhittable ten years ago. Even after a year and a half break, you can tell in the first when Carpenter is “on.”

Him and Wainwright being in the same roation together is going to be really special.

As for that “bullpen” of ours… let Izzy go, DFA him, try to get a c level prospect if you can (as harsh as that sounds to the franchise saves leader, you have to at this point. He’s got a fucking fork sticking out of his back), bring Perez back up, bring Motte up, only allow Villone to pitch to lefties, and make McClellen the closer, and you’re fixed.

That easy, problem solved.

I can hear the interview now

Reporter: “John, at the deadline the Cardinals were neither buyers or sellers yet were still somewhat in contention in the National League Central. What do you say to fans who wonder why the non-activity?”

Mo: “What the heck do you mean? The Brewers went out and got C.C. Sabathia and Ray Durham. We went out and got Chris Carpenter and Felipe Lopez. What more do the fans want?”

Reporter: “Well, the bullpen is a mess, most importantly the closers role. What could have been done there?”

Mo: “Listen dunderhead, you ever heard of a guy called the Mad Hungarian? 97 career saves ring a bell? He believes, and I agree, that based purely on sentimental and anecdotal support we should put Adam Wainwright, our best starting pitcher, in the bullpen to be the closer. Sure, he would be immensely more valuable replacing Wellemeyer or Looper in the rotation, giving us 8 innings every 5 days. But the need is in the bullpen. How many other teams can say they picked up a World Series clinching closer in August?”

Would Skip be here? Would Ludwick be here? Would Mather have gotten a shot? Would they have selected Brian Barton? Would I be an alcoholic?

just a shame WJ didn't dump juan's salary

at the deadline in ‘07. Or ‘06, for that matter.

meant to add

if WJ had moved juan at he deadline, even for nothing (as many suggested), he wouldn’t have been hurt.

so they're addressing the bullpen situation

by adding Lopez so they can free up Miles to pitch?

I wish I was joking, but… I’m really not.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Cardinals' middle relief corps.

It's a good morning

Carp had 5 innings, 0 runs, and only 51 pitches. BOOyah.

I’m glad I’m not the only one that notices that.
