post waiver deal?
yes the non-waivers deadline is over but it doesnt mean trades are all done. Mo said that if a deal could be made he's willing to look at it but that doesnt neccissarily mean anythign at all but just in pure speculation what is out there for us?
a post on mlbtraderumors.com listed players that could slide throught waivers based on large contract, injuries, etc. One named listed is Michael Young of Texas.
I know that its way out there but he's signed throught '13 making 5 million this year and 16 mil the rest. ALong with them being 11.5 games outta the west behind LAA they are also 5 games out of the wild card behind teams like boston, ny, and white sox. teams that don't seem likely to fall apart ecspecially after their trades. SO...... what would it take to pry away young?
I could see jaime garcia, brian barden, and skip/barton
we can afford to give one of them up or even both with our large amount in the minors and with ankiel injured trading one of them could give rasmus the chance he's been waiting for
thats just one of my views
lay it on

your post may be a little better
if you describe why Michael Young would help the team… and how we could afford such a contract.

Well,
I can take care of the first part:
He’s one of the better hitting shortstops in baseball this season and has been consistent for about the past 5 years. He’s much much better than any middle infield option we have right now and would be a big boost in our line-up.
Now with that said, I don’t want us to go after him. Our focus right now should really be bullpen and only bullpen. I don’t think I really need to explain why.
On with the (good) youth movement!

Izzy and Edmonds coming off the books would cover that contract
And the help he offers is obvious—he’s an excellent hitter who plays shortstop. I’ve also heard that he’s an iron glove, and his numbers are Arlington-assisted, so I don’t know if he’s really all that good of an idea. But he would help the team in pretty tangible ways

Meaning, we certainly have the payroll room to cover him
We could probably move him over to 3B when Glaus comes off of the books. Still, it is a lot of money. I didn’t see that he’s signed all of the way through ‘13

I doubt we could afford him
$16 million per year? That’s the same that Albert is making right now and more than Carp. We’ve got plenty of albatross contracts coming off the books next year, so why waste all of that payroll freedom on one guy? A guy who will be turning 32 later this year and will be 36 when the deal is over. He’s a good player, but his OPS+ has been dipping for four years running now, and it’s at 101 right now. i.e. 1% above MLB average (I believe).
In summary: no thanks

While
age is yes a factor, and no I don’t believe that he would ever clear waivers, I think that this would be a decent trade
IF and I do mean if Texas ate some of the contract reasons for signing,
He gives you a .300 batting average for the top of the lineup, has decent speed with double digit steals every year furthermore he has turned in 90 plus RBIs consistently, he plays SS so let’s see Cesar’s 10 RBIs versus Young’s 90… need we say more?
If you don’t want him at SS throw him over to 2nd, seems like an impact bat to me but if Skip was part of the deal, I’m not quite sure who the leadoff hitter would be… I wouldn’t want to waste young in the 1 hole

Cesar Izturis bats 9th in our lineup...behind the pitcher
RBIs are a terrible stat to use
Obviously, I don’t think Iz2 is NEAR the offensive force Young is, but pointing to RBIs is not the way to do it. I’d focus more on the fact they both have 2 triples ;)

Young
is grossly overpaid, is 31 years old, and has a career .731 OPS away from The Ballpark at Arlington.
Now if Texas wants to eat 60-70% of his contract then it might be worth exploring, but otherwise makes no sense.

he's also probably
the worst defensive SS in the big leagues. He’s a $16 M second baseman playing SS.
by chuckb on Aug 5, 2008 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
defense
ummmmmm. actually career at 2nd his fld% .987 and at SS it’s .976 and iz2’s fld% at SS is .978 so if your happy with iz2 defense i dont see why you couldn’t take .002% difference ecspecially with young’s bat owning iz2’s. if you don’t give up schumaker then your line-up looks like
1) Schumaker
2) Young
3) Pujols
4) Ludwick
5) Glaus
6) Ankiel(mather now)
7) Yadi
8) P
9) 2B
plus iz2 OPS is not nearly close to youngs plus with pujols behind he will get a lot to hit adding more pop to the line up and the dumps of izzy and edmonds would give us enough salary with the additional 5 mil that front office said they would add if needed

I was so alarmed at the suggestion of Michael Young
that I decided to offer an alternative, although it probably won’t appeal to TLR and the “win now” crowd. Rather than burn prospects for either rentals or overvalued/overpaid players, why not find some near MLB ready SS who is blocked by a proven performer who isn’t going anywhere?
I did a quick and dirty search of current stats to identify relatively entrenched SSes and then did a quick troll through their minor league AA and AAA affiliates looking for potential prospects. I didn’t go any lower than AA as we want someone who could help relatively soon and there is no sense in blocking either Kozma or Vasquez.
The orgs I checked out (with current regular) were Arizona (Steven Drew), Atlanta (Yunel Escobar), Florida (Hanley Ramirez), Colorado (Troy Tulo), Philadelphia (Jimmy Rollins), the Mets (Jose Reyes), the Yankees (Jeter), Texas (Michael Young), and Tampa Bay (just ‘cause they have so freakin’ much talent).
I am going to throw out some names and slash lines just for discussion. I claim very little to no knowledge about any of them, but I would love to hear from anyone who claims expertise.
Arizona has Jesus Merchan who is currently sporting a .342/.379/.430 line in AAA
Florida’s Manuel Mayorson is producing a line of .307/.364/.408 with 20 steals in AA
The Phillies have Jason Donald with a .308/.388/.509 line in AA
Texas has two potential prospects with AAA Joaquin Arias at a relatively meager .283/.318/.391 plus 23 steals and not yet 20 year old Elvis Andrus with a line of .291/.345/.361at AA plus 44 steals
Tampa Bay has Ben Zobrist just abusing AAA to the tune of .353/.441/.541. He also hist .230/.288/.486 in 23 MLB ABs with 5 HRs.
So there you have it. Seems to me the price for many of these guys would be a lot less and the upside might be just as good. Maybe we could swap a righty reliever or two, or better yet Joel Pineiro or Braden Looper.
Ideally, we could land either a leadoff hitter or a guy for the 9 spot so Skip could move on.
For those of you who have been around for a while, never forget that Whitey Herzog swapped a journeyman pitcher for a young CF who was blocked in the Yankees system. Some kid named McGee.

If Zobrist's .441 AAA OBP translates to even a .380 MLB OBP, he's the leadoff guy
Skip becomes excessive, and we can unload him. I’ll take him in a heartbeat. Excellent research, giving you a gold star rec

Good research
I really like Zobrist, and was an advocate of trading for him last winter if we could land him for a couple of prospects. I’m not sure that he isn’t the SS of the future in Tampa though, since they currently have Jason Bartlett manning that spot and he’s obviously not as talented as Zobrist is.
Merchan would also be a guy to target, Arizona would probably be looking for a good bat that can play one of the corner outfield spots since they have Young and Upton to man the other two. I wonder if they would be interested in someone like Brian Anderson as well—it doesn’t look like they have a good catching prospect in their minor league system.
I’m not really interested in anyone below AAA however, since I’m still holding out hope the Pete Kozma is going to be at AA next year and might be ready for a big league debut sometime in late 2010 or early 2011. Not that having two good SS prospects isn’t something that would be a benefit, but I don’t think we need to trade for someone when we’ll have a replacement, hopefully, in less than a year.

Agreed
I would prefer someone a litlle closer. I am probably a little less willing to pin my hopes on Kozma, espcially that soon. I would rather have an additonal MI prospect than what seems like dozens of right-handed relievers.

I sense 7 innings of 3 hit ball for Carp tonight
and Albert breaking out of his slump in a big way. They always seem to play good when I am blacked out. I guess I shouldn’t complain too much, only 2 more blackouts after tonight.
